A Vintage Snare Drum That THUMPS
Everybody loves a Ludwig! And this snare drum is my favorite. Ludwig told me they might bring it back in the near future, and I'm patiently waiting...and waiting some more... 😂🥁

Ludwig made this 14x4" Downbeat snare in 1959, just after the name change from WFL Drums. It's approaching 70 years old, but it's got a timeless sound. You'll be surprised just how versatile it is still today!
Here are the drum's details:
- 14x4" Shell
- 8 cast lugs
- 1.6 mm Chrome Over Brass Hoops
- Mahogany, Poplar, Mahogany 3-Ply Shell
- Black Diamond Pearl Finish
I really love this drum because it's that same size and lug count as the Grestch Progressive Jazz snare and even some of the famous Black Beauty and Leedy snare drums of the 1920s and 1930s - the first big renaissance of drum set-oriented instrument manufacturing in the United States. The most recent renaissance of manufacturing in my home is represented by me making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and using a tortilla instead of bread because that's all I had. Oops!
I paired this snare with a 70's Ludwig Downbeat drum set that was overhauled by MKE Drum Co. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The kit includes a 20x14" bass drum, 12x8" tom, and a 14x14" floor tom.
I use all Turkish Cymbals in this video - 15" Millennium Hi Hats, 20" and 22" Meta Brilliant Crashes, and a 22" Millennium Ride.
All the music I played drums to comes from my drumless tracks, available at slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com .
First Track Used - slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com...
Second Track Used - slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com...
Audio was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling. Mics include:
- SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In)
- Beyer Dynamic Opus 65 (Kick Out)
- Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top)
- Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
- Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
- Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
- AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
- Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
- Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I enjoy long walks on the beach. And that cool mic cable? It comes from Sorry Cables in LA. - www.sorrycables.com

I've bought and sold a few personally too. And I've shed a tear over those too! hahaha You gotta remember--you're going to sound like you behind any drum. So, any 14x4 is a good 14x4. I love that little MKE Drum Co. one that I've got. And while it's a little different tonally than the snare in this video, it's still a killer power piccolo sound.

Hey Timbo! I think than this downbeat and the jazz combo small brother are really great sounding drums! Don’t really think them as a underrated, they r expensive and rare models. Another great model in this kind of strange inches it’s the brand new (discontinued) Supralite 15x5”. Hope u can try one! I paid 130$ for one in Reverb. Love to see this content, Timbo! See ya
@timbofromkeno
Жыл бұрын
Those Supralites are super underrated. I really want to find one of the 14x4 models one day. Those are also really hard to find. And I feel like people overlook the Downbeat 14x4/Jazz Combo 13x3 because they think about the Jazz Fest (if they're looking at wood snares). People even think about the Auditorium or School Fest or whatever else they called the 14x6.5" wood drums. But for whatever reason, under mics, I can get just as much (or more) body out of a good 14x4 as I would out of a 5" or 6.5"+ depth drum. Just something special about these!

I own two. Both 1966 and all original(one Black Diamond Pearl and one Champaign(Bermuda Sand) Sparkle. I also own a few 3 1/2"x 13" Ludalloy Piccolos(YES they are, IN FACT, 3 1/2" deep). These shallower drums voice "CRACKS" in a unique way. I'm quite surprised Ludwig is not remaking this iconic drum, complete with original offset #2225 lug.Somebody could make alotta 'dough' if they reproduced #2225 lugs(typically, IMPOSSIBLE to find). Photo's on the 'Blind Faith' album cover picture's Ginger Baker with one. On the topic of 'recreating' this drum's sound and feel, Used Ludwig 3ply w re-ring Tom Tom shells are readily available to cut down and reinstall the re-rings. I have done this and the opportunity to more precisely 'bearing edge & snare bed' produces a better than factory shell(I actually took the hardware off my BDP and installed it on a Maple/Poplar/Maple Re-Wrapped BOP shell I cut down(of course I keep the original shell. PRECISE and more predictable! I THINK offset lugs are essential(keep it to 8(OR 6! for 'FATTER' response). Trust Me, Ted Furlo

You'd be surprised how many people just haven't heard of the Downbeat! Most folks just see the Jazz Fest, think Ringo, and go for that. But there's something special about the 14x4. And the 13x3 is great too. And the little green sparkle kit is a rewrap--only way I could afford putting one together. haha
I'm not a drummer, but to me it sounded more..... Snappier, like a sharper CRACK sound. If that makes sense at all. It sounded good 🤘
@timbofromkeno

Very much snappier! It's funny how a drummer's ear changes over 5, 10, 20+ years of playing. We hear the most acute things in the tonality of drums, and sometimes we forget that when people listen to our music, they just hear a drum. Nothing more. hahaha I guess with drummers, it's similar to how some people get picky about wine, cars, home furnishings, or anything else.
