Agreed. The song itself is just... soulful. Wonderful work. Its one of those songs that is so put together its hard to believe that a live performance would add anything (other than the cool factor of seeing the artist doing their art live - maybe without the polish of a studio). But not this one. The Secret World tour recording takes this already awesome song and puts this spin on it that makes it in to something... new and special. It takes a soulful, almost intimate love song and transforms it in to a celebration of life and community. Without taking away from the original. Its like being able to experience a single event in history in two parallel universes. Love both recordings. Absolutely recommend experiencing both.

The live version is more than just a song, it's an artistic performance
Peter Gabriel actually said it is a love song but also a song to God. You should definitely see the live version with all the African singers and musicians. It gives me chills.

Song is actually a love letter he wrote to Rebecca de Mornay. She was asked about it several times and basically blew it off since the relationship fizzled… The man writes a amazing song about you and how he fell in love with you and you just go “Meh”.

Now that you’ve heard this tune, you simply MUST add Cameron Crowe’s directorial debut, SAY ANYTHING (1989), to your movie watchlist! This song has a pivotal role in that film’s storyline and is featured in an iconic scene in the movie. Plus it’s just a fantastic film with very well written characters.

The Secret World Live Tour version is a must. It amplifies every emotion Amber mentioned. The whole concert is amazing. Don't Give Up, Shaking the Tree, Come Talk to Me, and The Blood of Eden are also musts from this concert.

The Seccret World version pales compared to the 1986 live version. Nobody can replace Youssou N'Dour, African dancers. The Secret World tour attempted to recreate that - it was a very good performance but nothing close to 1986 version.

I believe the live version in Africa you're talking about was to celebrate Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday.
I have to give a shout out to *Youssou N'Dour* for his backing vocals, which are the main lyrics, sung in his native Wolof His voice brings a tribal feel for sure, but also feels uplifting and spiritual to me

I fell in love with this song watching the movie Say Anything. I love the line "without a noise, without my pride, I reach out from the inside". John Cusak holding the boom box has turned into an iconic image. But I will say, the live performance with African performers is just amazing.

As mentioned, the Live 'Secret Worlds' tour version of this song is on a whole other level. One of the few times I enjoy the live version to the studio one.

I think if it's your first time ever hearing a song, then go ahead and listen to the album version. That way when you do see the live version, you will have context and you will know how the artist changed or interpreted the song for live performance, and you will enjoy it that much more.

Just like when they done FFDP and Gone Away, now they should do The Offspring’s Gone Away. Which while at it I’ve been begging for them to react to Jonny Lang and Lie to me to from him. You must see the Secret World live version. It really brings out the African roots, with simply amazing dancing.
The "So" concert of 1986 still ranks as one of the best shows I have ever seen. Youssou N'Dour (the brilliant singer on "In Your Eyes") and his band were the opening act and later joined Peter for "In Your Eyes." The energy, dancing, and musicianship were incredible. They remained onstage for the next (and final) song, the very moving "Biko." By the end, there was not a dry eye in the house. Very excited to see him on his upcoming tour later this year.

Like everybody else on this board, I have to put a vote in for the Secret World live version with Paula Cole. In fact, listen to the album version (off camera) and then start recording when you start up that version. It's less intimate than the original and more of a celebration. One of the best live performances you'll hear!

You would love the live version of this song. "Secret World" is one of the best live albums ever. Every song on it is pure gold.
Tony Levin is the bassist on this track as well as many of Peter Gabriels songs. Watching him play and some of his techniques is really cool. As others have said you need to check some of the performances from Secret World Tour/Live, with Tony Levin on base and Paula Cole for backup vocals. San Jacinto, Digging in the Dirt, In Your Eyes, and Blood of Eden are some of my favorites.
I've got to jump on the Secret World Tour bandwagon. I've been hoping you would cover this song & that version in particular. Its pure joy.

This song *always* gives me chills, especially at the end when Youssou N'Dour's vocal come in. For me it touches on those desires to not just fit in but to find the place where I can shine and be my best "me".

One of Peter's best. The live version is unbeFRICKINlievable. Romantic, heartwarming, and hits you right in the feels. This song is iconic. There are amazing live versions that I think you would be insane not to react to, like the Secret World Live version , but the album version is an iconic song in music history. Not overly complex but mesmerizing and deep with meaning. And of course the movie Say Anything put it over the top in the 80's. Glad you listened.

This song is such a masterpiece. The lyrics, the combinations of the sources and styles of music, the bass riff, the lyrics, just everything, is so freaking good. and as others have said, the extended live version is insanely amazing.
One of the best songs ever, and Peter Gabriel put on the best live shows out of all the great bands I've ever seen. I saw him twice around 90-93 with Sinead O'Connor and Paula Cole joining him for songs. He organized a huge multi-cultural tour called WOMAD (World of Music, Art, and Dance) and headlined it for years. Peter Gabriel just had this professionalism in his shows that made it seem like he was there playing just for the crowd and putting the utmost of love and care into the delivery. Also I see you two put out a Phil Collins video at the same time as this. Interesting timing considering Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins were both Lead Singers for the band Genesis. I guess Phil just announced his resignation from Genesis because of health reasons. Wishing them and all the best of health now.

An anthem from the 80s, and as a high school age guy, this was something special between me & girlfriend. Peter’s vocals are tremendous & just hit you. I know numerous folks have suggested but I’ll add to it; y’all gotta watch the concert video! …& it would be special treat for us if you reacted to that too. It’s a whole new dimension & really gets you….it’s just a thing of beauty. It’s the best of the human heart in music. (It’s one of the rare occasions where the live performance is so much better!)

As others have mentioned, this song was used in a pivotal scene from the Cameron Crowe movie Say Anything. This is definately a movie you need to watch for your movie reaction channel. It is one of my favorite movies all time.
Perhaps his biggest hit, and one of my favorites. A few others to suggest: Red Rain, Steam (has sledgehammer vibes), Shock the Monkey, and Games without Frontiers. Pretty cool that you are doing both of Genesis' lead singers from their solo careers! Now that you have heard this song you should watch the movie "Say Anything" and you will understand why this song is so special to folks my age!

So much in this song...this is one of my favorite songs by just about anyone. Saw Peter live in Detroit when this LP was new. He did lay himself backward into the crowd, and they lifted him back to the stage. The ultimate trust drop.

Now that you've checked out two songs from the brilliant "SO" album, I highly recommend another from that same record. It's called "Big Time" and the video is along the same lines as the "Sledgehammer" video. In other words, it's an AWESOME and very creative video. In fact, Peter cleaned up at the 1987 VH1 Music Awards with both of the above mentioned videos. Oh, and Peter is very interested in world music and will sometimes work with or produce records from those whom reside in other countries. The backing voice you heard on this song is done by Youssou N'Dour, an African singer, whom also toured with Peter .... the two of them sang and danced to "In Your Eyes."

Love the song, love the rhythms, his voice was always unique...you always knew his voice. I think at some point he went for the African rhythms and vocals...kind of like what Paul Simon did.

The live version is even better. Gabriel is a genius and innovator. Many of the instruments he and his backing band (Tony Levin and David Rhodes) use are very obscure, like the Stick bass. He’s going on tour and coming to the USA this fall. Try listening to Solsbury Hill. His most popular song after In Your Eyes.
