This performance (ending song of the concert) of 'In Your Eyes' is taken from Peter Gabriel's 'Secret World Live' concert film and features the late, great Papa Wemba. Female voice belongs to amazing Paula Cole. This 1993 live show was filmed across two nights (16 & 17 November) at the Palasport Nuovo in Modena, Italy. The Secret World Live tour itself was in support of Peter’s sixth solo album, US. And guess what? Tomorrow night I'll attend Peter Gabriel's concert in Copenhagen, Denmark. Lucky me! 🙂

The female singer is Paula Cole who had two big hits in the 90s, "I Don't Want To Wait" (which became the Dawson's Creek theme) and "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone". She still performs and also is on the faculty at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour is the one singing in his home dialect near the end. And Papa Wemba and his band are featured. The hourglass-shaped instrument is called a talking drum. Several years after its release "In Your Eyes" became a hit again when it was featured in one of the most iconic film scenes of the 1990s in the movie Say Anything.

The Secret World Tour was a spiritual gathering. Tony Levin as bassist and Manu Katche as your rhytmn section is immense. Amazing! Paula Cole, Papa Wemba all poured their soul's into this performance. It features Youssou N'Dour singing a part at the end of the song translated into his native Wolof. Gabriel's lyrics were inspired by an African tradition of ambiguity in song between romantic love and love of God.

I have seen this concert, for the second time in this tour, the following day, in Southern France and it was as good as shown on this video (extracted from the "Secret World Live"). it was actually the very best concert of the many I have seen. There were 2 stages, one square and one round (masculinity and femininity). The scenography (by Robert Lepage and Peter Gabriel) was exceptional; a phone boot coming up from the ground, a treadmill on which Peter had loaded a giant suitcase containing the members of the band, a tree coming up from the ground and of course the dome,. The choreography is inspired by tribal dances of Western Africa. Papa Wemba and Molokai did the opening and came back for the first encore. PS. I had already seen a concert of Peter on the same tour 3-4 months earlier, in the Netherlands. The talented Joy Askew was on keyboards and backing vocals (so no Paula Cole and no Jean-Claude Naimro), and the supporting artist was Ayub Ogada.

This song typifies Peters ability to blend many international influences. That piano riff, that reminded you of Lionel Ritchie "All Night Long", is commonly found in Afro-Cuban music. So there's a cross-pollination of influence there, Africa and the Caribbean. I can't recall which language they change to, but it is an African language. I want to say that it's the same language the guy with the really "cutting" voice was signing in, or at least from the same region. In fact that chant they were doing was the inspirational catalyst for this song, as i loosely translates to the connection that people feel when they see the light in the eyes of someone else.

Gabriel is pretty eclectic, and I think it's great. He's always trying new things, exploring different types of music and sounds, and helps expose his fans to new things. He's got a unique quality to is voice, too. Funny talking about the facade. A lot of older folks reach a point where they don't bother with pretense any more. Sometimes it's funny, but I think that's part of what wisdom is - not wasting time pretending to be someone you're not. That Lionel Ritchie song you're thinking of is "All Night Long".

Hey Brit, I was lucky enough to have witnessed this masterpiece of a show in London, Wembley and you’re right more than just a show more like an event, my absolute favourite from this show was when he performed SECRET WORLD and at the end all the band disappeared into a suitcase. The lady with the amazing voice is an artist in her own right her name is Paula Cole and best remembered for the theme song to Dawsons Creak a popular show in the 90s. Paula only toured with Peter for this year the role now is done by his own daughter Melanie.

Peter Gabriel has long been a very inventive musician and performer, he was a founding member of Genesis in 1967 leaving after their album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway in 1975, moving Phil Collins from drums and backup vocals to lead vocals and drums. Genesis is another band well worth exploring. Peter has a plethora of live performances, nearly all being some of the best performances and music you will ever experience, the live videos for Growing Up Live, Secret World, the duet Peter Gabriel with Paula Cole HD Don't Give Up, Peter Gabriel - HD Signal to Noise from Growing Up Live (sottotitoli italiano)- a pure wall of music, and his exploration of classical/orchestral music such as his the video for his cover of the David Bowie song Heroes (Live in Verona 2010) about the Berlin Wall -a truly phenomenal track are just a few.

Britt, it's always an enjoyable experience to spend an enchanting few minutes sharing well loved music with you. Peter began his professional music path in 1965, this concert was part of his world tour in 1993/1994, All those decades later he is still producing new music and currently touring an, as yet unreleased, new album at the age of 73. Less energetic but no less charismatic, intelligent, searching, inclusive, inventive whilst remaining humble and often self-deprecating with dry humour. He has always known how to put on a spectacular show for the huge arenas, and mixed art, performance and music throughout his career.

Many people have failed to find it here in America because they don't know where to look. They are all listed under the name "Afrocelt Soundsystem". My favorite of the 3 is #3. With Manu Katche on Drums, Jean Claude Naimro (in the Tux & Shorts), Papa Wemba (RIP - in the red hat), Malakai, Shankar (double electric violin), Tony Levin & David Rhodes (guitars), Paula Cole with the amazing voice, and others. The line up changed throughout the tour. This song was usually an encore along with his song Biko - You should listen to that too - Papa Wemba was Congolese so that was most likely the language he was singing in. Such an uplifting song: Love, I get so lost sometimes Days pass and this emptiness fills my heart When I want to run away, I drive off in my car But whichever way I go I come back to the place you are All my instincts, they return The grand façade, so soon will burn Without a noise, without my pride I reach out from the inside In your eyes The light, the heat (in your eyes) I am complete (in your eyes) I see the doorway (in your eyes) To a thousand churches (in your eyes) The resolution (in your eyes) Of all the fruitless searches (in your eyes) Oh, I see the light and the heat (in your eyes) Oh, I wanna be that complete (in your eyes) I wanna touch the light, the heat I see in your eyes Love, I don't like to see so much pain So much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away I get so tired working so hard for our survival I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive And all my instincts they return And the grand façade, so soon will burn Without a noise, without my pride I reach out from the inside In your eyes (your eyes, your eyes) In your eyes In your eyes The light, the heat (in your eyes) I am complete (in your eyes) I see the doorway To a thousand churches (in your eyes) The resolution (in your eyes) Of all the fruitless searches Oh, I see the light and the heat (in your eyes) Oh, I wanna be that complete (in your eyes) I wanna touch the light, the heat I see in your eyes In your eyes In your eyes In your eyes Sa bet chi lamp, chi tangaay, sa bet maangi ci biir Sa bet chi lamp, chi tangaay, sa bet maangi ci biir Sa bet chi lamp, chi tangaay, sa bet maangi ci biir Sa bet chi lamp, chi tangaay, sa bet maangi ci biir Sa bet chi lamp, chi tangaay, sa bet maangi ci biir

The female vocalist is Paula Cole. She was fairly popular at the time of this concert. She faded from the limelight , not sure if she still makes music.

A very special song for me and my darling. This is a wonderful performance! Thanks for sharing your reaction and I'm glad you enjoyed it😂 She is on the other side of the country right now on business. But I think I will send the original version to her and hopefully bring a smile to her lovely face. There is nothing that compares to the way I feel in her eyes❤

The girl singing backup was Paula Cole. She got a start singing backup for Michael Jackson then with Peter Gabriel then went on to be a solo artist.

I love this performance so much! Back in the DAY day, my gf at the time put this song on a mix tape she made for me, (the studio version) and I thought it was the most amazing song ever, and that she felt that way about me? Swoon and a half.

From the same concert I highly recommend the song that you don't hear much about but is amazing in my opinion. Check out Shaking the Tree! It just has a vibe! It's actually about women taking charge against the male establishment, from what I have learned. Also very tribal and African influence. The performance is also very entertaining with him and the whole band.

As you said, Peter Gabriel is an experience. Every member of his band are legends in theusic industry and have successfully careers of theur own, then they come together snd combine all of that on stage. When I heard he was touring again after all of these years I instantlt bought tickets and am counting the Days until he is in Dallas on Oct 19.

Random fact - Paula Cole got married later to one of the musicians she met during this tour, Hassan Hakmoun from Morocco. You can hear them both in "This Gift", a single from his 2002 album.
