Fun fact: In the music for the hacking montage at 22:50, the lead guitar parts were played by David Gilmour (yes, Pink Floyd's David Gilmour). This thing went up a couple notches for me.

"This movie is 90's" is a funny critique - why yes, it was filmed in the 90s. And even in the 90's it was considered an 'out there' film - mostly because of the bold and speculative stylistic choices, and at that time the vast majority of society still thought computers and the internet were a mysterious and mostly useless piece of technology. I was 12 when this movie came out - so while 28 years of progress later it feels dated and easy to mock for not being 'serious' enough, rest assured that if you'd seen it in the 90's as the rare techy kid in the first generation with computers in school, it was the coolest thing you'd seen in your life. Also boobs.

Speaking of Matthew Lillard, he was in a very good movie called SLC Punk. It’s one of my favorites. That movie is so weird and takes such a serious turn, and I love every second of it

You know what’s funny, I’m watching this video while doing a coding assignment. I’ve literally just been spending hours writing notes about what every line does. And that’s just to make a basic login system. To actually do what they do in this movie would take literal weeks and thousands and thousands of lines of code. Followed by like another couple weeks of correcting errors

The guy they hired on as a consultant for the hacking stuff in the film realized they knew nothing about computers and just tried to see how much they would believe.

I have a soft spot for this movie. It's SO RIDICULOUS that if you go into it expecting it to not be good... or accurate and just... sit back and enjoy the crazy... then it's great! Also the sound track wasn't that bad.

This single-handedly inspired me to pursue computer science and IT as a career just so I could do his intro in real life. Already enrolled in college courses early so I’m almost there. Thanks noodle.

3D games were brand spankin new to the average consumer. So they looked (and not very hard) for most hip 3d-ass futuristic game they'd ever seen (probably the only 3d game they'd ever seen). I mean, it wasn't gonna be like Mario 64, Quake, or Mechwarrior, sooo alpha build of Wipeout it is!

I finally watched the full movie, and you didn't leave out anything of value, and you made it much more entertaining as well. And your commentary is very accurate.

Though on the other hand a lot of low budget movies and productions, those filmed with TV cameras instead of on film, were actually edited in digital pretty much from the moment digital editing existed, then converted back to analog to release on tape. It was a lot cheaper than mastering and editing in analog, especially doing all the special effects in digital CGI. And on a low budget production the director probably wouldn't be a snooty analog stickler who said that CGI was cheating and looked fake (he'd probably be right). Anyhow, if that was the case here then technically my joke still works at least during the editing phase XD

Just discovered this channel a couple days ago and im glad i did

My dad, who works as a programmer, showed this movie to me as a teenager because he thought it was the funniest thing he’d ever seen, I’m glad more of the world gets to experience this masterpiece lol

I visited my grandparents recently and we watched this movie together, they thought I would like it. They also took me to a local production of Shrek the musical, Jr. I love them for trying.

5:37 "you wouldn't steal a car" font, that ad came out nearly 10years after this movie. that ad was early 2000's and hackers released in 1995

I remember watching this movie in Computer Sciences class in middle school. The real issue is that we watched another movie that was actually really good but I can't remember the title. I also don't think that the person who was teaching Computer Sciences was an actual teacher.

The thing is, you usually make parodies of movies that are trying to be super serious. This movie has never been viewed like that really. A parody of it would just make the parody look more try hard than the movie itself.

@@Rockyzach88 Hmm, but imagine a parody which just isn't trying hard to parody, but also fixes the issues with the film? Make it a little more atmospheric, a little more character focused, a little more attractive to look at. But at that point is that even a parody? Or a spiritual sequal? Who knows.
