I’m Mexican-American, I paid my car insurance, gas, hygiene products, clothes, entertainment and paid my parents $180 a month. This was 10 years ago. I never looked at it as a punishment. I looked at it as contributing to the house. My mom always had home cooked meals after work and it was a blessing

100000% and I was honestly super surprised that you even had a thought like that. Your house standards or presentation hasn’t even crossed my mind. I’ve purely been motivated by your attitude, productivity and ideas on how to be productive as a SAHM with many littles, and your faith! I’m a Christian but not a Mennonite and have to admit I totally have been buying more dresses and less grunge wear because of your channel. You’re inspiring :)

When our kids graduated high school and they were working full time they paid a small amount of rent and we put that money in a savings account and gave it to them when they moved out or got married…but they did not know that so it was just a blessing!

I personally love that you guys live in an older home because it’s real for so many of us. Most KZreadrs have houses that I know mine doesn’t come close to, it’s late 60s and dated. What keeps me coming back is how relatable your lifestyle and parenting is. You are motivational without displaying an unattainable life.

Children paying rent at a certain age is not a mennonite or amish only thing. The rule for me was if you were not in school, you paid rent. There was no pressure to go to college, just the expectation to be doing something and being productive. So when I graduated high school, I paid rent, incredibly minimal. My parents didn’t need my money, they wanted me to understand real life. I also had to pay for my own car expenses, personal expenses and help out at home. But they were also quick to help out when appropriate when something came up with me or my sisters. It was more about life lessons than a hard fast rule. But I don’t think any of my friends did. I enjoyed this Q&A!

Remember to keep that sparkle between one another and put one another first. I always enjoy watching both of you together! I have been praying for a healthy pregnancy and baby. I enjoyed this a lot. Hearing Josh laugh heartily and seeing you two address marriage candidly is refreshing! I’ve been married 37 years and there is a great deal of wisdom in what you said about marriage and parenting. Those are the two hardest jobs we can have and it is an evolutionary process for both. It takes great humility to be a good parent and/or spouse. ❤

My mom had me pay rent once I graduated so I was 17. We are Christians. The lesson from my single mom was that learning to handle money (I also was paying for my own vehicle). Also to show I didn't need to rush out of the home and start my own life. If I couldn't handle the commitment of her small "rent" what would it be like when I move out for good.

My husband is Catholic Brazilian. It’s cultural that kids work and live at home during and post university until they either get married or move to a different city to work. I like the idea of having kids 20+ pay a nominal amount every month to help with household expenses. Some parents have their kids pay a nominal fee monthly and put it in a savings account for them to move out (pay a down payment, help with wedding, etc.)

How willing he is to step in and help out with the kids, is priceless. Also, Josh was right about people not watching your channel for your house, although I would trade homes with you in a heartbeat! I started watching you because I didn't know anything about Mennonites and was interested to learn. I love the way you focus on the important things in life like family, taking care of the home and just making the job of being a mom wonderful. Once again your home is beautiful! It truly saddens me to hear you say that your kitchen is “beat up.” I have children your age and I have taught my kids to appreciate what they have and be careful with their words. There may be people watching your channel that have much less than you and a home that is truly “beat up” and dream of having a kitchen as nice as yours. You wouldn’t want someone else to see what they have as less than… I never wanted my kids to hear me say anything negative about their home as if I was ashamed or unhappy. I was always thankful for what I had and when I could afford to make updates and changes then I did but never said anything about it being done because it looked awful, etc.. Our kids are listening to all we say. God has blessed you so much! I am praying for a smooth delivery of your baby!

Our daughter and son in law moved in with us when he developed a medical condition and they needed help. They lived with us for 4 years (they were 25 & 31 when they moved in). We asked that they pay the power bill which they did the whole time they lived with us. They've moved into their own home now, but I had no problem asking them to help out when they were here

I enjoyed helping my parents pay the bills. It made me feel important. I lived in the house they worked hard for. They spent so much into me growing up, and now was my chance to repay some of it . I feel it also taught me responsibility.

24:14 - My parents had us pay 10% of our pay in rent. I definitely felt like it was a valuable life lesson! Little did we know that they were saving it for us. They gave it all back to us when we moved out. 😁

Yes, when I switched from my business phone over to personal it took years and they finally just said to leave it a business phone and use it as a personal one. I'm thinking it could go back to multi - generations living together and everyone contributing to all the bills again. Housing is so much! We've been told here in Utah anyways that if you haven't bought a house yet then it can't be done. It can only happen if you have equity already.

My husband and I are both the oldest and we have been married for almost 25 years. We do have some 'passionate discussions' :D but generally we get on very well and complement one another nicely in terms of personality and style.

Just found your videos, love them! I’m your neighbor over in Red Lion, Pa. I was originally from New Freedom area raised on a farm in a pre Civil War farmhouse. Love it that you guys are so down to earth. My grandma was from Willow Street originally so I love Lancaster County her family came over from Switzerland in the 1600’s. Apparently my 9th great grandfather was Hans Herr, I want to visit the house that they preserved that was in his family.
