Unification means effect from both sides, not just one’s problem. How the unification process carries out depends on whether Taiwan side will officially call the shot of succession and many things. In fact, today Taiwan’s government is simply a puppet, they’ve handed their decision to the Americans. Such a pity.

If Taiwan want to gain the best for them, they should initiate the unification. The fastest they do, the more they get. It's just a ticking bomb until Mainland get bigger dominance in many aspects, mainly economics, that made Taiwan had less choice other than reunification. When the time come, they must accept whatever the Mainland offer since they will face a harder situation. Whoever rules mainland, almost hundred percent they will not change their stance for unification, also their political system will not change. Taiwan will be still Taiwan even after the unification, but LKY analyzed that if they keep the status quo, its more likely for Taiwan to lose some of their "valueble" aspects of their lifes.

Not as possible as you may think. China is quite a homogeneous country, with more than 90% of population being Han ethnic. Personally, i think the only region that can separate from China is Tibet (Xizang), because more than 80% of its population is Tibetan ethnic. But Tibetan have too small population compared to Han Chinese (3 million vs more than 1 billion) to be able to make a mess with China.

Time has changed. The British used to have things that the colonized didn't have. Now the 1.4B strong China have things that most other countries don't have, bar the US. But even so, economically China has surpassed the US in PPP since 2014 and will be twice the size of US by 2030.

@@mottscottison6943 USD seems to have a better value as a world currency as when the CCP tried to make the yuan the petroleum trading currency, they failed hard. It's almost as if no one trusts a currency manipulator's numbers -- including the CCP since they don't allow the RMB to convert to other currencies, lest competition show that it's worth is actually more on par with the Indian Rupee than the USD.

The British influence on China was mainly on industrial versus agricultural civilization. But as most countries have mastered modern technology, Britain no longer has this advantage. That is why Britain's is no longer known as the Sunset Empire, and British policy is moving toward self-isolation. Lee Kuan Yew's words clearly make sense in the current era when the world is viewed. Don't play little tricks of taking things out of context, you need to know that your intelligence can easily react in your words.

Why is a Singaporean politician commenting on the Two Chinas... this is really way outside of his scope of experience and expertise? It's like asking Sarah Palin to comment on whether or not the USSR should reform. It's an entirely pointless practice.
