A tour of BIZERTE, Tunisia - The northernmost city in Africa بنزرت تونس

Hi everyone! This is episode nine of my Tunisia series in which I visit Bizerte, the northernmost city not just in Tunisia but in continental Africa. It is located approximately 15 kilometres from the northernmost point in Africa, Cape Angela or Ras Angela as it is known in Arabic (the northernmost tip is known as Ras Ben Sakka).
The vlog stars off with me walking through the city centre through several local markets towards the port area of Bizerte. I immediately notice a lot of activity in the city with approximately 140,000 people, but noticeably lower noise levels than in places such as Tunis. This is indicative of the slower pace of life in this part of the world which is less touristy than other parts of Tunisia.
A local man then shows me directions to the port area and I walk past some graffiti and city art showing scenes of Bizerte as a coastal town and random colourful images. I then enter the port and is immediately struck by a giant boat or ship as well as the different colours of buildings which gives it an almost Venice-esque touch.
I then stroll around the harbour area and explore the walkway next to the fortified wall, after which I walk towards the other side and see several markets selling anything from household goods to cigarettes to - of course - shoes. I am struck by the amount of fruit and vegetables for sale and visit a large indoor fruit and vegetable market.
After visiting the markets, I walk back to the port area for one last time and then find my way to the louage station with the help of another local man.
Hope you enjoy this vlog about Africa's northernmost city! If you haven't done so already, please LIKE this video and hit the SUBSCRIBE button - it really helps this channel to grow and allows me to make more vlogs such as these.

Thanks for your raw depiction of the country. you are very nice and respectful of people , sir :) I wanted to point out the fruit sellers are actually offering you some fruits. It's not uncommon to be offered some food to visitors (even Tunisians get offered something when they visit another city or region) Only tourist related sellers or services will try to sell you their things (and sometimes hassles you) You did a great thing going to the real places where tunisians live and shops.

Thank you mon ami! I really appreciate these kind words and I'm grateful for your support for my channel. It's a shame I could not understand those fruit sellers otherwise I would definitely have tasted some fruit! I always try and keep my vlogs authentic and visit places the locals frequent. No fancy editing or over-the-top reviews, just "raw" material like you say!

Glad you enjoyed your walk around Bizerte. It's a cool coastal town, and the Phoenician ship is a random addition! I have been living and working here for the past three years researching the upcoming Bradt Travel Guide to Tunisia, which will be published in June 2023. One of the things I love about the country is the architecture, and Bizerte has some excellent examples, ranging from the Kasbak to some of the Art Deco French colonial buildings.

I miss Bizerta! I was also there a couple of summers ago, ate from that same restaurant where the guys don't speak english and had one mint tea at that blue and white café. The cool thing about Bizerta is their cheap food especially fish for obvious reasons, I walked into that big market got myself the freshest fish, took it to the restaurant, told him to cook it for me and added a soda and fries, was 20% of what you would pay for it in Tunis. There was even a better view if you'd kept walking next to the Medina wall, afterwards there's the new modern Marina, but the old port view is also great! looking forward to your next content!

Hi Mouath! Thank you for sharing your interesting story about your food experience in Bizerte. It is a lot cheaper than what you would pay in Tunis (and perhaps other parts of Tunisia too). I'm sure there are lot of things I missed in Bizerte on my short visit but the old port was just so lovely to explore, I could spend hours just drifting there! Glad you look forward to my content, thank you for supporting my channel :)

Thanks Sheila! Many have commented that I didn't get to the medina or the corniche, but to be honest this was the one place in Tunisia where I felt a little uneasy filming. Maybe it is because they don't get as many tourists as some of the other places I visited. Nonetheless, I definitely enjoyed my visit there and could easily have stayed another day to just relax. I also have to admit - I was slightly disappointed when I found out the huge ship was merely a restaurant; it would have been a lot cooler if it served a historic purpose :) Appreciate all your support, as always

A bit more difficult in the north of Tunisia where very few people speak English. But yes they are very nice my friend!

02:49 Yup, that's the epitome of that Tunisian hospitality. I miss Tunisia! Are you planning on visiting the south? (or if your trip in Tunisia is over, did you visit the south?) Btw, what do you film on? I love the quality of your videos! Keep it up.

Thank you so much for watching! I enjoyed your Tunisia series a lot. I didn't go to the South on this trip, but I definitely plan to return one day and do a Tunisia series 2. Maybe I'll let you know closer to the time if you wanted to join and collaborate? I use a GoPro Hero 9 and shoot on 5K 30FPS. The video editor I use do convert it down to 1080p but perhaps a "higher quality 1080p" due to the shooting settings? Safe travels

@@willieexplore Oh yeah, totally. I do the same. I think it's in 2.7k and I edit on a 1080 timeline. But that was with a GoPro hero 7. I literally just purchased the GoPro hero 11 because I'm leaving in a few months to Europe. Will be venturing back over to Tunisia for more adventures. Would be awesome to meet up, bro! In Tunisia or anywhere else. Keep in touch!

There's a big probability, if you would have tried to buy a pomegranate, the seller wouldn't have accepted the money from you and offered it to you (1 of the exemples from the top of my head). I can't shake the feeling that your rule is probably stopping you from discovering a lot about the tunisian people and their sense of welcoming. But I understand you don't want to buy stuff from everyone and get scammed. Cool video still!

Let's just say I ran into some language difficulties up north, not a lot of English was spoken. Hence I also engaged less with the locals in Bizerte. Thanks for watching the video mon ami!

The boat is a restaurant Called "Le Phénicien" or "The Phoenician" in english. Its the name of the people who came from Tyre Lebanon and created The empire of Carthage after. Also phoenicians were known for their strong fleets of ships at the time, they had the shape of that restaurant. Nice vlog keep it up bro !!
