👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️🚑 Happy Medical Monday 🚑👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ Quick note: Relativistic effects from the appearance of a 6th energy level, a 4f orbital, and significantly more massive nucleus contribute to why Lead is +2 vs +4. The explanation in video is supposed to be said simply. Describing an atomic model without using words "electrons," "protons," "neutrons," and "orbitals" and making it less than 2 minutes is why it is the way it is in video. I rewrote it several times over almost 2 months.

I had iron toxicity when I was 4. I ate an entire bottle of Flintstones vitamins. I had my stomach pumped in the hospital and doctors told my mom I would be learning disabled. I was in learning disabled classes all the way to high school, I had pretty bad reading comprehension, and other issues. I was told by my guidance counselor to forget about college and laughed at me when I applied. But somehow I scored very high on my SATs. And got into Umass Amherst. I struggled a bit as I had to play catch up of learning since such crappy classes in high school. I majored in computer science and minored in math. Fast forward to today, I work in big tech building AI software. I live in Manhattan and Im doing very well. Lesson is.. your brain DOES repair itself, it just takes a long time. Don’t let people bring you down.

I have an in law that worked for Dupont back in the 70s when they were making leaded gasoline. he said they had these open pits where either the lead was kept or mixed with the gasoline (I cant remember) and there were guys who basically tended those pits all day long. the lead pit guys, he said, were the happiest on site and would talk about their great dreams. they got more breaks than the other employees, but were provided no protection from the lead fumes wafting up at them all day. my in law was eventually forced into early retirement, and part of his severance prevented him from bringing legal action against Dupont for any health issues due to lead exposure. my in law is still alive today. the lead pit guys? none of them made it to 60.

Haha thats actually a pretty straight forward one to figure out exactly what kind of molecule it is if you know basic naming conventions. The hard ones are usually pharmaceuticals, where the name doesnt easily translate into structure. Like what even is chlordiazepoxide if you dont have any context?

Excellent video. I am a pediatrician and I really appreciate the excellence of this video. Lead is screened for in 12 mo olds and also many times in 24 mo olds. This video gives me new appreciation for the screening-it is so critical to detect levels before they get highway snd also to counsel pts on avoiding brightly colored painted toys unless they are certain the paint is lead free.

this one hit home for me , my parents told me that when I was 2 I chewed a bunch of lead paint chips that were peeling off of our old windows. I was taken to the doctor and had a blood test done to confirm that I had a very high level of lead in my blood. I was diagnosed with ADHD not even a year later. I was told that apparently lead paint has a sweet taste to it, and was likely the reason I was chewing it. Now i'm just here thinking that If scientists back in the early 1900s had done proper testing on lead before throwing lead into everything , my life and many other people that had been exposed to lead as well, would likely be much easier.
