Lol have yall ever looked at an air box before? Well the intake he sprayed into leads to a box where the bottom in fact has a hole in it. Yeah i dont recommend spraying in there but if you do it does drain.

You can remove the carbon build up in an engine by running a little amount of water though the intake. It's an old trick and I don't recommend a newbie do it, but it works.

Just because nothing breaks, doesn't mean what you're doing doesn't cause harm. There's absolutely nothing wrong with spending a few hours with a few brushes and a microfibre towel under the hood. A few squirts of APC and you can get your engine bay looking great. You really don't need to be hitting it with a high pressure washer unless you're a used car dealership and need to hide a few oil leaks.

@@PBaraik More like you have no clue what you are talking about. That ram draws air from the gap between the hood and the grill. The same exact thing happens when you're driving down the road at 60mph in the rain. I ran a detail shop for 10 years and have cleaned hundreds if not thousands of engines at this point. The engine is off and there is a water trap at the bottom of the intake pipe BEFORE it gets to the air box. The throttle body is closed so there is no airflow through the air box to allow the water mist to collect on the filter. All the water is going to do it is hit the back of the inlet pipe then run down the trap before draining out the hole in the bottom of it. Exactly how the engineers designed it...

What most people do not realize, is that the entire engine compartment is totally exposed to the elements. Everything that enters the grill of the front of the car is blown all over the engine compartment. At 70 MPH it’s like the engine compartment is basically being pressure washed with road dirt, rain, anything that the car gets driven through.

The problem with pressure washing an engine is that the problems caused don’t always show up immediately. As a mechanic who has had do sort out bizarre drivability concerns on recently purchased used autos I have found many connectors guild of water. Sometimes cleaning and drying the connections works, sometimes they need re-pinned due to corrosion, or worst case last week I had to put a new ECU in a 2016 caddilac that ran fine a month ago when it was purchased from a car dealer that fully cleaned under the hood. Coincidence? Probably not

Wow so many professional mechanics and detailers here...

Wd40 will damage the various plastic's most notable being the electrical connectors. Just use a spot free rinse system otherwise known as deionization which makes the water non-conductive. Water does not conduct electricity, the various minerals and metal ions make it conductive. If you remove that stuff the water becomes an insulator. Then all you have to do is use your air compressor to blow as much water out of the connectors as you can whatever residual water is left won't hurt anything but wd40 will break down the seals in the connectors that make them water resistant and make the connectors easy to break which is going to give lots of mechanics a bad day.

Are you saying the solvent components of WD40 will dry out the rubber found inside the connector? I only ask because in all my life working on cars I've never seen a single failure caused by WD40.

Ive even used it on my tires this whole time. Never had an issue. The only thing i know for a fact you want to keep wd40 away from is a paint job that your about to do.

When I was 18 I ran a car detailing shop that had contracts with every big dealership in the area. I had to detail everything including under the hood, I probably did 200 cars where I pressure washed the engine and never covered anything. I just avoided hitting the electrical areas directly and never had an issue.

I’m a tractor mechanic and constantly pressure wash these machines and have never had an issue.

Dont forget that even pressure washing from far away can still push water into places that shouldnt have any water ever, like electrical connectors that are very prone to corrosion with moisture and basic contamination. A gargen hose on the "shower" setting is the safest way to ensure you are not forcing water and contaminants into places it shouldnt be. Otherwise you can cause problems so far down the like they'll never know when the damage begun

@@clvmzyYou’re confusing volume and pressure. Pressure causes contamination in areas it shouldn’t be, as the seals are only rated for basic water presence, not forced water. Water volume rarely matters as long as it does not pool up in an area and cause rust.

@@SupeIex the pressure from a pressure washer won’t cause any issues as long as your not staying in one spot and you are at a reasonable distance from the engine. lots of water, such as from a garden hose can cause pooling issues damaging electrical components

​@@danielsvendsen3761those seals are engineered for occasional mists & extremely indirect exposure to water, like the trace elements of water from driving in rain that might happen to work their way under the hood. Not 1 set of engine electrical components anywhere are engineered for water to be deliberately and directly sprayed onto them. I understand thousands of people do this thousands of times, but the risk is always there, just like millions who smoke cigarettes who don't get cancer, yet human lungs are for inhaling air rather than smoke.

What i usually do is after i do my final rinse, i take the leaf blower and blow out all standing water

As a mechanic, I pressure wash engines all the time to clean oil off from oil leaks. As long as you don't spray water into the intake it won't hurt anything. All of the electrical connectors are waterproof and I have not had any issues pressure washing the entire engine bay including spraying electrical connectors directly.

A little extra tip: "Pressure wash your engine when it's hot, it's quicker to get all the oil, gas and or grease off. Jkjkjkjljk don't do this. 😂💀

Or you could just add dye to the system and clean off the oil with break clean, test drive and use an uv light to spot the sweeping. Try doing that to a boxer engine and you would be super surprised what all you can fuck up

I've been a bodyman for 30 years now and i wash every single car before i remove anything. Everything in the body shop performs better on clean cars. Never had issues with no start after engine wash. Just use caution

Working on a cleaned engine/undercarriage car is so nice, I work on my own cars, and prefer to not look like I came out of a coal mine god forbid I need to fix something on/under my car.

Just a tip, after washing all engine use compress air to remove water from electrical connectors.

I have used high pressure on my engine bay for 35 years the only issue I had was squealing belts Wich tells you to replace them there to stretched out for the adjuster to keep good tension

I pressure washed the navigator and water got in the spark plug well and created a short between the coil packs and the plugs. started having all kinds of timing issues. truck haven't run the same since. I ended up changing the coils, vct selinoid. which meant taking off the valve covers. welding on nuts to the valve cover bolt because some were stripped. broke thr dip stick tube. sent it to the dealership after putting what I could back together. $2000 later it still has a check engine light. all because I washed the engine.

Interesting how only 2 people (1 being me) liked this comment. I don't care how many thousands of times thousands of experts have used pressure washers safely in engine bays. What happened to you will ALWAYS be a potential risk. Modern engine bays are pretty sealed up, but not one of them is engineered to have water directly sprayed on them. Sorry you had to go through all of that.

I had a fail after doing this, water got into the sparkplug well one way or another. Blew out the water and let it dry in the sun for a bit, started right up after.

Same thing happened to me but distibutor went out

cover the brake and clutch master reservoir. The caps are not sealed, they are vented and water can get in them.

Pressure washer is fine just don't hit it from really close up. Then after you rinse it use the air compressor on it to get it all dry. Then run the engine for any additional water to evaporate away.

I've been pressure washing engines for 48 years never had an issue that wasn't already an issue usually bad spark plug boots or wires and I sprayed on my wires after pressure washing with 100% pure silicone

High pressure washer near electrical boots is very likely to force water down into electrical connections which several years down the road is likely to cause hard to diagnose electrical problems. Engines are designed to get wet, the panel boxes and boots are not designed to keep high pressure water out.

@@jessehickman668 ok lemme tell you because you obv have 0 knowledge. something isnt reading/getting voltage. you chase the fucking wire/harness and verify where you have voltage and dont you slow brain and hey a connector is a great place to start. oh and the panel boxes we here at FCA call it a TIPM, if it has no voltage replace.

That is a rare accurrance, and if it were to have a short or corrosion on the connection, it would be an EASY find/fix.

I ran a detail shop for 10 years and only had 2 engine cleanings kick my ass. First was a Mustang I forgot to take the bag off the CAI before starting it back up. The filter I had to replace cost more than the entire detail job. The second was a VW that refused to run for 5 days after it was detailed. We blew out and WD40'd every connector in the engine bay and it made zero difference. Finally after 5 days it started to stumble to life. Thankfully the customer was very patient and did not need the car.

Been pressure washing my vehicle engines for decades. Never a problem.

Depends on the car make at my work (honda dealer) We wash engine bays all day long w/ now issues. The one time I took my fiancés old Volkswagen Golf for a engine detail, her car would not start. I used compressed air to blow off all the excess water off the engine components and we were able to get her running, although misfiring I drove it home. the next day when it completely dried off it was running just fine. Even then I have seen a few new civic type R come in with a misfire code check engine light flashing, what happens is that when people wash their type r they spray too much water in/near the hood scoop it’ll land perfectly on cylinder four then cause the coil and spark plug to get fouled.

It’s perfectly fine to power wash just cover the alternator and battery with trash bags and ur chillin

If possible, it's even better to just take the battery totally out of the car, it allows you to clean the walls of the battery, as well as the battery tray, which tend to get neglected.

Happened to my VW. Had to wait an hour before it started and I was at the car wash. This was before cell phones so I just sat there

Are used to detail cars for 15 years. I never sprayed anything on the electrical connections before hand. I pre-rinsed everything with the pressure washer sprayed it all with degreaser sometimes acid and let it sit for a few minutes. Then pressure washed it clean. Some of the extremely dirty ones I had to do twice and use a brush the second time before spraying it. All you need is common sense and know what you’re doing and you’ll never have an issue

From reading the comments I’ve realised you can never win …..

The best thing to do is to get the nozzle about a 1/2 inch away from the gaskets, seals and paint.

As someone at a dealership whose job is detailing cars, we don't pressure wash the engines. There are contract workers there separate from us who pressure wash trade in car's engine's, but we do customer cars, and pressure washing the engine is too sketchy. I don't doubt that it's not too harmful, but I'd rather not pay for a screwed up engine component.

People are stuck living under a rock. On old cars the main thing to care for was the distributor as when it get wet it wont let the car run, but now most if not all cars come with Coils which makes that problem non existent an most if not connectors under engine bay are also weather sealed.

Distributor cap. Had it happen on my own Ranger.

I've always had an issue with water getting into the spark plugs

I've been pressure washing my engine bays for over 20 years too. I always keep the engine running, keep water away from the intake and alternator and don't get the wand too close to the engine. I have never had one problem

The only problem I've ever had is getting water in headlight controllers which is quite expensive to correct.

We cross alot of streams in our truck and water gets blown all over the engine bay from the fan , we've been doing this for years camping and fishing and the one issue we had was crossing flooded roads out in death valley , we got hoke to Arizona and our tensioner started making noise and when we pulled it off it had gotten water inside the bearing , out in death valley the sand and dirt had an unusually hi salt content and we noticed everything exposed metal was statting to rust so we changed tensioner and sprayed engine bay down with clean water no issues since and that was 2017

I never experienced much of a difference between brushing everything in sight and then rinsing the degreaser off vs just skipping the brushing and after letting the degreaser soak a minute just rinse it off

The tip I learned cleaning my 82’ Cutlass Supreme engine bay was don’t ever do it again. And COMMON SENSE kicked in, I never did. 🤦🏽‍♂️

I agree with you. I have been using a pressure washer on all my cars engine bay for the last 30+ years. The ones that you must avoid or keep them running are cars with distributors to avoid condensation building up inside the cap

A clean engine is a happy engine, and a damn sight easier to work on. Been cleaning my engines for over 50 years. Car wash, pressure washer, garden hose. Now, tell me how stupid I am.

Also start the engine and let it warm up before you pressure wash it so that the heat evaporates any water from anywhere quickly

In 40+ years as a tech and washing god knows how many engines I've never had a problem, distributor caps get wet inside but blow it dry with an air line blower and it's sorted, I've never covered an alternator and have cleaned oil out of them with direct blasting, never had a failure.

This is what I have always lived by. Wrap fuse box in a garbage bag. Wrap alternator in shopping bag. Spray 9 brush and rinse with hot pressure washer. Heavy duty applications I do not cover anything and just avoid spraying water into the air filter/s

When I bought a new car five years ago I made it a habit to use a garden hose and a regular mix of car wash to clean the engine bay a couple of times a year. The only prep I do is to start with a warm engine and remove the rubber cover over the top of the engine and wash it separately. I mop up excess rinse water with rags and leave the hood open until the engine is dry. Engine bay looks like new.

I had to pressure wash my 99 Ford ranger engine before replacement of the valve cover gaskets. There was a oil all down the sides of the engine. I had done a good deep clean on it but yes, cover-up alternator and your distributor wires.

Homeboys spraying water straight into the intake .

If you run the engine while cleaning it keeps coils and sensors from getting water in them.

You shouldn't put wd40 on electrical connectors

Had 3 Silverado’s with bad knock sensors due to pressure washing the engine bays (not done by me). GM put the sensors under the intake manifold where they’ll sit underwater due to the design.

I guess you guys are smarter than the engineers at the manufacturer. The reason people tell you not to use a pressure washer is because that's the manufacturers recommendation.

A lot of people are saying its fine to pressure wash but it really just luck that no problems are caused. Yes an engine can get water on it fine, but when you are spraying that water with high pressure, water has the potential to be forced into electrical connections and other areas water usually wouldnt get into. And the high pressure itself can damage wires. For example around coil packs and distributor plugs, this is from experience. Only spray the engine if you know what you are doing and are careful to avoid those areas.

Back when I was younger, I would pressure wash my carbureted engine which had a distributor and coil. Never once did I need to cover anything. And I used the car wash power washers not the 1000psi electric crap. Never had an issue

Honestly free flowing hose water works just fine for this, you're already brushing nearly every part of the engine bay, there's zero reason to take a pressure washer to it. Just prerinse, spray degreaser, brush, then rinse with hose pressure and it'll be spotless.

I detail cars also in the pnw. Cleaned about 2000 cars and I personally don’t detail under the hood to avoid issues with check engines lights or what have you. The wd-40 trick for electrical connectors however is clever, I’ll remember that one.

The only ones I don’t like to do are VW’s and Dodge’s. Both of them related to coil packs or spark plugs. But I’ve been spraying down my engines with a pressure washer for years and never had any troubles. At all.

i wash engine bay a lot just do not PSI electric components. however i washed a newer 2010 crown-vic police. check eng lite came on for about 1yr finely got cleared out

It's perfectly fine to pressure wash everything under the hood

Up close to the engine is fine, up close to sensors and connectors isn’t. There’s a lid on the fuse box for a reason. The ECU is sealed enough if underhood but again avoid the connectors.

Might not hurt the engine. But pressure washing can ruin the selinoids on a 5.7 Ford expedition. And yes fired thinks it's a good idea to put one on every plug.

I once did this and got water into the spark plug holes. The engine distributor got damaged as a result and car would no longer star 😢

Been pressure washing my engine and compartments since 1980. Never even a single issue. Stand back a little to avoid full pressure on electrical etc equipment. When driving highways speeds in a heavy rain storm, engine areas get wet and are designed to prevent that amount of water volume from affecting your vehicle.

I always spray my motor off at the carwash, and I've been doing it for years, never an issue. Keep the motor running...a little awesome spray, and a brush, then rinse.

Last time dude did that to my car it cost me 250€ because ECU died and took few other things with it

I only ever had one problem...elantra dohc..water in the plug holes...

Any car that is carbureted needs to extra carefulness . None of those electrical connections are waterproof. 😂

I hosed my truck engine at the car wash and the alternator started screaming got louder and louder, I was afraid it would lock up so replaced it, no more washing engines for me!

The ones I truly don’t recommend to do are the chevys or gmc with the LS engines the 5.3, 4.8,6.0 due to water running down engine block beneath the intake manifold and getting inside the holes where the knock sensors go.

Dawn Powerwash Dish Spray works great, but keep it away from seals and pulleys.

Was the manger over detail crews at nearly 25 dealerships at the same time, for 8 years. A pressure washer has never damaged an engine. Never damaged YOURS

A little water wont hurt anything you just have to be smart about it....Another Situation is you can take a mainboard out of a computer and wash it in the sink...just dry it fully and it works fine.

I can tell you for certian that if you detail any lexus or supra with a 2jz-ge you will 100 percent cause a misfire due to where the spark plugs and coil on plugs are located in a trough that collects any moisture and the spark plugs sit in the lowest point of the trough.

I can confirm never pressure wash an engine. I don't own a car but have a moped. It fell into a lake during a stunt to impress a girl, she wasn't there at the time, and the engine flooded !

No mention of the corrosion on electrical connections causing check engine codes that happens weeks after because of your water detail

I've always pressure washed my engines, and I've never had a problem.

I've seen it done on an Acura mdx it immediately triggered the check engine light.
