this really puts into perspective how old some empires are compared to others. I always thought of ghis as being so old but the starks of winterfell are even older and people like the summer islanders and the sarnori are even older

In terms of matching real history its similar to England, ie- the children of forest seem like the british celts, the first men are anglo-saxons - who also forged an alliance with them, the white-walkers are the Viking invasion of England, the andals are the northmen invasion, an the targaryens are like the romans after they founded London in 43 ad.

Book and show cannon are of course different. However, it's taken 8,000 years for them to build an army and (likely) wage another war. So, 4,000 years isn't really anything.

I kind of feel like they waited so long the second time around so that everyone forgot their weaknesses and that they even existed. I don't think it would actually take them that long to create an army of corpses. Considering how the show creators have implied that most of the corpses have been dead for less than a few years.
