I have some suggestions for new topics. The Saint Alessia Rebellion from The Elder Scrolls Universe. Lots of battles, duels and a couple of genocidal rampages that wiped out many a town in that war. For a Sci-Fi sources I highly recommend you use Starship Troopers (the book not the movie). Finally and I cannot stress this one enough for a Sci Fi source for many videos dozens, at least. The entire BOLO universe started by Keith Laumer. Not just describing the different versions of the self aware tanks, but the many battles they fight over centuries of fictional history.

Fact check: Rhaenyra was pregnant with her *sixth* child when she received the news of Aegon's usurpation. By this time she already had five sons: Jacaerys, Lucerys, Joffrey, Aegon, and Viserys; the child she miscarried was her daughter Visenya. Edit: Also, Queen Helaena was Queen Dowager Alicent's daughter, not her daughter-in-law.

Rhaenys and Viserys weren't brother and sister. They were cousins. Rhaenys was the first born child of King Jaeherys' third born son Aemon and Viserys was the first born of Jaeherys' 4th born son Baelon whom both were heir apparent before dying before Jaeherys. Rhaenys' line technically had the stronger claim being the first born of an elder son, but since she was female, the great counsel of 101 AC chose Viserys over Rhaenys and her son Leanor due to Viserys being the closest living male relative. They were the only 3 potential claimants to be seriously considered out of roughly a dozen potential heirs. That story is a very important precursor to the Dance of the Dragons.

"When King Aenys died, he was succeeded not by his son but by his younger brother Maegor. Prince Maegor Targaryen worked as his brother's Hand but he was exiled after one too many disagreements, mainly about dealing with the Faith. Maegor flew back while riding old Balerion and claimed the Iron Throne. He swiftly crushed the Faith Militant presence in Kings Landing then flew to Oldtown and forced the High Septon to disband and outlaw the Faith Militant. To encourage citizen participation, he also put bounties on the heads and scalps of any holy man carrying arms. Many died and many more went back to their septs. He also killed two of his nephews." "The brutality and debauchery of Maegor's six year reign was so well known that when his last surviving nephew Jaehaerys made his bid for the Iron Throne, Maegor was abandoned by most of his supporters. He was found dead, seated on the Iron Throne which he so zealously clung to. And history Maegor Targaryen is forever nicknamed The Cruel."

"Sentient Napalm Machines" definitely sounds like a band name. But what TYPE of band? Of course grindcore or thrash metal immediately come to mind, but it might be even better for a quirky, smart-alecky band of very white men with glasses, like a cross between Might Be Giants and the Barenaked Ladies. I also like the idea of it being an early 80s hardcore punk band, but if it was, they'd shorten it to "SNM" and play on bills with JFA, DI, and DOA. Actually come to think of it, it might be a good name for a very early 90s industrial band inspired by KMFDM and Front 242--but they'd have a more sexual vibe akin to Psychic TV and the Thrill Kill Kult. They would often shorten their name to "S n M" (get it?!?) and have album art of, like, women in black leather spanking men in bondage gear. And they'd have at least one song with their own name in the lyrics, something like "Sentient Napalm Machines/Running the American Dream..."

@@joetheperformer Well, they are making tv show apparently about Aegon's conquest. Incest was a Valyrian tradition. Makes sense since the magic that allows them to have monopoly over dragons was in the blood of 40 High Noble dragonlord families of Valyria. The Targaryens being the last remaining one, they had to interbreed to keep it pure so they could still keep riding dragons. It was like that back in Valyria (so the genes do not expand out of the 40 families) and much more hardcored now when they are the only ones left. Over time, they seemed to have kept the tradition when the dragons went extinct... but you still saw more "fresh blood" coming into their lineage. When Aegon's conquest takes place Valyrian traditions were more alive (like poligamy and incest). Incest has been practices a lot in history and this is based in history. Most of us have incest in our lineage since most have relatives from towns and small towns were most tend to be related over the centuries.

So in terms of military units, the Dragons are not as all powerful as I once thought. In terms of dragons against armies, the dragons need to be supported from the ground by infantry, as while devastating they are vulnerable to ranged weaponry (crossbows and Scorpions notably). Myraxes shows this, as even during the Conquering a single dragon is defeatable. You can get away with just dragons though, if you have a decisive number of them. The Battle of the Gullet shows this, as well as the dragons weakness to ranged attack. Dragon on Dragon combat however I would not advise, in any scenario really. The only example I can see of a straight victory is the battle between Aemond and Lucerys, and that only ended cleanly because Aemond outweighed Lucerys threefold (according to the book) and had years more experience riding. Every other example of combat between dragons ended in mutual defeat. Aemond himself would meet his end in what could be argued as the most even fight between dragons of the war, between himself and Daemon, but in the end the dragons were destroyed weakening both sides (as well as denying them able commanders). Aegon II too, would shatter both his legs in his fight to retake Dragonstone, and while he and Sunfyre can claim victory, again both rider and dragon were incapacitated as a result. So how should dragons be used? Several ways, I think: First, reconnaissance. Excellent flight range, fast as hell and if you choose not to engage the enemy can’t really touch you. Prince Daeron shows this, as the young man proved vital to the Hightower advance from the reach doing exactly this. Second, fire support. Dragons should not be deployed dirslectly to the frontline, anywhere. They are too valuable, costly, and are often ridden by people of supreme importance to the army overall. As such, they should be kept at maximum range most of the time, and deployed at pivotal points of the engagement. To create breaches in a wall, to curtail a cavalry charge. To break a stubborn shield wall. While a Field of Fire style decimation sounds good, the risk in my estimation is too high. Last, that I can think of anyway, deterrence. Frankly, the threat of dragons is more beneficial than actually using them. Since Harrenhall, every lord in the land knows what could happen if you piss off a dragonrider. Using them as a threat can bring rebellions to premature ends before they begin. King Jaraharys I (Spelling, I know…) famously flew to Oldtown with his dragon just to make a point, he also forgave his step-uncle Lord Baratheon very magnanimously, while they were both standing in front of his dragon eating. The Lord got the message. Dragons do not win fights by themselves, and losing one is equivalent to losing a battle by itself. But used properly, you can conquer a continent with them! [Thank you for reading, those who did! Also good job GRRM, for creating such a believable universe to discuss, and the lads at Wizards, for this ace video!]

Yup, only the show made them look like some unbeatable force and then easily to kill.... They are great but they can't help you control the land and you can kill them in battle and the rider has no protection. So it took Valyria like a thousand years to conquer the Giscari cities... What happened in Westeros was unusual but because the people didn't know how to fight the dragons.

It’s actually quite possible that the Targaryens fled from Valyria due to some political mishap at court and chose exile on dragonstone rather than death. The whole thing about Danys the dreamer foretelling the destruction of Valyria is likely a myth conjured up afterwards.

The Targaryens do have 'Dragon Dreams' the gift of prophecy as seen amongst many Targaryens (Daeron the Drunkard) and Blackfyres (Daemon II Blackfyre) whose visions do come true just not in the way they have interpreted. However I do think that idea that its a myth is an interesting one in this case.

Quite symbolic that the first battle of the Dance was an aerial duel between two dragons ridden by Targaryen princes, and the final battle of the Dance was a conventional battle between armies of men without a single Targaryen present on either side, just bannermen fighting in their name. A perfect symbolization of how the age of dragons had come to an end and where the true power now lay in Westeros.
