The circle cutouts is for quality control :) You cut out a circle for weight purposes and can use that circle for things like peeling-tests and other kind of tests.

they're also mostly cut by machine at the manufacturing level and the table that the fabric goes on is much much bigger than the yardage coming off the roll so it depends on how thrifty the operator is feeling and how much work they want to do. it ultimately benefits the workers to have these machines and to be less precise because it's less physical stress on the operators' bodies!

Also you said most of the ones cut out of the middle were lace fabrics and that could have been done to get an accurate representation of the pattern. All the ones with the samples cut out near the edge were all solid unpatterned fabrics.

@@estylefree I agree - it could be for an accurate representation of the pattern, or to make sure that the stretch/dye/whatever is doing what they want it to in the center of the roll. Or, as Emily said above, it may be to save the machine operator the strain of precisely positioning the table! (If you think the main piece of fabric is going to be tossed afterwards, you'd hardly have any incentive to save yardage. Yay for them donating now!)

I am in the manufacturing industry. This looks like a quality sample to me and it’s better that it comes from the middle of the fabric. They do strain testing and such on those. And…The fact it says shipping sample means they may have shipped the fabric to see how it behaved and see if any bacteria/mold grew on the fabric (it can be shipped in containers that vary in temperature and humidity) so the consumer is protected from any of those yuckies being against their skin.

I don’t know how much into Edwardian historical fashion you are, but all I can think about when I see all that cream and black lace is how Bernadette Banner made an Edwardian styled lace blouse. I think doing your own spin on it would be stunning! Especially with the dandelion puff pattern! Also the yellow fabric as a pair of summer shorts or combined with lace into a summer dress/romper is immediately where my mind went. Whatever you make I can’t wait to see it! And I adore that pattern you’re using for all those dresses! It looks so comfy and beautiful ❤

YES! This is the BEST idea! I was thinking of underskirts (Petticoats) but that is a much better idea!

The circle is for weighing GSM, grams per square meter or oz per yard. It's a check to see if the weight of the fabric is right for the thing you're making. Consequently it's necessary to check because if you create a viral hoodie and order 24oz material and they send you 20oz instead and you didn't check, then you are over paying for a product you didn't get and they are skimming off the top. And it happens a lot.

96% T would probably be Tencel (Lyocell) Sp spandex

It may be that the shipping samples are for a clothing creator/brand buying samples of a company's fabrics in colors they would be interested in using for their pieces, and the circles are cut to test the weight of the fabric - to make certain that they are the right weight for the finished product. And they probably take sample cuts from the center to verify that the non-selvedge material is a compatible weight. Also, holy cow that's a lot of fabric. My introverted self has never wished so hard I lived somewhere more populated, so I could find a fabric thrift store.

I live within 4 miles and never knew it was here!! This video may have ruined my life.

What springs to my mind for the lace would be a top where the bodice has a lace "overlay" and the sleeves are just lace. Or a skirt with a lace overlay. Or a dress with lace inserts e.g. down the front or across the bottom of the skirt... so many possibilities! 😀

I came here to say a lace dress overlay, too! I see it as just a slightly larger dress to go over maybe black one, but I'm not great at sewing, & like the simplest solution 😅

The "boring" colours of lace could be really interesting for dying. They're almost definitely synthetic, which means they may not take dye at all... but... if they do take dye, most contemporary lace tends to dye unevenly due to there being different textile compositions making up - in a way that can pick out the pattern of how the lace is made. If it works out visually stunning, I suggest an over skirt. If it's less appealing, there's always petticoats for swoosh factor, and air trapping warmth layers.

I've accumulated 116 different items of fabric of various lengths in 7 months. Before that I had none It got me thinking: even if there's 1 outfit per fabric, I can make 116 outfits. Which is insane, because I've never had that much clothes in my entire life, not to mention that I don't have enough space to put all that clothes into. And for many fabrics that I own, I can make way more the 1 outfit I love buying fabric, my kick is that I do learn more about fabric types and different kind of fabric blends there're with each buy. I have quite a collection of natural blends. But I do have to stop for a while, because I'm not sure that I'm even able to use up all the fabric I've already got. And in several years my tastes can easily change too So my goal for this year: no buy, more sew

You could make a patchwork quilt out of any fabrics you don't think you'll make clothes out of! That's what I do. You just need to keep in mind the different weights of the fabrics and reinforce thin fabric or stitching where washing will pull or rip the quilt

I work in a fabric shop and those circles are the bane of my existence! You will be unrolling a brand new roll of fabric and suddenly get them in the middle of the roll. When that happens we just have to cut a straight line either side of (if we're lucky and there's only a meter or so before it) we will just put it in the remnants bin but I agree its very wistful.

Several commenters have given quite logical explanations for the circles being cut, but my first reaction was to equate them with the cut outs on paint samples these days. This enables you to lay the sample on whatever you are trying to match and/or coordinate and see how it works for you.

God, I wish I had one of those stores near me. I Love, love, love that dress. Those colors go so well together. I want to make one for myself. Again, love your vids and look forward to watching them every Friday. Big Hugs.

I have a few "boring" white/cream/beige dresses that are made to go under my lace dresses, and that works very well for me. Also, I love doing cut outs and having lace underneath

I love listening to you talk about how you think. It makes me feel like I'm not the only one. 😊

"Should I start making lingerie?" My answer is yes! You get to enter into a delightful world where all of your lingerie fits perfectly, plus so many pretty elastics and other notions!! I even designed and make my own bras.

My instinct with lace (specifically the big lots of cream and black) other than as accents over other projects is stuff like insert lace or historical projects like the Jolly Holiday Dress from Mary Poppins! If you did want to venture into that direction this year like you've mentioned briefly recently, lingerie gowns seems like something that would help you use a lot of it! I think having a lingerie gown in your favorite dress pattern would be too funny. I think the colored lace would make an excellent paneled dress or skirt where you alternate the colors! I will say I worry about how you may enjoy wearing some of these lace items directly on your skin. I know texture on skin is a HUGE factor in how sewists create their works and I would hate for you to make something gorgeous only for it to have parts touching your skin that you hate.

We need a Remainders in Australia - Melbourne preferably - the Mornington Peninsula specifically. // I used to work in a dyeing factory, mostly knitted fabrics. The circles were cut out at a specific size, and used to test dye run, shrinkage etc. OMG That hoodie dress is gorgeous.

Enjoying all the fabric then suddenly drop an AWESOME HOODIE DRESS like it's nothing! Loved it! Literally said "oh wow" out loud, it looks awesome and cosy and comfy and stylish, even the patterned fabric, which would not be my kind of thing at all goes so well. Also love the fabric haul, I wish there was a 2nd hand fabric place near me, I've looks, there's stuff online, but it's not the same. Still, can get good stuff at charity shops.

I love the message in this. All of our industry truly needs to concern themselves with the volume of waste being created. Also, I too enjoy making and using lists along with the option of disregarding them entirely.

I love all of the lace. I’d personally be making gloves, over skirts (like a removable layer over any skirt), and adding it to necklines and sleeves.

the one's with pieces cut out 'randomly' - found out from my local Fabricland - they are either ones that had a stain that they cut out, or in the case of circles, likely were used to mock-up a dress on the dress-forms to show off the fabric.

I know this is not fabric related. But it sound like when some stores take food off the shelf that has either pasted or close to it's best buy date toss in dumpersters and pour bleach all over it so one can harvest it instead of donating to food banks. Let's just make so one can get it free whether fabric, food, etc.

T is probably Tencel. It is a type of high quality viscose made by the company Lenzig and has won prices for being super eco friendly.

One thing I've always wanted to try with lace (and I just haven't found a lace that speaks to me yet), is a two skirts of the same length on top of each other, with a solid colour on the inside (for modesty and also to make the lace stand out more) and the lace one on top for gorgeousness. I also want to do exactly the same thing but the top skirt is gauzey and with embroidered flowers or something, so it looks like the flowers are floating. I have no idea how either of these would hold up to snags and things but I still want them

My daughter got a sheer duochrome purple / green fabric from Joann's and wants to make me a similar skirt. We got black suiting material for a base skirt, then we'll figure out how to add the "Maleficent" fabric on a a removable overlay. That way if I need a quiet black skirt for adulting purposes, I have one. But if I need to lean into my inner evil fairy queen, it is on hand. 😂

The hole cut out of the sample fabric is so it will hang over a dress form to show how it drapes and to display the fabric in another way other than just folded on a bolt

I really enjoy listening to how other list-makers manage their lists. These past 2 years, instead of using a planner with set spaces, I started just keeping a dotted page notebook for all of my lists, separated out into commissions, personal projects, major projects with planned stages, business/product-specific items, event-targeted things, etc. It's just relaxing listening to others manage theirs as well. A job with flexible projects plus enjoyable planning speaks to my ADHD/probably autistic brain so much. Once again, your perspective gives me another way to think about how I've handled things in my life. I used to have long lists of projects and then get overwhelmed and sad that I'd never do all of them. But it's okay to just do what works in the moment between plans!

Last time I went to Remainders they were not only having a sale and doing the BOGO remnant bags, but they also had a bunch of bins of stuff they were giving away for free. I got a ton of striped knits with those stickers and the circles cut out of them, for free! I think, including yardage I bought off the bolt, remnants, and free stuff, I ended up getting over 70 yards of fabric plus notions for about $50. It was very hectic that day, though. I didn't realize all of the sales they would be having, but a lot of people were there specifically for the sales.

That is my favorite hoodie dress so far. I got my pattern in, now to see if I can be as creative as you.

Hi! I'm CD. I live in the middle of the Midwest, and I'm new to the channel. I'm so glad that you see this as a place to hang out and get to know each other! Right now I'm costuming "The Importance of Being Earnest" for my college. Your Dolman sleeves and Remainders hauls have been my companion through learning how patterns work, deciding to wing this pattern anyway, and through 42 feet of hand-gathering fabric for a tiered skirt because I'm paranoid that if I machine-sew it, it'll look like little pleats, and if I machine-gather it, I'll make it too small. 😅 Your work style is so similar to mine (pendulum from hyper-organized to hyper-erratic) and it's lovely to see someone else having fun like I do!

4:52 so one of my favorite things to make out of lace is different tops and dresses that you wear a colored tank/slip (respectively) underneath for contrast and to make the colored lace really pop lol for example make a black lace dress and a white, red, imperial-purple, sapphire-blue, or emerald-green slip to go underneath lol i do this with sheer/semi-sheer fabrics as well lol my favorite to make with sheer fabrics is make a full-circle top with a line of stitches on either side of torso making sure to make the space between the lines big enough to easily slip it on and off (i use a store-bought garment like this as my reference, but you get the idea)

One of my favorite things to wear is a shirt or dress with a lace yoke, where the shoulders and top few inches are lace but the rest of the shirt is solid. Or basic shirts with lace sleeves. Such a simple way to take a basic clothing item and make it more textured and interesting. Just make sure the lace is soft to the touch because I've bought shirts where the lace they used was itchy and that just ruined the whole garment since it was so uncomfortable

You have no idea how comforting it was to hear about your list making process and letting things jump the line and the process of reorganizing things and making more lists. I do really similar things and I always feel some arbitrary pressure to do new projects in a specific order, so it's nice to hear some validation that I don't need to impose that on myself. Btw how do you get yourself to finish projects? I end up getting overwhelmed with the number of tasks involved in a single project or running out of motivation and not completing projects.

That sample piece is for cutting samples for customers. You trim a bit to send to them so they see the color and weight in person (if online) or to take home for matching.

Those stretch velvets make great t-shirts. I'm so jealous, especially the purple. I too find it hard to resist.

I got mostly knits and knit lace when I went over Christmas. My sister in law lives in Pasadena and I told her I may be visiting frequently! 😂 best store ever!!!

I understand the jumping the line. I have 2 sewing projects going, 2 crochet projects, and I found a mercerized cotton voile tablecloth from an indoor flea market that had only minor damage foe $10. I became instantly consumed by making a 1930s evening dress inspired by Megara from Hercules. The list struggle is real.

My second watch. Creativity isn't encouraged in our society, admired, yet. I agree with Ur observations about it. Works 4 me. Retired I can get there more easily. I love ur reveals!

If you're still looking for lace ideas, here are some I haven't already seen: - for any stretchy lace whose texture is nice against skin: underwear! I'd love to see you evaluate some of the patterns out there, personally. Ditto for leggings and gloves - I agree that some sort of floaty nightgown/robe thing would be lovely, esp out of the black - a cardigan. Before you laugh at the idea of a cardigan made of holes, they can be surprisingly useful, especially if the lace is double layered! They were a godsend for me when I lived in CA, since I hadn't gotten used to layering and they folded up v flat. (If any of the lace has cotton or silk, they'd be best for this). This shop looks *amazing!*

The stripped lace gave me Mexican folklorico dress vibes. Obviously, you would need some solid fabrics for stabilization and some embroidery because that style needs embroidery and ribbon. New embroidery project!

Wait... you find making lists a pleasant relaxing activity? I guess I knew that there are people who enjoy them, but I hadn't considered that could be the case for people who experience chaos brain in same general type of way I do. I've always considered it a means to an end. It gets me closer to figuring out HOW to do the thing, or schedule it, or what I need, or reduce forgetting things... but I would never say I enjoy the list making itself, or even find a completed list with all the things crossed off all that satisfying. It's just a tool to me. It's effective. I wouldn't want to not have them... but I feel about the same about having a tool for clearing snow off my car, or a floor mop/bucket combination that works well, and is ergonomically suitable for me.
