A Thousand Lifers: Murder, Mayhem, and Meditation (Part 4)

Subscribe to VICE News here: bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News
America is locking up more people than any other nation on earth. Home to just 5 percent of the world's total population, the United States houses more than 20 percent of the world's prisoners. In the last three decades, fueled in large part by a national drug policy and legislation like three strikes laws, America has imprisoned more people in local jails, federal penitentiaries, and private correctional facilities than Stalin put in the Gulags. New court rulings have declared overcrowded prisons to be unconstitutional, and the sheer cost of incarceration is forcing prisons to let prisoners back out on the streets.
VICE News was granted rare access to go inside one of the most maximum-security prisons in the country, a place that's on the frontline of what could be a sea change in prison policy. Salinas Valley State Prison is home to America's most powerful prison gangs including the Aryan Brotherhood and Mexican Mafia. It's a place that's projected to have more than 700 assaults this year. In an institution that houses the worst of the worst, we see how one maverick warden is trying to turn the system around by rehabilitating murderers before they get returned to the streets.

I will tell you one thing...I am very happy for all the inmates who get to develop self insight and all that. I still don't want them in my neighbourhood. About 25 years ago I was the resident policy advisor for a program that housed Aboriginal inmates and reintegrated them into the city of Toronto. They were a tough crowd to work with and they had many upsets but like the warden says we have to start somewhere.

I really think if we had more people like him watching out for us, not just in the prison system but really in any field of society, life and civilization would be so much better.

A lot of the commenters on here mention that they're surprised that the host was a SEAL (because he doesn't "look" or "sound" like what they expect a SEAL to be). Rob O'Neill, the SEAL who killed Osama Bin Laden, said in an interview, "My sister could kick my ass." I'm sure he knows how to take care of himself and he was just having fun. But he made a good point. He definitely doesn't "look the part". Not all SEALS look like Jesse Ventura, or the Rock, or Ahh-nold Schwarzeneggar.

7.03 After 21 years, victims awareness, empathy... . Everybody changes. Who knows what this guy did but it might not be something that bad. Who is the real victim here. 11.18 Success story. All well and good but until we find ways to allow people with past records the opportunity to really succeed. To allow them the opportunity into business, real jobs, careers where a conviction that is 11 years old does not stop them becoming someone, then recidivism is imminent. People can change and given a certain period of time these people need to be given the hope of finding real careers and ways they can meaningfully influence and improve society. it is very hard for someone to opt out of earning 2k + a day on the street corner slinging bags when the only job prospect they can ever hope for is shovelling dirt for $100 a day. Rehabilitation needs to be a bigger picture.

Even if the prison and inmates were gone, salinas would still be raw. Vice should do a report on the town, now THAT would be a story. 831
