A Tankers View of the Strv 103 | Swedish Armor

The STRV-103 series, or S-Tank, is literally an angry doorstopper with a gun designed to gatekeep the Soviets. And I love it. For all of its good and bad

The S Tank is basically just a meme, pure fixed gun with absolutely no traversal of any kind, 3 man crew which can be dropped to 1, everything to do with it's ability to be amphibious, and the fact it has hydrolics on it. It's a meme, but a great tank nonetheless. The Swedes really know how to make the outlandish functional.

Pretty much everything in swedish armed forces can be handle by one man. (Well, maybe not the fleet). But even the archer can be operated by one man (but he have to jump posirion) Refueling and rearming a gripen. Can be done by one man. Sure it will take him like half a hour, but it can be done.

Trying to spot these things when hull down is probably a bigger nuisance than any other NATO tank out there. The low flat silhouette would be hard to find especially in forested hills and mountains. They seem very well designed for fighting from or falling back to fixed positions. It also looks fast for a tank, even if their top speed is only 37mph (60kmph)

Worh saying later when upgraded to the B model all tanks was equped with blands and they would extend it at speed and just plow down in position with like 4 inches of tank stickning out of the ground. I seen it done in a demonstration. They drive over a field than in the matter of a few second it just vanish from view. Where it use to be is just a pile of dirt and a telephone pole stickning out of the ground.

I'd like to point out that the design of the STRV-S goes in line with a defensive thinking. At that time, as you mentioned, Sweden was neutral (as today) and had "no" allies to rely on. Sweden had a total defence military, where the strategy was to not attack abroad but to only defend it self. That means building bunkers, dig trenches, put mines in place, make roads to possible air strips and to train all military personell how to defend from a possible invasion (Russia). This is why STRV-S is constructed to be able to dig it self down and keep a super low profile then wait for it's pray to drive by. When the kill was made you'd regroup and dig down elsewhere then wait for next target. But the flaw in my opinion (and many others) is indeed its incapability to drive and fire at the same time.

Total misconception of the Swedish military doctrine. It was defensive in the sense of not intended to invade other countries, but the main purpose of the armoured units were to aggressively wipe out bridgeheads and perform counter attacks. The series "Om kriget kom" here on KZread give a good idea about Swedish military planning.

Seeing these in person really drives home how ridiculously low profile they are. Considering the time period these were the designed, the dozer blade, and just the general terrain of Sweden they must have been potentially nightmarish for enemy armor to shift from even a hastily prepared defensive position. Specially when you consider the silly amount of anti tank mines and carl gustav recoil less avaliable to the supporting infantry.

The Traditional definition of a Main Battle Tank was indeed pretty much a tank that combines aspects of a Heavy, Medium and Light Tanks as in the protection and firepower of a heavy tank with the capabilities of a medium tank and the speed and mobility of a medium or light tank, and to an extent that is still the definition. What appears to be the new definition for a main battle tank is simply the *main tank used* in a country's military, such as for example in countries like the Philippines such as the Sabrah Light tank, though this is a light tank but given the context of the kinds of enemies the philippines would be facing, the limiting island/mountain geography limiting the movement of proper heavier tanks and just their tank industry only really capable of supporting a light tank, a light tank would suffice as the Main Battle Tank for the philippine military's needs and purpose

The S-103 is the most beautiful tank. Designed to shoot-and-scoot against incoming hordes of Soviet tanks. It's an interesting tactical choice that has not yet been repeated. Warfare has evolved to the point where tanks can fire on the move and they MUST. Stationary tanks are dead ducks in the drone infested, man-portable anti-tank missile rich modern battlefield.

Visibility is kind of bad for the S-Tank by Western standards and crew comforts are on Cold War French standards so... yeah. Not the best. The better question is... why you'd ever do that? Maybe Sweden has it as a backup plan but unless the world is ending I don't see it ever being done.
