Hi! I'm Tony! I have a bunch of other channels but this is the channel where I take off the gloves and crap all over your favorite vehicle using real world mechanics, my experience in matters of military procurement, operation and materials science. From Sci-Fi to Skunkworks nothing is safe..... Get ready to see things from a Tankers View. *(occasionally NSFW language) **(definitely innuendo, lots and lots of innuendo.) ***(oh and some dark army humor) ****( probably some memes too.)

    Probably more an exploration vehicle for colonists, as opposed to a scout tank. Just got to rumble about inhospitable enviroments while housing scientists and cartographers etc. a few sponsoons for when you encounter some local wildlife. The turret probaly being an add on once they started riding them to war. Pobably had an observation deck on top in the exploration role.

    The auto-cannon was a different beast in 1st edition firing 1 explosive round. The description in the rogue trader rulebook reads. "Auto-cannon are similar in concept to twentieth century tank guns. They are rapid firing and use mass-reactive explosive ammunition. They are mostly vehicle mounted because of their great weight". So when they decided to arm them this way i think they had every intent of it being a big beefy gun. However when the battle manual came about in late 1st and pretty much introduced what was 2nd ed rules the auto-cannon had morphed into the much smaller rapid firing thing we see in the game today. The predater was armed with this for 2nd and 3rd at least before they finally gave it its own stat line.

    Funny. Here's the actual design process: can we shoot the driver/pilot in multiplayer? Yes? Design approved! The only exceptions are the Wraith and Banshee--because Covenant vehicles were designed to be destructible in Halo Combat Evolved whereas UNSC vehicles weren't. Again, the reason why the vehicles are so iconic and so badly designed from the real world perspective is because they are designed to make sure the driver/pilot can DIE.

    I've always thought of the Malcador as essentially a Stug. Outclassed by an actual dedicated tank, but more than enough for a second line army or PDF. If you're holding a Hive city having a regiment of these things handy to clear the outer walls, under the protection of the big guns they're ideal.

    Check out the anime 86. Their spider mechs are more like late WWII tank destroyers. Paper thin armor, BFG, high mobility ambush predators. They also die. A lot.

  • @Wastelandman7000
    @Wastelandman7000Ай бұрын

    I agree they wouldn't be general purpose AFVs I'd think spider tanks would be specialized equipment for getting into or over terrain tracked/wheeled/air cushioned/anti-gravity units have trouble traversing. I think the Heavy Gear game uses them as artillery/anti-aerospace platforms for extremely mountainous terrain. With gears (humanoid walkers) and conventional armor/infantry as support and security elements. Then again, we don't know what future technology is going to be like. If they can get to space and move whole armies across interstellar distances and insert them onto hostile planets, who knows? Maybe their robotics technology is more reliable than our more conventional vehicles. Think of it this way, we still haven't come up with the first effective all robotic vehicle. So we're not even at the Wright brothers level of development. They are creating quads though. so there is development going on, just not for military use. But, I'd point out the first military tanks were derived from commercial tracked vehicles. So like I said, who knows what the future holds. Look up "How To Ride Kuratas" then realize that's from 11 years ago. Still anything from Hammer's Slammers would run rings around them and blow them to pieces with superheated plasma.

    The only place Spidertanks have a significant advantage over standard ones is in mountainous terrain, hence why Japan was so interested in the design. You can't get an average MBT up a boulder strewn / terraced mountain side, but you can get Spiders up them.

    I feel like the four-legged ones from the 86 - eighty six anime are a good representation of a realistic "spider tank" while technically being neither. Very lightweight and nearly unarmored leaves them very maneuverable with it's only notable value being it's main cannon. The white ones later on in the show are larger, slightly more armored, and come with a wider assortment of weapons.(The dub is unironically better)

    This is an even more maintenance hell than 2 leg 😅 The only SF alternative that makes sense is hover, humanoid has high center of gravity, spider can’t carry weight. In case we need to use walker it will resemble elephant or oxygen those are most weight bearing all terrain limbs that is proven for many million years

    In the sci-fi universe I'm working on one of the factions actually does have a "spider tank" ... which they use as mobile F.O.B's capable of deploying and supporting a whole battalion in the time it takes for it to get from orbit to planetfall. Oh and it's primary armament is a 16 inch railcannon

    Sci Fi rules combined with lowest common dominator military standards would likely make the legs as detachable isolated systems that you unbolt and replace with one off the logistics truck carrying that also carrying the spare tank barrels. The likely sensible tech to power these legs would be electric motors and each leg features it's own brain and sensors to that talks to all the other legs to help the driver achieve their goals without over burdening the driver on being concerned with leg arcs or walking/crawling with missing legs. The "thorax" transmission where it all attaches would be the field maintenance nightmare and more obvious weak spot. Unless material sciences improves vastly this would have to be strong enough to hold the entire tank up by this area to the point this is where you can attach a tow cable to this part upside down and in theory hold the entire tank up without stress breaking, this is the part alone that's going to make the spider tank more stupid expensive over traditional format tanks. Sure legs can add up but with increased tech the equally advanced treads of a standard tank of the day would likely be comparable especially if it has features such as tilting. Then there is the consideration of combat evolution doctrine, spider drivers would likely argue for use of the legs as sacrificial armor and parts to protect the body from missile and drone threats on top of existing counter measures. Traditional tankers would know to shoot the thorax or at least tow legs off. And then field of deployment and use of spider tanks gets settled. We're going to find that spider tanks in open flat lands are poorly suited, the extra ambulators will take up more energy and supply this lowering its deployment range, swampy and muddy areas are its bane, and tonn per tonn will have less armor and armaments at increased cost. More considerations of possible evolution of use and abuse is spider tanks could possibly replace legs with specialized roles such as gantries or lifts for vehicle repairs, a trencher tools to help with fortifications, recon legs to poke well above the body to take a peek, or maybe erect an impromptu radio tower receiver/transmitter. Lighter spiders to climb buildings with ambusher anti tank weapons like tow or javelin missiles then have the mobility to get away from retaliation. Then the tonn per tonn match ups likely to be used as urban defenders. The tanks will be able to peak over rubble around corners and long as the defenders have good Intel of their own turf can easily fight their way to cost effectiveness unless completely overwhelmed.

    @Wastelandman7000Ай бұрын

    It is difficult to justify as a main combat vehicle. If you replace servos with things like the myomer bundles from Battletech service becomes a bit easier. Cut the power. remove armor. remove bundle, replace bundle. Test motor functions, re-armor. Off you go. NEXT! The other factors in weight depends on how much, what kind and, if any armor does this thing have. If you look at the manga/anime 86, their Juggernauts are the equivalent of a WWII US "Hellcat" tank destroyer. Paper thin armor but a big ass gun used for ambush duties. Designed for speed rather than protection. As the pilots were considered expendable that makes sense in the setting. Though I still have no idea what powers them or how the servos work. If you have something like metal foam armor (that they're developing now for space ships) the armor could be very light. The "hip" joints would have to have some kind of shock absorber system to keep the unit intact. Though I think something more animalistic like a scaled down Zoid would be more practical as you can put more armor on the legs and protect the thorax area.
