A Storm of Swords - Chapter 57 - Daenerys V

From George RR Martin's "A Storm of Swords"
If you like what you're hearing, be sure to check out my channel, where you can find all of my A Song of Ice and Fire recorded chapters in order in playlists! And leave a comment! I don't care about any youtube algorithm reach nonsense but I love hearing from people who are listening!
I am in no sense a professional reader, voice actor, or what have you. I began this audiobook project some years ago when some friends of mine jokingly said they'd read A Song of Ice and Fire (my favorite fantasy series) if I personally recorded the whole series in audiobook form and sent it to them. Having now made my way almost through the first two books in the series, I decided to join the small community of people who post their own amateur audibook readings to youtube, and share my efforts.
I have no intention of profiting off of the work that is copyrighted to George RR Martin. This upload is a tribute to a series I deeply love, and I strongly encourage you to purchase these books. You won't regret it.
Also I should give full credit to my cat, Claudio, for the frequent background meows and purring sounds you hear throughout.

    STRONG Belwas is an absolute beast and I'll never forgive the show for cutting him out entirely. this chapter lays the foundation for one of my favorite theories that the poisoned locusts Belwas eats at the fighting pits in Dance are actually intended for him all along as retribution by the House of Pahl for killing Oznak here. awesome chapter keep up the great work !

    Thanks! I actually laughed out loud at that theory. It must have been the Shavepate, must have! But I love the idea that the Oznak family; who are not acknowledged beyond this chapter, was secretly plotting their own very personal plot that inadvertently screwed up the peace with Yunkai.

    The way Dany decides to stop thinking about kissing guys because she has to run kingdoms is so telling because that really is what a 15 year old girl should be doing (besides the whole considering marrying people so much older than her). She’s just a teenager, and while it’s great that she’s freeing so many people it’s unfortunate anyone her age would have so much responsibility

Just not a part of their mental universe, they valued bright and EXPENSIVE colors). Though I used a pretty comical piece of fan art to depict him in his first appearance, I’ve seen other pieces where Daario looks hot, AND matches George’s description. loving these readings btw :) your voices are incredible & I find your tone very comforting. I wonder if anyone else struggles with the way GRRM describes/depicts people of colour in the story or is it just me? I feel like a lot of the time, the non-white characters are depicted as 'savages' or just desperately devoted to their white leader (who happens to be the whitest white woman ever!), or only exist to further Dany's plot - why do we know absolutely nothing about Irri and Jhiqui, for example? I also don't know how I feel about physical descriptions like 'mongrel', 'flat-noses' etc, which generally have negative connotations. & obviously the whole 'Mhysa' thing is incredibly cringe and plain tone deaf. I realise there isn't really a sense of race in the ASOIAF world, in the same way we think of it, but I feel like that can be a bit of a cop-out sometimes/an excuse not to deal with the white saviour themes.The author must know that we're bound to interpret things through a modern, real-world lens, & the unfortunate connotations that a lot of these descriptions and plot points evoke. I am white btw, so I'd be interested to hear what readers of colour think.

  • @DavidReadsASoIaF

    Thank you! I think it’s a mixed bag, but I don’t think Dany is a “white savior.” I don’t even think she’s a subversion of a “white savior.” I think this theme comes up a lot because George wrote some of this stuff a little clumsily and contrary to his stated aims. He says he envisioned the Ghiscari as ancient Mediterranean people, without being specifically racially coded. You’re right though that a lot of the language is vaguely racialized and almost always in negative terms. I think that’s clumsiness on George’s part, in contrast to what I see as much better writing from him that subtly addresses race and the fantasy genre (I think Victarion’s rocks for brains racism, reacting with suspicion and terror every time he says a dark skinned person, has a very intentional relationship to the HP Lovecraft inspiration for the Iron Born - their racism and other terrible values, values shared in some sense by the real HP Lovecraft, are part of what’s going to doom them). But I think because, and I have no reason to think George is lying, he didn’t intend for the “white savior” imagery to be so central, that Dany’s arc more broadly deconstructs the idea of a savior warrior king. Another commenter pointed out that being “Mhysa” was never Dany’s original goal. Her original goal was the Iron Throne, and she was willing to do all sorts of incredibly evil things to get it (like selling the Lhazarrreen into slavery after destroying their homes and slaughtering most of them). That doesn’t really change when she becomes the breaker of chains. She doesn’t repent of the desire to conquer a continent and become its monarch. She does want to “plant trees” in Meereen, but she chooses to believe there’s no conflict between that and her imagined “destiny” as a conquering warrior queen. In the end she gives up on the planting of trees anyway. I think this has less to do with colonial and imperial themes than it does the idea of noble wars and rightful kings. But also George’s interest in exotic detail (he has a great quote where he talks about how fantasy should he “silks and jewels and habanero peppers and rich wines” etc etc etc etc) and self indulgence introduced a lot of stuff that makes this theme a little less obvious than it could be. That’s just my take though!

  • @hermirony123

    @hermirony123

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@DavidReadsASoIaF it's a great take! & I have no doubt a lot of it is unintentional/subconscious on GRRM's part. I have heard a lot of people claim that Dany is supposed to be a subversion of the white saviour trope, but that doesn't really do it for me personally. In order for that to be successful, I feel like the characters of colour around her would need to be more fleshed out and perhaps have their own chapters. I have no idea if this would work or make it worse (lol) but I would be curious to see, say, the sacking of Meereen, from the POV of the Meereenese. That way we'd see Dany through their eyes, as the big bad imperial invader. Admittedly, this is only my second reading/listen of the books (I read them once about 10 years ago!), so I'm probably more influenced by the show. I also love the show (pre series 7!) but have always felt like the writers desperately want us to love Dany, rather than see her as a morally grey character. Whereas in the books I suppose we get to see inside her head, which makes her more nuanced & perhaps less 'conventionally attractive white woman comes along to save the day, yaaas queen, you burn those evil foreign people' vibe. Haha

    The Lanister vs. Stark parallels the Wars of the Roses. Dani is a bit like Bonnie Prince Charlie as a expat royal. That's a few hundred years apart. Back off a few years to the Crusades and how Europe viewed the Middle East is roughly how I see the city-states Dani conquers. They aren't as developed because they don't need to be for the story. But also, from a Westerosi POV, understanding isn't necessary because they (the Westerosi) are more cultured. Use of descriptors like mongrel are coming from the character. (I'm a flat-nose myself and dont really think that's a negative descriptor. It just is.) Bear in mind that the other culture would think this in reverse. Slightly off topic, have you read or seen the mini-series Shogun? It's about a Portuguese ship pilot stranded in Japan in the 1700s. There are some great scenes about how each side thinks of themselves as the more cultured and the other as disgusting heathens.

    @@jenniferpearce1052 it’s funny you should mention it because in my spare time this last week I’ve been rereading Shogun, one of my favorite novels. I think you’re right about the way bias affects the POV characters who we read in Slaver’s Bay (and think this is particularly pronounced with Barristan), but I think, at the same time, that Ghiscari culture really does just suck, even if someone like Barristan misreads things thanks to his biases. One of the things that made Shogun extraordinary, I thought, was that the Japanese characters and Blackthorne really do have things to teach each other. Both are civilized and both are barbaric and horrifying(he also, cleverly, triangulated with the modern reader and the stuff THEY would find horrifying about both cultures mostly, the filth and murderous religious fanaticism of early modern Europe, the hideous brutality of sentencing entire families to death for an individual’s crime in feudal Japan, stuff like that). There’s no equivalent in ASoIaF to James Clavell’s really rich explorations of the Zen Buddhist conceptions of the self and life and death and so on. Which isn’t really a criticism - it makes sense that George doesn’t have this for cultures he made up from cobbling together historical and mythic cultures and spicing them up - just, I don’t think the Slaver’s Bay sections of the series accomplish, or try to accomplish, what Shogun does.

    @@DavidReadsASoIaF Oh, it's cool that you know what I was getting at! I haven't read the book yet, but saw the mini series for the first time a couple years ago. (I saw parts of it as a toddler, but that doesn't really count!) I agree, there really isn't a place for this in ASoIF. And I think that is a part of looking at ASoIF in a modern context of "does this book treat other cultures appropriately." These aren't real world cultures, but it's important to remember that there's not just one dominant culture. Everyone views the world through their own lens. To suspend disbelief, we need to be engrossed in the character's perspective.
