A Steel Pan Documentary - Sounds Like Steel (2023)

Музыка

Sounds Like Steel is an independent steel pan documentary that takes a deep dive into what it takes for steel orchestras to compete and win in the National Panorama Competition.
Filmed over 2 months in the run up to Panorama, this documentary offers the closest look yet into the culture that surrounds Trinidad and Tobago's national instrument, and the positive impact that panyards have on local communities.
Steel pan (sometimes called pan, steelpan or steel drum) is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. You can learn more about the history of steel pan in Kim Johnson's book; "The Illustrated Story of Pan."

The community, culture, history, the LOVE, the nurturing of the younger generations, this is just everything. And yes, the quality of this recording is the best I’ve heard of a large band, far less a panorama arrangement. As close as possible to experiencing the music live. Thank you so much for this labor of love.

Excellent work on the documentary. Highest praises to Mr Jerod Superville, social entrepreneurship and community focused organisations are holding a lot of communities and youth networks together, changing lives. This region has immense talent, culture and capability. We have to keep working hard and smart and maxing out our potential from where we are with what we have! Proud moment. Rah, I surprised myself, almost bussed a cry when I saw the response to the victory at 36:24

Now I love this documentary but I’m actually surprised that thee Winston Spree Simon, inventor and pioneer, wasn’t even brought up, not once! That man is responsible for what the steel pan means to the world today. It’s so unfortunate how little he is credited. I even remember hearing about a push to get the Grammy association to acknowledge his contribution within music, but I’m gonna assume it didn’t get far.. I know there’s still people out in Trinidad advocating for him, so he’ll definitely get his flowers soon 🌸💐🌺🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹

Thanks so much of your feedback, you're right that this documentary is pretty light on the history aspect of pan overall. Ultimately there's so much to discuss that this doc will only ever be a jumping off point for people to research more about the history, and I highly recommend Kim Johnson's book; "The Illustrated Story of Pan" to anyone who'd like to learn more.

That was a respect and a proud documentary that was waiting to come. So much good ground got covered that many people in Trinidad and around the world needed to see. Enterprise will always hold a place in my heart and for the Angel Harps to do well and win is always top notch. Keep the real culture alive yes, big up Real Heavyweight business....

A well-structured documentary that held my attention throughout. Even though it was quite long,, it did not feel like information overload. The different interviewees complemented one another, highlighting the different roles that go into making a panorama production. A good mix of elders and youth. I particularly liked the beginning, the way the history of the instrument/orchestra was presented over the pan tuning process. It was a good blend. Having viewed the whole thing, it seems to me that the documentary leans more towards highlighting the people dimension, with less emphasis on delving into factors directly linked to the making of the music. That is not intended as a put-down. Just an observation. Congratulations to the producer on a solid piece of work.

Thanks so much for your detailed feedback, this documentary evolved a lot over the course of production, so I'm glad that you enjoyed it! With regards to the focus on people, the doc was originally much more technical, with a focus on the instrument itself, but as the documentary reached a wider audience, I decided to shift to a story that would appeal to people less familiar with the instrument. This footage won't go to waste though, as I have a few extras from the documentary still to release, so stay tuned!
