The Steelpan: A Gem from Trinidad and Tobago! | Josanne Francis | TEDxBethesda
Born and raised in the twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Josanne Francis is an internationally known steelpan performer and arts educator. In this well-received performance, Josanne and co. play some of their favorite steelpan tunes and share a bit about the cultural context that created them. Born and raised in the twin-island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, Josanne Francis is an internationally known steelpan performer and arts educator. Her music delivers that special 'extra' that separates her from even the greats, and catapults listeners into a unique and exceptional place.
With hands that seem to float like the wings of a butterfly with a 'wand-like' touch, her music is not devoid of power when needed. Ms. Francis' music blends together and draws influences from traditional Calypso music, Jazz, Indian, Funk, Rock and Classical music-a unique mix which is not typical for the instrument.
Josanne has performed at venues such as the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall, and has appeared as a guest artist at festivals and universities across the United States. Currently, Josanne is one of 6 Artists in Residence at Strathmore for the 2017-2018 season. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

So proud of this Trini sister right here! Amazing performance!
Amazing skills, great performance Josanne!
The most musically ,versatile instrument created in modern times.A steel band with its assembly of various pans, when skilfully played can excell any orchestra in the range of sounds produced.Never a dull moment when any steel pan is played.
I love him so much ❤❤❤❤❤
Great sound !
Congratulations to Jossane for her outstanding playing. Also a great applause to the Bass Player and the Drummer, very good performance.
Beautiful in every way. What a talent.
Truly inspirational! Thank you.
Wonderful!
Trini gal bad bad bad
The NATIONAL INSTRUMENT of Trinidad and Tobago.
Amazing talent. BUT we have a marketing disconnect ... the audience can hear the music being prodiced but they cannot see the instrument as it is being played to produce the music. Trinis, we need to solve this. Put a mirror or camera overhead and project the image onto a large screen in the background. This way, the visual will be combined with the audio and the true talent will come screaming through. The hand coordination required to play the steeldrum is as complex as that required to play a guitar, keyboard or drum set.

I agree, especially for an educational focused program, it would have been much more appreciated if they had an overhead camera.

Thanks for your feedback! I do agree about the audience seeing the inside of the instrument as new audiences have no idea what my hands are doing! When doing educational workshops, I typically take the instrument off the stand and show it, explaining its construction. However, this was not that kind of presentation. When budget allows, I have a camera set up overhead and projected on a screen (check out my Strathmore and Kennedy Center performances).
