A Song Is Born Ep.1 | 80s Composing - How to make a song from scratch

Let's compose a complete song, from scratch, in real time. In a traditional singer/songwriter way. We structure chords, experiment with top-lines and try out some words. Very 80s and very much an authentic writer's session. Next time we'll build upon it, find some words and start arranging it.
If you have questions you'd like me to answer, maybe something from the video you'd like me to repeat and expand upon, or something else of this nature, I'll be available on a live stream each Monday after the episodes. At 9pm CET.
The live streams are only available on Patreon so you're more than welcome to sign up there.

A big thanks to the sponsors of this series: Antelope Audio, AMS Neve, Golden Age Premiere, Stam Audio, Audient.
Also a big thanks to Anders Jensen for letting me have some of his gear during the production of this series.
I must emphasize that all the sponsored gear came from me contacting the makers of it, asking them to provide it. This is the gear I wanted to use and I knew the gear from before. No sponsor dictated what I could or couldn't do, say or don't say, iwhen it came to the use of it.

Am I the only one that upvotes Espen's video before I've even watched one second? I just know it's gonna be great, so why wait till the end? 😁

It is remarkable how much equipment we could have and we still start with a grand piano. It is so baked in the head and could have main melody with a bass line at the same time. So perfect for prototyping.

Interesting to see our very different approaches. 🤓 I’m more focused on hooks, riffs and rhythmic patterns. I start by browsing for cool sounds and see what they inspire me to play. I’ve never been able to plan the entire song on one single instrument from A to Z. I’m too impatient! 😂

I think the squeaks from that pedal work wonderfully on the chorus. It gives images of somebody walking alone on a secluded autumn beach while seagulls fly above.

You're SO right about that little recorder. I even have a Tascam Portastudio for that purpose, but I'm absolutely terrible at remembering to record when I mess around. Todays smartphones are terriffic recorders too for quickly remembering something so there's really no excuse for anyone not to just turn that on, and you never know when you might be glad you did so. Thanks for reminding us, it's really a terrific tip!

So wonderful to see and hear you start a song. I wish I was close to being able to play piano like you, it would skyrocket my productions. I hope the rest of the series will be awesome too.

The 80s sound will rule forever. Im working on Billie Jean at the moment. Got most of the sounds down pat on my Reface DX.
