Agree with all the (in the end, minor - except the stupid "I am the only product that you own and I will be your sound card now, and I need drivers which will be dead in five years") annoyances of USB-powered smaller gadgets "instead of what we want". They should have perhaps have licensed the PC software emulation and put it in instead, if that accepts SysEx! :D I understand you had to struggle with things that are to be taken for granted in a new synth purchase. I wouldn't buy a new synthesizer that didn't have full-size MIDI in, out, and through, as well as a quality keybed. If we turn it around and really look at them as cheap gadgets, I think the Boutiques offer a lot, as long as you treat them as "what we got instead of rack synths which are the most sensible idea ever". If you have nothing and get two, you have two programmable synthesizers with knobs and faders. That's it - that's their best use. And it cost you $300 x 2 (more now because war). Still not for me, but I think that's a lot of fun for the money. The missing point for me was whether JX-08 accepts aftertouch in program parameters. I still don't know for sure.

A song intro can't be "iconic," nor can any Sound at all, for that matter. Only Imagery is iconic - i.e., a person or thing whose Image is famous, often with the connotation that is has become emblematic. (The word Icon, in orginal Greek, Means image.) In addition to being the most overused word on KZread, "iconic" is also the most MISused. Misusers seem to think the word means simply "widely known," "instantly recognizable," "memorable," etc. But just as flavors, scents, ideas, emotions, bodily sensations, et al. can't be iconic, neither can Sounds (songs, beats, bass lines, intros, etc.). No one (hopefully) would ever think to speak of "iconic ice cream flavors," the "iconic smell of sulfur," Marx's "iconic theories," the "iconic bliss of first love," or the "iconic pain of a toothache." Misusers do seem to understand intuitively that Iconic has some inherent relation to the human sense of sight - to the exclusion of the other senses referenced above. For some reason, though, misusers appear to unconsciously stipulate a special exception for the sense of Hearing - so that, in their minds, "iconic' can properly apply to the products of precisely Two human senses, namely sights AND Sounds. This error has become rampant due to the KZread Feedback Loop, wherein video-makers parrot and propagate eachother's mistakes. Indeed, if the word meant what misusers seem to think it means, we could call this common case of misuse an Iconic Linguistic Error.

However, if you're making more modern types of electronic music the D-50 will not be the right choice in most cases. If you're making 80s inspired synth music, like I do, the D-50 is mandatory.
