Both player and manager were right. There is nothing to argue about. Player is right to feel that way. But as manager, those weird decisions are why he is currently the best manager. Its always a learning process for both. I dont know why these folks are arguing.

When someone is making success they will always be a target for negative talk. Thats how envy and ego works. Someone needs to put the successful down. To find something....anything. Its not very professional from Gabriel Jesus. And the people in studio loves to find negative to say about anyone and especially the successful ones. Unconsciousness is driving them.

Steve's idea of football is so arcade. If Guardiola decides to play the goalkeeper ahead of the defender on that day,it is not necessarily because he doesn't fancy you but rather that he wanted to play a different game on that day than the one you are best suited for. Tbf, Zinchenko is an attacking midfielder, if Pep played Gundo as false 9 nobody would have had issue with it. Zinchenko is no different. People keep saying Zinchenko is a left back, he is NOT for God sake, Pep put him in the left back, he always played as attacking midfielder in his previous clubs also in the national team. Maybe, Jesus could have scored some goals 😂, we almost lost the league last year in the last game against Villa, because of him missing multiple sitters. Fact is, Zinchenko was not even played false 9 that game, Jesus just feels he is better than Zinchenko possibly and went mental to see him being picked first 11 before him. But with Pep, everyone is important, especially the people with the right mindset, the moment you start feeling entitled to a place you lose your place at all it don't matter how good you are. Coming from the bench is as important as starting a game, you have to come on with the right attitude. That's why we lost to madrid last season because every minute of the game is important and people need to understand that. Origi won UCL for Liverpool from the bench,

As a city fan I remember when David James our GK played up front as a striker. Managers make these decisions all the time. Sometimes to push players to be better. Jesus was mad and frustrated and when brought on made an assist and scored. So did pep really make the wrong decision? He does this a lot. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. The CL final vs Chelsea is an example of it NOT working. Playing Sterling instead of having a CDM was a stupid decision.

Also, we have no idea what had happened in the training sessions that preceded Pep’s decision. Was Gabby on point or was he sloppy or had there been a dust-up btwn the 2? We’ll never know. Lastly, what Jesus lacks in chance conversion in front of goal, he makes up with tenacity, work rate, dribbling passing etc abilities. Much have been said about Jesus crying but if you know Brazilian culturally they do cry, to them it's completely normal, they cry all the time, doesn't mean they are weak or soft, it's just their way of showing compassion, when happy, disappointed and even angry. That's the reason he spoke about it openly otherwise he wouldn't. Crying to them is a normal expression. The surprise is only in the west cuz people in the west are so locked up in their big little world and don't see what goes on in other geographies and find certain things as shock when in reality there's nothing.
I remembered jesus getting benched after brilliant performance. Pep always wanted a type of striker zlatanlike that is

the way Argentina won this time is they have a very strong bench. Dybala hardly played but he was / is the king in Roma. Should Dybala go to his mother and cry and leave the Argentina team because he would not be put in the first 11? And not one game, all the games even the final. He only got to the pitch for a few minutes. BUT, Dybala was needed in the penalty kick. With his fresh leg and energy, he scored. So was the final one (forgot the name) who put the goal behind the net. You put your club before you, ALL the time EVERYTIME. Sometimes, the coach wanted to have a striker with energy when everyone is tired. Look at Haaland 's first debut in Dortmund, he was full of energy and scored a hattrick in the last 10 or 15 minutes. So you think the coach didn't know that Haaland could score? It was his tactic not to put him in the first 11.

I'm a City fan and I love Pep, the team has improved exponentially from the great Mancini and Pellegrini sides. But a minor frustration I did have with Pep in the UCL over the years was the random lineup and formation changes. The teams that have won the UCL over the last 7 years (including City 2022-23) largely remained with their strongest lineups and formations, with few tweaks here and there. Pep overdid it, and we saw the prime examples against Lyon (2019-2020) and Chelsea (2021-22) when it looked like the City players were just coming off pre-season trying to implement a new plan. I'm sure some of the players got frustrated by this.

Fraud Pep you mean only wins because of the money. Stevie was a serial winner as a player in a decade that there wasn't much money around know who I more respect for.
I agree with Stevie Nicole. 100%
I can understand why 80% of the comment section is quick to praise Pep and criticize Jesus. Pep just won a treble at Man City, which adds to his legend and adds even more laurels to his growing cabinet of trophies. Unfortunately, the question isn't about trophies. It's about the manager and his ability to manage talent. Yes, Pep is a genius. He has won lots of trophies which is the metric by which managers are judged, and has managed some of the best players in the world while do so, but that does not mean in this situation, which has occurred before (circa Eto'o and Ibrahimovic), he hasn't failed in his job to manage great talent. Regardless of whatever masterful tactics and ideas he is conjouring in his mind, communication must always be open, clear, and constant. It is actually on this basis that I personally believe Pep does not hold up to some of the greats that are or have been in the game. Sir Alex, Ancellotti, Mourinho, and most recently, Zidane. A manager should be able to communicate to their players their plans and intentions. Cooking up events and situations to "frustrate" players away is sly, devious, manipulative, and, quite frankly, weak. Words that have been used by Eto'o and Ibrahimovic to describe the sort of man Pep CAN be. Whether you like Pep or Man City, in this case, Pep f**ked up. You don't under any situation play a defender in the place of a striker, especially when he is hungry for success, fit, understands your system, and is in form. Even Zinchecko, who was favored to play ahead of Jesus, could sense, feel, and taste the betrayal so badly that he apologized to Jesus. There are only a few places this should happen - video games like FIFA and Football Manager. If you think he was right to "do as he wishes" because "he is the manager," why didn't he pull this stunt with Lewandowski or Messi or Aguero or KDB. Please try to be honest with yourself when you process news like this one. The criticism may not be from a favorable source, but that does not undermine the validity of the criticism. Pep practices favoritism, and sometimes it turns around and hurts him. Ever wonder why even KDB had to snap at him towards the end of the season? Why Zinchenko left Man City? Cancelo? Why players who are arguably world-class unexpectedly jump Pep's ship? Normally, players wait until they have distanced themselves from the manager before they speak their mind. Jesus is no different. I bet you once KDB, Mahrez, et al. distance themselves from Pep, there will be some interesting interviews much more salacious than Jesus'. What happened between Pep and Jesus is similar to what happens at every place of work. This is why people who have given themselves to a company for years suddenly quit once they are passed up on some promotion or benefits package. If you've never been in this situation, personally, I don't think you'll ever understand what Jesus felt. It is the job of the manager to understand their players and get the best out of them while maintaining a cordial, professional, and respectful relationship. One style of man-management does not work for every player. Some require and soft touch others tough love. Because Mr. A (eg. Mahrez) reacted in a certain way when benched by his manager does not mean Mr. B (eg. Jesus) has to/will react in a similar fashion. Jesus was the next best thing in Man City after Aguero. To bench him for Zinchenko (or Bernando), regardless of their attacking prowess as a result of their natural position, playing style, from their days in the youth academy or in previous clubs without communicating your intentions, is an insult. A slap in the face. Period. That he cried and called his mother is not a sign that he isn't professional. It's a sign that he didn't have anyone in his team that he could truly confide in and won't be judged by or face retribution. In my opinion, Man City should count themselves VERY lucky because in an alternate reality, it could have been Jesus and Zinchenko, former Man City players in their prime when they were sold, that lifted the EPL trophy which would have been an devastating blow to the genius that is Pep. As for the UCL, Inter could have lifted it as well save for a few chances they failed to capitalize on. Let's not forget that the match was in no way going in Man City's favor. The best player in KDB went off limping, and even Kyle had to play through an injury. The trickery of Silva and the expensize yet imposing presence of Haaland wasn't cutting through. Oh, let's not forget Lukaku. If things didn't go as they did, I bet the folks praising Pep would be the first to support his ousting as Man City's manager. Kudos to Jesus for speaking up. It takes guts to air your frustration and even more to act on that frustration. I only hope he wins even more trophies, with or without Arsenal, because he is good at what he does. Scoring goals. He knows it. You know it. Pep knows it. Pep fans know it. Man City fans know it. Everyone knows it. I originally wanted to post some lewd remark about the folks speaking in Pep's favor. Something about coming off some act on a part of Pep's physiology, cleaning themselves and taking a moment to see things differently but I restrained myself because the point I am try to pass is more important than offending lovers of the game who are just like me.

I agree Pep is a genius and knows how to win. That being said we’ll never understand he’s decision’s. To be fair I’m not surprised because loads of top players left playing under Pep on bad terms; I mean Zlatan ruthlessly burnt him when asked about playing under him in an interview.
I’m not staying on the bench just because we might win. No top player is accepting that. Pep would never bench Messi to start a LB.

Not really
They talk bad about players being happy wasting on the bench but when somebody wants to leave and play more games it’s crazy just because you’re winning titles.
What you completely fail to understand is why Guardiola makes those decisions. Where his real skill lies is in getting his team to peak at the right time, and a lot of his decisions regarding team selection are more about future matches. If he sees a player beginning to peak too early he will reign them in to keep their momentum in tune with the rest of the team. Unfortunately for Jesus he also failed to recognise this.
Guardiola gets way too more credit. Its not like there are no other managers who won champions leagues with great teams and still do a good job anaging. Conte, ancelotti, mourinho, zidane, klopp and so many more have won champions leagues etc. But Guardiola has managed to make it all about himself by these crazy decisions. He won this time around by having literally the best striker, the best midfielder etc in the world. What ancelotti did last year was way more impressive but doesnt get the credit,

Conte has not won Champions league. But yes that decision was strange. Jesus had to option of being a squad player in a winning machine or being an integral part of a team that won win immediately and he chose the latter. For some it’s all about trophies, others is about being integral to success.
The best part of all of this is zinchenko played centre mid and the "huge champions league game" was absolutely dominated by city from start to up till the point jesus was brought in. Jesus simply couldn't play the way pep wanted his team to play no wonder he was let go.
Can't believe Stevie took the position he did.
I rate stevie for this
Zinchenko didn’t even play false 9 ffs. Zinchenko played in midfield because KDB was out injured and Bernardo was playing as a false 9!! Gabriel talking utter nonsense. Do people even do the research 🥴🤡

He did not play as CF, Jesus got that wrong, maybe he just felt he is better than Zinchenko and he should be picked first than him which is why he singled out Zinchenko, but the guy did not even play in his position that game. And Pep was right, playing false 9 because Jesus is not good enough helped City, it was not one single game, it was the entire season of playing false 9, he should've cried the whole season, he just has no respect for Zinchenko and his talent

If this was a liverpool player who talk shaait about the club and manager we would have seen a different response from hypocrite Nicole kidman
Zinch is a midfielder , who played fullback.Totally reasonable to play left midfield.
People in comments like to criticize...Reason why Jesus said zinchenko took his place is because Bernardo was played up-top and zinchenko filled in.. Naturally if Jesus played,Zinchenko wouldn't like in the second half

lol what a stupid comment. He did not say zinchenko took his place he literally said zinchenko played as false 9. Also do you think chasing a game after 1-0 is the same as starting at 0-0. City absolutely dominated the game from start to uptil the point jesus was brought in. Plus i clearly remember his "assist" hahahaah he tried his best to eff it up but luckily he couldnt do anything more then have a simple touch and his fluffed shot that edned up in the net we also remember hahaha

Stevie is spot on for the 2nd time this year. Shaka’s comments were unbelievable seeing that he was a player. Pep winning a treble does not excuse his previous bad decisions. Gabriel rightly scored a goal and an assist in same game so whatever plan Pep had didn’t work until Gabriel came into the game.

Without those experiments he wouldn't have won half of what he's won.. To be able to make this kind of decisions sets him above all. Players suffer from it but he wouldn't be Pep Guardiola of he didn't make those type of changes.

@@phiwobuthelezi9255 I agree, but the example here is outrageous and clearly did not work. I think Pep trusted his Barca players more than City or Bayern, even a few days before the final against Inter he talked about the quality of players and why he had to experiment. I remember him telling Iniesta before the 2010 World Cup “ no excuses, go and show the world what you’re capable of”, guess who scores the World Cup winning goal?
There is no doubt Jesus is world class. He has scored 85 league goals in 232 games and 19 in 59 games for brazil Absolute world class numbers. I am unsure why he isn't in the same debate as messi maradona or pele.

I don't understand why players dont go and talk to manager and ask what is it that I am lacking too start this game and then act on it and show them that ur the best they got there is not a player I remember who was playing below average under pep
😂😂pep is a genius
1. Zenchenko is an attacking midfielder that plays left back, just like Bernardo last year plays false nine in several games when Pep needed someone that drops to the middle and helps the team rotate the ball and create an overload and also drag the defenders and create spaces for the teammates, and also played Left-back when needed (against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final) 2. Jesus is not a world-class striker, he missed a lot of easy chances for city throughout the years and not particularly good at holding the ball and rotating it (at least not as good as Zenchenko) 3. Pep is the boss, He takes decisions and assumes the responsibility of the wins and the losses. You don't have to like his decisions but it's not personal, he takes the decisions that he thinks is the best for the team according to the opponent way of playing.

this is true city were dominating the game until jesus was brought in. I was so happy to see him leave for arsenal. MAde the title easy for us. You might think he was injured and that is the reason he scored 11 goals last season. But you will find out he is useless soon and will be replaced or arsenal will never win anything. hahahahahaha
What if jose did this, what would you lot be saying?
Only Steve is right! all the other pundits are talking about old man wisdom not as prideful young footballers. Success footballer should have some constructive ego.The question is what will you do? What it matters the trophies if you feel sidelined, e.g. what it matter Hazard’s trophies @ Real Madrid for example.
Ofc it sucks, but it’s a competitive game, and Pep is the best itw. He’s alway chopping and changing. It hurts coming from an athletes point of view, but sometimes ur not the best option or the way the manager wants to go

What is Steve talking about. Zinchenko even never played a false 9. It's crazy what Steve is saying.
God forbid espn does an ounce of research to see that ZINNY PLAYED LM
First of all, Zinchenko is an attacking Midfielder. Pep has utilised him as left back and people now think he's actually a LB. 2nd, Zinchenko did not play the false 9 position in that game. 3rd, You can never tell what Formation and strategy Pep is going to play just by looking at a starting lineup. Fact of the matter is, Jesus did his part and has moved on. So have City. This whole thing is needless. Imagine how John Stones also felt when he was benched for Eric Garcia, Fernandinho and Kyle walker as CBs.
