Interesting, I've played for over 5 decades and this video was very helpful One thing I've found on guitars (in general) under $400 USD are issues with the frets. Many of the budget line guitar (especially S/S frets) the builders have a tendency to overcut the slots and do not radius the fret wire properly before installation. This is especially evident with the pre-cut hemispherical frets. What happens is a hollowing or deadened tone up and down the neck because the strings are NOT truly making proper contact with the fretboard via the frets (glue helps to hold the fret in but does not lock the tang into the to the neck's fretboard). With N/S frets you can sometimes lightly hammer (using the proper hammer) each fret to improve fret to fret to fretboard contact (after you'll need to check for fret leveling). However, with S/S hemispherical frets (when you hear that deadening tone) only a new fret job improves the tone and kind of defeats the purpose of the purchase in the first place. A couple discount makers have a "decent" quality control procedure in place but MOST do not with the S/S hemispherical frets. Cheers!

I had some problems with my guitar sound in the past, especially in the band context. I couldn't hear my guitar...and it was not a problem with volume and gain. And than I decided to buy an equalizer to find the problem. After adjusting some of the frequencies, I was able to hear my guitar again. That really helps me to understand how the guitar sits in the mix with bass, drums and other guitars. In a band with more than two guitarists it's even harder to find the right place for each guitar. The most important thing for me is to get defined and different rhythm and lead tones, especially if the guitars are similar (both are Stratocaster..). It's a lot easier if one plays a Stratocaster and the other a Les Paul... To adjust a good guitar sound is sometimes a challenge but it's much easier now. It also depends on the music styles we play. It's also important to come to some agreements about the structure of the song and the necessary frequencies for each musician in the band, to get a good band sound. So I really recommend to buy an equilizer.

I've played in a tributeband to the Foo Fighters, so 3 guitarists - and one bassplayer who's overly active on fuzz and overdrive pedals too, so thát messed up a lot of the sound 🤣🤣😭 We, the 3 guitarists, had to find our own niche in the sonic spectrum. One plays a Fender Tele Blacktop (2 humbuckers) with a Rat drive into a Fender amp. So that's pretty harsh on its own, but great for soloing. The other plays a Gretsch straight into any moderately driven amp, and that's quite dark sounding but with a good hint of clarity as well. My setup is my old Flying V into a Laney IRT tube amp, gain set to pretty high to get a good solid *CHUG* going. Which formed the middle ground, for those tight rhythms. So, basically we did the equaliser thing instinctively - made it work really well, actually 😎🤘 The only complicating factor is always the sound guy, as they always try to level EQs, and consequently just turn down one or more guitars to prevent the muddiness they created themselves... 🙄 In the rehearsal room we had the amps running just loud enough, and aimed at ourselves. Otherwise it's just overkill 🤣

@@claudevieaul1465 exactly the same scenario in our case when we play a gig. But I always reduced the volume knop on my guitar and on my boost to have extra power during the gig, if my guitar is too silent.... Also some rooms are horrible and the sounds are sh..... Than we have to experiment a bit how we can get a good band sound. I started to play baritone and this makes it a little bit easier for me to find my niche in the band. But anyway it's making a lot of fun.

G'day Waylon, Thanks for another great video. I haven't checked my answers yet, but I do have a couple of comments for you. 1. Please don't forget your viewers who are watching YT on a TV & 2.1 stereo. 2. The method you described mid way through the video is called "bracketing" - like the method for tuning MTB suspension. The idea is that as you're trying either extreme, you work your way towards the middle by not going all the way back, ie. 0, 10, 1, 9, 2, etc. When you go in one direction, & find that the tone is worse, go back to the previous setting, which should be the desired tone. I hope the 2nd comment makes sense. Keep up the good work Andrew BTW, the last time my mum commented on my music, she said; "Buy that guitar, not the other one." And all dad could say was; "Do as your mum says."

Nice vid once again. Straight to the point and informative. I've also been doing some frequency matching against benchmark record tones that gives me a great visual as to the points of difference.

If your guitar tone sounds epic by yourself at home then you're going to get lost in the mix. Setup some kind of reference to play with, looper or backing tracks can get it done. Well placed boosts are often the answer. And remember gain is not volume.....
