Hey Stephan any thoughts on how to pull guard in a way that more realistic for today's tournaments where it I take that much to to get set up, the other guy will just pull first?

  • @StephanKesting

That can totally work. Tomoe Nage doesn't work as well in BJJ as Judo thanks to the more defensive posture, but it's still a great way to pull guard

A few answers maybe. It might be that pulling guard rather than breaking the clinch and moving away and back out into striking range is not desirable. Another is that while it looks disadvantageous, there's actually a lot one can do from guard in terms of punch block/defense, positional improvement/reversal, & submission setup Also, it can count as a takedown.

Pullind guard should be penalized...and that's the end of the problem, it should only be allowed when you take your opponent with you to the ground...in a clear attempt at submission or at least to take him to your guard.

Agreed, looks like an intentional attempt to take it to the ground, bjj is so great for sport. In the street this is stupid. Learn Shoulder throws, hip tosses, and wrestling slams and suplexes. Catch wrestling and Judo is far more interesting to me than bjj.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Looking at this purely from a self-defense perspective, this is really bad tactically. For sport or competition this might be fine. However, you would not want to do this in a real confrontation.

ryan dravinski Tbh “ in the streets “ this( all BJJ) could work. If you trained in any self defense/combat you’re 2x better than anyone fighting in the streets because people in the streets aren’t thinking of their next move they’re just throwing punches/head hunting and doing take downs
