    It makes sense, especially with a role like this that honestly wouldn't get the same impact from someone who isn't deaf. With this VA, she knows the pain this character goes through, knows the hardships, so she understands the character better than anyone else.

    Hey, I remember you. Thankfully you won't have to condescendingly berate me this time though because I actually think this dub sounds great. And I agree, mad props to them for casting an actual deaf actress. I mean, the Japanese dub didn't do that and it sounded great, but it should also be kept in mind that the JP voice acting industry is generally far larger and more talented/flexible, so it was a smart move for them not to try and make a non-deaf actress mimic it. So unlike Your Name, I'll actually feel comfortable showing this film dubbed to my friends.

    I honestly love this. It's amazing the dubbers reached out to an actual deaf actress to play a deaf character, it would have been so easy to just cast it like any other anime. The willingness to reach out to the deaf community and show representation of them through their own characters in fiction is marvelous.

    I also appreciate when they cast children in dubs, as well. To me, that approach made shows like NADIA: THE SECRET OF BLUE WATER arguably work better than their Japanese counterparts. Whether the actor in question has experience or not, I appreciate authenticity and any "green moments" don't make the effort unwatchable at all. If anything, they should be commended for their efforts, not put down as a terrible dub, especially if it's a daring, genuine effort.

    @@nemowindsor8724 Ultimately depends on the circumstances. IMO I do prefer actual children to play child roles, but there have been some cases where you can get away with an adult voicing a child: Brianne Siddall in METROPOLIS, Veronica Taylor in NIGHT ON THE GALACTIC RAILROAD, and several others have all proven they can do so. Even the guy who plays Edward Elric in FMA has won fans for his portrayal. Again, it depends on whether there is care involved in the production or not. A SILENT VOICE is one dub that works to its benefit because it goes the extra mile.

I still love Saori Hayami for bringing life to the character. She is a cool voice actress and she is one of my top favorites among other voice actors. However I hope Japan one day will give voice actors with certain disabilities a chance to voice in anime.

    Well there are various levels of how deaf people can enunciate. The Japanese va seemed like she was playing someone who couldn't so well whereas here it's someone who speaks almost like people who aren't hearing impaired. Plus even though I loved her Japanese voice there's also the language barrier that further obscures her clarity.

    FlyingFocs Even the director of the MHA anime called the dub perfect. Dubs in general and all who work on them are respected in Japan, yet that's still not enough for those crybabies. 90% of the time, their complaints are geared towards how the voices sound and not how well delivered they are. Shows how little they know of quality acting. They care more about whether or not they sound like their precious Japanese voices than they do anything else.

    CharenZard plus you have the old classic with three fingers from the director so enough times and you can time it out yourself, as well as if the actress is the same amount of deaf of Shoko she could actually hear a little bit thanks to the hearing aids so the three beeps can work if by nothing else than knowing three sounds happened in sequence and then starting.

    In that case maybe they should just stop using real signs altogether hm? Maybe they should just use more pleasing hand gestures as well? Frankly, I don't see the point of doing a fake deaf accent when you can just get someone to do a real one...

  • @oreoj7346

    @oreoj7346

    6 жыл бұрын

    You're forgetting practicality. Would it be easier to invent a new string of hand gestures or just to take from what already exists? Besides, my point still stands because even if they used something that's not actual sign language but communicates the idea that it's sign language, it would totally work. People who aren't familiar with sign language wouldn't bat an eye. Why fake a deaf accent? because you'd have an extremely small pool of people to hire from while still screening if they're fit for the part or can act well. It's a matter of opinion, but in this case I feel the performance is poor. Which leads me to believe they hired this person just for the authenticity of it. It's a novelty. Also, emphasis on the job title. voice acting. acting. You pretend to be a character that you're not. I don't see why a deaf accent is exempt from that and you absolutely need to have an actual deaf person. It's like saying, why hire an English person to do an American accent when you can just hire an American with an actual American accent. Hmm I dunno. Cus their acting and performance is better? My point is, authenticity should be a plus and not a primary concern. Again, in the end it's all on how you see her performance. I find it distracting even if it's real and that's why I have a problem with it. If you don't that's fine by me

    You know, dub haters, it's okay to prefer something subbed if that's what you want, but it baffles me as to why you feel the need to invade dub trailers and proclaim "English sucks, Japanese is superior!" all over the comments section, which is tremendously ironic since English is the language you use every day and it's the same language you're insulting. It's annoying to those of us who enjoy dubs and a sign of how insecure you truly are. Do you think it makes all of you anti-dub types special to watch something subtitled in another language that you don't even understand? Do you feel like you've become "part of Japan" because you watch all anime subbed? Maybe mull over that for a while and try to fix your behavior because those of us who prefer dubs don't want your hate spewed on dub trailers. To the person named Turnajon who replied earlier, I'm afraid you don't have a clue about the behavior of dub haters. They need to be told off time and again. It's not about berating others, it's about becoming irked by their hostility toward the English language.

    Flegan777 Well said, that was beautiful. But in all honesty, I prefer the sub over dub, don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with the dub, I'm just used to the Japanese voices

    @JustAnother Face: And that's perfectly fine if that's your preference. You're sensible about it and you're not going around being an ass telling others to "stick with subs because dubs suck". It's the anti-dub types I can't stand.

    a) you seem to be getting somewhat frustrated at people who troll in a youtube comment section, which you get for just about every sub-genre out there. telling people to "fix their behavior" means nothing on the internet b) i actually like the english language, but if people choose not to like it, like any language, that is ok too
