Obviously Peter Sellers is great, but I think Herbert Lom as Dreyfus deserves a huge shout out as well. To me he is equally hysterical, the laugh, the eye-twitch, he's really a brilliant comedic actor. One of the many things that drew me to my long term partner was his excellent Dreyfus impersonation❤️

Same. Herbert Lom is a Great dramatic actor as well, but his comedic chops were on a par with Guinness and Seller. Someone mentioned Ladykillers, and just this year I learned that Guinness’s role was originally written for Alaistair Sim, and if you think about it, Guinness’s performance is a great homage to Sim.
Peter Sellers, the most brilliant comedian who ever lived. His portrayal of multiple characters in Dr. Strangelove (you should watch that) has never been equaled. We won't see his like again.

"I believe everything and I believe nothing. I suspect everyone and I suspect no one." Makes me so happy to see people finally reacting to the original "Pink Panther" films. Peter Sellers is definitely one of the greatest and throughout the film series, it showcases why he's one of the all time greats. Hopefully you guys do react to the other films: "The Return of the Pink Panther" (1975), "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" (1976) and "Revenge of the Pink Panther" (1978). These films will definitely make you die of laughter and makes your day better for it.

It might be of interest to know that the screenplay for 'Shot...' was penned by no less than the late William Peter Blatty, who would go on to write 'The Exorcist' - both source novel and screenplay (for which he got the Oscar for) - several years later... talk about a contrast! Fun reaction! "The Pink Panther" began the series. It was suppose to be a starring turn for David Niven, but Sellers stole the show. "Shot" solidified Peter Sellers as a comedic genius and Blake Edwards the perfect fit as director. "Dr. Strangelove" has Sellers playing three different roles and it came out the same year as "Shot" -- 1964.

For my money, this one is the best movie in the whole Pink Panther series. Just that long opening sequence "in the shadows of Paris", abruptly interrupted by the titular shot and cut to the animated credits with that amazing Henry Mancini tune, is masterful. If you want another great Peter Sellers comedy, his other great collaboration with Blake Edwards is "The Party". A couple of the other Pink Panther movies are quite fun too.
My sister Jen and I watched this movie religiously. It came on TCM I believe and we recorded it on VHS and just watched in between Willow and Ghostbusters. Jen and I can quote this film beginning to end!!! Bless whomever voted for this God level comedy.
“A Shot in the Dark” was originally a comedy play. Blake Edwards took it and decided to make the main character Clouseau, who was also in the original Pink Panther movie, an ensemble film. Later Pink Panther films centered on Clouseau.
The recurring paddywagon taking Clouseau away had me laughing harder than any other film gag I've ever seen.
My wife and I had our honey moon at a cabin in the mountains. They had a vhs player with like… 8 tapes. We put this on and fell in love with it. When we got home we rented all of the pink panther movies. It’s a special movie 😊

It's also another film by Blake Edwards.
As an FYI, Herbert Lom and Peter Sellers acted together in an earlier crime/comedy, "The Lady Killers", also featuring Alec Guinness. Produced by the English film company Ealing Studios, which specialized in small, very darkly humorous stories. Among their other treasures: "Kind Hearts and Coronets" and "The Lavender Hill Mob". Guinness plays major roles (and I mean the plural of "roles" in all three -in "Kind Hearts", he plays 8 characters).

@@Yngvarfo Lom is wonderful in it - strikes a fantastic note. For Sellers, it's an early role for him, so it's true he doesn't quite stand out beside the others; but, one of the gifts of Sellers' talent was his ability to be unrecognizable from one role to the next - a standout for him there is "Dr. Strangelove", where he plays three parts, each one its complete own.
Older movies often used very long, continuous shots. It wasn’t until later that quick cuts became more common. These days, a long continuous shot gets noticed because it’s so unusual, but it used to be the norm. Often they approached a shoot like they were recording a stage play and the actors were used to doing 5, 6, 7 minute long scenes.
@ThreadBomb

But a long MOVING shot was usual due to the heaviness of the cameras.
Sellers was also an amazing serious actor, though he got very few chances at doing it. "Being There" is possibly one of the best movies I have ever seen, but it's very, very unexpected for a Sellers movie.
Backstory: I actually saw all of these movies between the ages of 6 and 8. I loved slapstick and my dad was a big fan of this series. Of course, the sexual stuff just went right over my head. I only paid attention to the slapstick comedy. So obviously I have a deep appreciation for these movies. 😉

BTW, the cartoon the Emily mentioned was actually sort of a spinoff from the movies. The cartoon was used in the opening credits of the other movies and the character was so popular that they made regular shorts with it. Those were later used in a TV show.
You'll be wanting to get to the Marx Brothers' movies as well as the rest of the Pink Panther series if you really like this kind of humor. Peter Sellers is also known for playing three characters in Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove and also the movie Being There. He was in a BBC radio comedy act called the Goon Show in the '50s which was a heavy influence on Monty Python.
I just love it whenever Emily watches a comedy! Lots of LOLs.
I love the Peter Sellers Pink Panther movies so much. I have the set and watch them from time to time. They never get old. I find myself saying things like - that problem is "sol-ved" in real life... and people just don't get it! But the wake of innocent victims he leaves behind... incredible. Even more so since he never seems to realize how many die just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time (ANYwhere near Clouseau).
Peter Seller was a GENIUS, whenever I have a bad day, I watch his performance in this franchise. Especially a shot in the Dark, which I find to be one of the most hilarious of the series.
I'd like to thank you for reacting to this movie. For years, I've been begging KZread reactors to react to this movie and, of course, been completely ignored. About a year ago, I switched from asking reactors to do this movie to asking them to react to "The Pink Panther" instead, since this is actually #2 in the Pink Panther series, but I am very glad you're reacting to it, although I might be slightly more glad if it were being done by one of the dozens of reactors I've begged to do it over the years. The entire Pink Panther series is brilliant and very fun.
I literally gasped out loud when I saw you reacted to this. Oh please God is it finally time for reaction people to discover really great old 60's movies and TV? Yay!! The funny thing is, A Shot in the Dark is the basis of the character moving forward. All of his mannerisms come from this.
Inspector Clouseau is one of the most iconic comedy characters in cinema history. The bumbling detective schtick never gets tired
Cluso is French for clueless. Which explains the premise behind the entire Pink Panther franchise :)
Inspector Clouseau is just an entire mood.
Some audiences loved the animation at the beginning of these films so much that they created the separate cartoon show from it.
This was actually the second Pink Panther movie. The first one was just called The Pink Panther and it was originally supposed to be about a handsome playboy jewel thief called The Phantom played by David Niven. But Peter Sellers (who wasn't even the first choice to play Clouseau) quickly stole the show. I always thought it was interesting how this series morphed into something very different.
FInally!!!!!!!! I have been waiting since the beginning of KZread for someone, anyone, to react to this and before now all I have found was one reactor with no sense of humor who treated the whole movie like it was a serious crime drama. This is by far the best of the Pink Panther movies and if you ever watch The Pink Panther Strikes Again you will understand what high praise that comment is. Top ten all time favorite comedy for me. The two bits that always get me are when he gets out of the car and falls into the fountain at the beginning and when he runs to break down the door at the recital and ends up going out the window into the canal thing outside.
Got introduced to this by my father when I was a kid. It never fails to make me laugh
Clouseau's butler Kato attacking him is a running gag throughout the series.
#Emily because you enjoyed him, A bit of info regarding Peter Sellers. Peter rose to fame as being part of a British comedy troupe The Goons on the British radio show The Goon Show. Peter Sellers had a master talent of voices and mimicry. Peers said he could effortlessly mimic strangers with only a few minutes of interacting with them. He became a worldwide star with 5 films in a short period - I'm Alright Jack (1959) - Lolita (1962) & Dr Strangelove (1964) Both directed by Stanley Kubrick and Pink Panther (1963) where he was the co-star to David Niven and then starring in its sequel, this film. He continued to act in comedies throughout his career. Later in his career most notably Being There (1979) before his death in late 1980
*Ladykillers* next, please. The original from 1955, with Sir Alec Guinness, Herbert Lom (Dreyfus) and Peter Sellers (Clouseau).

I do recommend y’all see The Pink Panther. It came out before this one and Clousseau was not the main character. I guess everyone liked him so much in that, that they made a series just for him.

I like this movie a lot. I like the small bits of dialogue like when Ballon says "it's for you inspector" and he replies "Ah. That would be for me." Or when Dreyfuss shouts at him to get out and he says the unnecessary "You want me to leave?". Very funny for 1964.

The first Pink Panther movie, absolute classic..you just have to submit to the silliness and enjoy it, still cracks me up
More Peter Sellars? I recommend The Mouse That Roared or Murder By Death. For him in a more serious movie, Being There.
A Shot in the Dark, is supposed to be a Prequel to the Pink Panther. This was a decent "Pink Panther" movie. The whole billiards scene was genius. "he killed her in a rit of fealous jage!"
This movie is just great! Sellers as Clouseau, Herbert Lom as Dreyfus and Burt Kwouk as Cato are all brilliant. And the nudist colony scene! I've never been able to look at a guitar the same way again! 😁😁
The Pink Panther in these movies refers to a diamond in the first Pink Panther movie.
A true genius of comedy, you would love his film "The Party"
The two moments that give me the giggles every time are the quiet ticking sound as Clouseau walks over to Maria at the nudist colony, and when he breaks the fourth wall at the end. The look of frustration on his face is so good.
Ah the first Pink Panther chapter. A classic! I know you guys are going to laugh so much at the actual Pink Panther episodes that followed later.
If they do a film about the Inspector's American granddaughter, Emily's a shoe-in.
The inspector got his own cartoon about the same time as the Pink Panther did.
When Clouseau gets his hand caught in the globe, he also says ‘Quick nurse, the screens’. This was a reference to the popular radio series from the 1950s, ‘The Goon Show’, which was Sellers’ first notable work where he voiced several characters and one of his three main characters, Major Bloodnok, would say that line in moments of panic or when trying to take control of a situation.
Dad was a big fan and got me into these movies at a young age. and for a long time, a 'bump on the head' was always spoken a la Clouseu

The part I can't believe you DIDN'T comment on: "She was having an affair with my husband." "You're a fine one to talk: your husband was having an affair with my wife." That 90 or seconds has me in stitches every time I have watched this movie. But damn, just how in hell did those actors hold straight faces for that long? You might notice it was basically one long take - and Peter Sellers was a notorious giggler. So you know that had to take an eternity to get on film. But worth the effort - it's one of my favorite scenes of all time.

William Peter Blatty was a brilliant comedy writer, and it shows even in his horror stuff. Exorcist III (written and directed by him) has some really funny exchanges between Lt. Kinderman and his friend Father Dyer.
A Shot in the Dark is amazing. If you ask people to tell you what kind of comedy movie the original "Pink Panther" is. They will often describe this one. Its kinda like how you ask people what the "Mad Max" franchise is and they describe the look and action of The Road Warrior and NOT the original film that started the franchise. Its like they are both sequels that re NOT sequels.
First movie, The Pink Panther introduces Clusseu. The Pink Panther was the name given a flaw in a Pink Diamond. It was a Jewelery Heist movie. Sellers introduced the Character. Shot in the dark was the successful follow up. .
Awesome!!! Such memories, late dad's favorite films. Wait to you all get to the later ones when the commissioner completely flips out
The theme of this movie including the inspector cartoon got me doing sneaking around when my folks are asleep to watch tv every morning
The humor is top notch. The side trips it takes. Especially the inspector and his growing hatred of Clouseau. Also the constant arrests of Clouseau and being hauled away in the paddy wagon. My favorites were the dead bird suspended in the rear window. And the two cops staring in the windows at the nude Clouseau and Gambrelli. Too many funny scenes to talk about. Glad to see your reaction to this movie. Peace!
In the 60s they were both pink panther cartoons, and Inspector Clouseau cartoons
One of the great classics of all time.
Congratulations on finding an actual act of genius.
Actually I believe the Pink Panther never spoke. The Mountain Lion that said Exit, stage left, was Snagglepuss if I recall.
The Pink Panther series is great, but this is without a doubt the best Clouseau episode. Also, when they are in the nudist colony and Maria says "look at my goosepimples", that single note on the guitar that we hear, that wasn't played by any of his fingers. LOL
My favourite of these is The Return of the Pink Panther, with Christopher Plummer as "Sir Charles Phantom - the notorious Litton".
George Sanders who played the British guy that Clouseau played pool with was the voice of Shere Khan in the original Jungle Book movie.
A great choice for a reaction! For me, this is the funniest of all the inspector Clouseu movies.
Peter Sellers is also great in the mouse that roared and his last role being there for which he won an Oscar

This film was adapted from the play "A Shot in the Dark" which opened at the Booth Theater on October 18, 1961 and ran for 389 performances closing on September 22, 1962. The original cast included Walter Matthau, Julie Harris, William Shatner and Gene Saks.
Peter Sellers' was the master of slap stick timing comedy. One of the Goons from BBC radio along with Harry secombe and spike Milligan, and Michael Bentine.
"The Pink Panther" was a perfectly fine movie, but "A Shot In the Dark" was the one that truly established the universe of the Peter Sellers "Pink Panther" franchise that we know and love.
*A Shot in the Dark* originally wasn't supposed to be a Pink Panther movie since Sellers didn't want to do another Inspector Clouseau movie. They tried another actor for the sequel of The Pink Panther movie called *Inspector Clouseau* with Alan Arkin. That movie bombed and Blake Edwards (producer, writer, director of The Pink Panther franchise up to the reboot with Steve Martin) convinced Sellers to be Clouseau in *A Shot in the Dark.* To make this movie the sequel to The Pink Panther. *A Shot in the Dark* is the best & funniest Pink Panther movie in the franchise. Note: *A Shot in the Dark* originally was a Broadway play.
Here is some "Shot in the Dark" trivia for you: the movie was based on a play that originally had no connection to the Pink Panther franchise. Peter Sellers and director Blake Edwards hated each other so much by the end of filming that they vowed never to work together again (though they eventually made three more Panther films in the 1970s). But MOST IMPORTANTLY, Zack Snyder owes his career to this film, after Edwards's karate instructor suggested that he film some of Cato's martial arts scenes in slow motion.
This and THE PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN are probably my favorites of the Peter Sellers films. I have a soft spot for the two Steve Martin movies, though.
