A Short History of Louis Vuitton Travel Trunks | Christie's
Discover the history of Louis Vuitton travel trunks with handbags specialist Rachel Koffsky.
Arriving in Paris at age 16, Louis Vuitton became an apprentice to a box manufacturer. In his early 30s he designed a flat-topped trunk that could be stacked - a radical innovation, as hitherto trunks had featured curved lids.
Hired as the personal box-maker and packer to Eugenie, Empress of France, Vuitton became the travel goods manufacturer of choice among the aristocracy.

I was told that it sold at a Christie's Auction. There is a matching regular trunk but it resides in the top of a barn beside the mother of all hornets nests. lol sorry. @@TheChetOne

@@BillyOfTea If you would be able to get some photos of it, I might be interested in buying it! :)
I like this production 👍
This is Amazing 😎
My father work trunk making bt this type is so good I wanna make this type 🙏
Very cool.
The problem with antiques nowadays if they are “not designer” then there aren’t antiques. This is what pisses me off, a lot of great antiques out there without the Brsnd name recognized today yet not accepted by Christie’s or other auctions places

Which is even weirder because the brands are even older then Louis Vuitton which is crazy
❤️
Can u still buy these?
Very conservative… Not the time influences those trunks, but these trunks set the travelling times and pacing tempo.
Yowza first yeah!
Do they still make them and sell??

no, todays designer are too lazy and making ugly products, I have old antique suitcase from my dad and they're far more better than today's LV (mostly)
Interesting I wished you showed the trunks in detail instead of just opening them for 2-3 seconds
incredible part of Western History, this is one of the innovations that brought the world together.

Lack of good explanations!
Alright but why an ironing board trunk? How about you iron everything before you leave?

These trunks were made in an era where only the top 1% travelled and when they did they went on tours that lasted months or even years. Often these trips were to places that were considered "exotic" and had little, if any, of the conveniences they are used to at home. Therefore they brought everything, including servants, with them and you can imagine why these people would require trunks that have a desk, bed, or ironing board.

@@jieluo347 This makes lot of sense. Thank you.
Airtight!?
It's a shame the Louis Vuitton products these days still draw the same price, but have none of the quality.

Everything these days is all garbage made in China.

To be fair LV is still making these by hand in France using highly trained artisans. Their vinyl/plastic bags that all the hype beasts carry around are trash though.
