My roommate first year in the dorms at Berklee in 96. He was in a practice room 6 hours a day, every day. Super talented, and one of the most humble and genuine guys you’ll ever meet.
This man plays the saxophone exactly how he talks

Thank you, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I really appreciate it!!
The eBay Meyer is the best of the three. I think that it is just the right amount of dark.

I thought exactly the same thing. His personal one is plenty dark for my taste (almost a classical sound) where the eBay purchase had a little more sting to the sound when he pushed it. But ya gotta play what you hear in your head, not what other people like!
Love this dude. I am from Philly and have been listening to Mr. Shaw totally obsessed with his sound and style. Love this guy.
Absolutely LOVE these saxophonist interviews. I learn so much from them everytime. You are a fantastic interviewer because you are a great listener, you are a passionate fan like the rest of us and you know when to get out of the way and let the interviewee talk, share and express themselves. Awesome job Jay! Thanks for all your other great videos too.
Man it's good to listen to experienced players with years of knowledge. You hear it in their voice just as well as you do in their playing. It's the little things that go unnoticed that take their notes to the next level. I sometimes listen to recordings of Ben Webster, Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt and you can actually hear them take a breathe or hear a key being pressed. I may never reach their level of playing ability but for me it's so enjoyable just trying. Being able to play your instrument the way you want is magical and enables you to leave your listeners spellbound. We're still under the spell of the likes of Coltrane, Miles, Dizzy, Monk, etc. Thanks Jay for another excellent video.
Yep, the new NY Meyer sounds the best to me too. I've played Meyer on alto for 30 yrs. Great channel J
This was fun! Thanks Jay.

Wow Jaleel Shaw!
Great interview! He plays beautifully. I had no idea a mouthpiece could change the sound so much. I am a new beginner alto sax player, had to learn to read music as well as learning the sax. And I am "72" yrs young! Jay you are great! Thank you!

A mpc doesn’t really change your sound; it facilitates your sound. So much of our sound is ‘built in’ to our body, and, while there are minor differences at the beginning, ultimately the mouthpiece conforms to your sound.
Honestly the vintage Meyer just takes the cake between all of the mouthpieces best played. It felt so warm and full and made listening to it a complete joy. Loved the video jay 💚

What blows me away, is how much I learn by watching these KZread videos. Everytime I finish one...I feel like I just spent months in isolation is the Himalayas, studying the very subject matter. I'm just pissed I didn't find Jay years ago...
That was great.
I've been following Jaleel for a while now, we use the same repair tech and he told me to check out Jaleel. He's an amazing player. I love these interviews, I would love to see longer more in-depth interviews like this. More please!
I learn so much from these interviews. Thank you and keep up the good work you are doing for us! Take care and be well, Big T
man keep doing what you do, I appreciate what you are doing for the sax community
Jaleel is amazing. Thanks for bringing this conversation forward.
I have never heard reasoning for recording yourself explained better than this ever, thank you!
Great interview - but too short. I could listen to Mr Shaw's wisdom all day (but then I wouldn't get any practice in would i?) :D

Awesome Video! I’ve known Jaleel forever …A great human and musician. He gave up info so much in this video…Great Stuff!!
I think that this is the best interview that you have ever done. Incredible wisdom shared and insight. Thank you!
This is such a great video. I learnt so much from this video, longtone practice, mouthpiece selection, transcribing, recording your practice. Using etudes. Thank you for these great videos Jay.
I love Jaleel's tone - easily one of my favorite current players.
Hey Jay, I was just about to send a comment saying that I couldn’t hear what was being said because of the heater, then I thought, well I’ll persevere for a bit. Then about 10 seconds after I carried on listening to the video you turned the heater off. Glad I carried on listening. Thanks.
I loved this video Jay. These advices are so true and useful. Finally, this great player recomend to do basis exrcices lije longtones, play what we ear, ...etc. I really liked this interview.. Thanks for all Jay.
I've been playing for many years but it has been a repetition of a year's work. This interview has been just what I needed to progress, transcribing and recording which I knew about but left in the distant past.. Thanks for posting.
Jay - these one-on-one interviews you're doing are insanely insightful and remarkably interesting. Thanks
Wonderful interview with a wonderful musician. Thank you so much. I am in agreement about the mouthpiece being so important ... it's the sound generator ... the source! On alto I play on a modern Meyer that was refaced by Phil-Tone. Best alto piece I ever had and affordable. I bought it used from PM Woodwinds. Thanks again for the interview and the words of wisdom.

Phil does great work.
Jay, i like what you are doing for us in the sax world. I have learned more in the last few months than I have in a long time, and I have had a long time.Mahalo
A wonderful interview with two sax players both of whom have a Philosophy of music and a deep understanding of the broad spectrum of the art of playing . Really good to watch and there is a lot to learn from hearing a master expressing his ideas and technique. Thank you . . . . More please.
Another cracking interview, Jay. Always great to listen to the masters share their experiences and wisdom. Also, seeing two people sitting in a room talking and sharing sax experiences takes me back to the world we are currently being denied. Just glad I'm isolated with my Aristocrat; and family of course!
Wow. I have a long way to go. On any given day my sound varies more than the difference among those mouthpieces. I guess I'm glad, because learning and improving are the most rewarding part (so far).
Great interview. You're videos have motivated me to pick up saxophone. Been playing for not too long, just picked up a better mouthpiece and I cannot believe how much of a difference it made.
Brought back painful memories of breaking my own NY Meyer 2yrs ago,. Ed Pillinger repaired it and it turned out better than it had been before.Great interview!
Great interview! I love his NY Meyer warm dark tone!
No doubt, the ebay Meyer mouthpiece was the best to my ears. Another great vid Jay! Thank you.
This is refreshing to watch. I had a smile on my face the entire time
Love the interviews! I like the vintage Meyer, then the new NY Meyer from ebay.
Awesome interview, Jay! Thank you
I love these videos. They should be longer!
More interviews!!! This is GREAT!
This was such a GREAT interview!
I love these interview videos!
Thanks, great lesson! Keep them coming please.
Definitely the original! Dan Berendt
I like the old one. I prefer the dark sound. Warm and loved.
Great knowledge and interview
Really interesting Interview! I really like those kind of videos.
Loving the content of this channel👍👍👍
I love these
What a player !!! There ought to be a college degree in sax players and their gear …. It is rocket science ! Please have more of these interviews of great players … Thank you 🙏
This was a brilliant interview. So much knowledge and wisdom. Great test. I thought the New Meyers were great. He sounded the same on them but the new one was fuller. Beautiful sound and the technique. My man Thank you
Thanks for mentioning you recorded this in February. I was feeling a bit stressed out about social distancing . Anyway, very interesting interview.
Excellent music experience.
Hi Jay great video keep them coming
Thank-you. Dan Berendt
Amazing brother!
Thank you for this!
Greeeeeeat interview!
The mouthpiece gets brighter in sound as he plays each one.
Glad I tuned in :)
I preferred the darker sound of his repaired Meyer. I had a stock Meyer 5 that I bought at the old Sax Shop in Evanston, Illinois 30 years ago. It’s worn out. Just replaced it with a Meyer G series 6 and I love it.
Great interview, thanks a lot,👍
My first sax comes this week and I’m coming straight your vids 😊😌

Start with scales before repertoire. Try improving over backing track eventually when you have the note under your fingers. Boost creativity
Thank you for sharing this. The original one sound great . I have a reg. Meyer 5m 😎🎶✌🏽
Jay if it is possible please interview Kaori Kobayashi. She is phenomenal. Wow! In love with her sound and style.
Wow, this is awesome, thanks Jaleel! To be honest, any mouthpiece he puts on, it's gonna be Jaleel Shaw, lol. It was interesting to hear the 3 though. The newer ebay one seemed to have a little more resonance than his original one. Well done!!
I've just stared im recording it sounding dark I need to breath and lips ectra loving it thanks guys
45 mins to short the interview, thanks for posting
Shaw is a cool guy and great musucian !
Great interview. I liked the eBay Meyer best. A bit warmer than his patched up original Meyer. I bought a Commemorative Meyer as well but don't think mine is as bright as the one on the video. Jaleel is such a great player and seems to be the kind of guy you could hang with and talk saxophone and music for hours.
Nice video, very informative
Great advice from a real pro. BTW, your pentatonic pattern course is great. Purchased it 2 years ago but had other material to master. Have used yours and also other's backing tracks in various keys. Also making some via Band in a Box. Learning to improv in the blues, I limited myself to start with several notes and moved up. Learned also from 2-5-1 standards that you can play the whole tune playing the pentatonic scale derived from the 5th note of the maj7 chord. Played over "Misty" with gm7/c7/fmaj7 on alto with derivations of C penta. Sounded great! Thanks!
This was great. I'm on the hunt for THE mpc for both my buescher (TENOR and Alto).
I prefer the Original (repaired) Meyer, seems a dark sound, these kind of sound is beautiful for me.
The USA Meyer is definitely brighter.
I’d have Jaleel get the vintage NY Meyer 3D scanned and send it off to Syos to print!
My Mark 6 tenor I found on the other side of the state of Idaho where my dad had grown up. I managed to get my dad to go into the music store and discovered that the owner was my Dad's music teacher from when he was in High School. After the visi I was a happy camper jeading home with a Mark 6 Tenore for a graduation present. Still playing on that beautiful horn and it is one of those Mark 6s that have been lovingly maintained and great repairmen have taken the time to do a great job. Enjoyed hearing this interviea. Thank you
This is great stuff Dick
New Meyer from EBay!!!
Great interview. On listening: yes! It would be a bit odd to learn a language but not listen to it spoken ...same goes.
The vintage meyer is mellower for sure, but if you like a brigher tone you'd go for the modern one. It all depends on what you want.
Of course Jaleel sounds great on all. But my first impression is that the Meyer from eBay is nice.
I have a Meyer 6M on my tenor; but on my alto, I'm using a Selmer C* S80 - for now.
I play a recent USA Meyer. It seems a lot darker than Jaleel’s but then again he can do a lot more with it
Wow nice talking ~~♡
very cool. THe guy says who are you listening to ? That's a big deal.
The. Original Meyer sounds like a smooth stone skipping over water with the skips of the stone hitting the and bouncing of the water is the articulation of notes and it nas the old and darker sound Basta👍🏾🙏🏾😉
Hello I just wanted to say I think the New York eBay mouthpiece found it vantastic I'd go with that one thank you for your time
The older mouthpiece sounds like a seasoned singer, where the age is obvious in their voice. The new one sounds like a younger singer with all the ranges. I prepare the older one
Your judgement for #2😊
The New York Meyer is a little brighter.
1) Ebay one 2) Generic one 3) Broken one
It's a great interview... I wish the original footage hadn't been so chopped up and edited though... just let it roll, he's a master speaking wise words.
They all have different sound. The original is dark sounding that he likes which is wonderful but I like the latter two and may the middle one the best.
The eBay meyer sounds the best to me. Secondly, I prefer the stock to his repaired one. It could be because the repair didn’t fully restore it to it’s original quality. Jaleel sounds incredible on all of them though
Thanks for sharing. Definitely, he got a good deal, but I believe 25 years ago $300 was $300 like not everyone had that money. of course, Comparing it with the overpriced Mark VI today, it's like buying a mouthpiece. Tip: Watch out for garage sales in your town, you might be surprised. True story. A friend of mine got one for around $1000, gave it an overhaul, and now he has an amazing $1750 mark VI from 1964. Some families dont even know what they have at home from dear grandpa ;)
I believe you are impacted in your playing by the music that you have heard. I see the same thing happening with my photography. I wonder what music did Charlie Parker and the other greats hear?
Love your vids jay! Also, i have a question, How do you get that exaggerated end of high notes that you hear in music? Thanks! :). EDIT: How do you get that buzzy tone when you play too? i’m using a rigotti gold jazz 3.5 strong with a yamaha yas 280

That’s part of developing your sound. If you like that quality listen to players who sound like that and emulate their sound as best you can by playing along with recordings. It takes years to develop that though.

Better Sax Alright, Thank you!
I need a saxophone badly
I know that preference is very personal but the Theo Wanne NY Bros is a very fine mouthpiece. I also suspect that they are much more consistent than old Meyers (which you don't know if someone has messed around with) and cheaper.
