Scotty do you believe it is liberal policies destroying car reliability? Seems they are always pushing more green ideas, diesels are junk now because of non stop emissions problems because liberals want 0 emissions, and pushing manufacturers to get almost impossible fuel mileage is making has cars less reliable. The word is that’s why toyota was forced to put a v6 in the tundra because of liberal government regulations.

I had no heat in my Celica after changing the thermostat. I think all that I needed to do was run the car for an hour with the cap off the antifreeze reservoir and/or radiator. There must have been a bubble near the interior radiator inside the cabin that supplies heat to the fans in the cabin. Leaving the caps off and letting the car get up to temp some how pushed the bubble out and I got heat again. The mechanic didn't even charge me to fix it. He said he took the cap off and let it run.

This is why I like my 04 Celica. Beyond the tech involved with VVTL-i, it's a very simple car inside and out. Easy to fix, because it's not overdesigned and overly complex. Still gets me 36mpg on the freeway at 135K, and is absolutely fun to drive.

Remember, the Supra and MR2 were also killed off immediately before and after the Celica. People wanting huge SUVs were the cause. The only thing "unreliable" was new/overzealous drivers, who misshifted the closely geared 6-speed and blew engines. Later years had steps to counter this, like wider shifter gate spacing and lower rev limiters. As long as you treated the engine nicely by maintaining it properly, it treated you fine in return.

During the pandemic people are home more and driving less. And there is a chip shortage the boats that bring in chips don't want to dock at certain places like the U.S. So the demand for computer chips has gone up however car manufacturers can't get the chips for vehicles so they have all these new cars but can't get chips for them. So newer cars are becoming more and more scarce. What a lot of people have taken to doing is buying older analog cars, until the cars dealers can get this computer chip mess sorted out.

Get an infrared thermometer and check the temperature of the radiator's inlet and outlet hoses after 10 miles of driving. It should read +150F. I suspect there is a malfunction of the sensor and/or valve that divert hot coolant from the engine to the heater's core located in the cabin. This pathway is closed if the user does not command HEAT.

Funny about the parking brake, or Emergency brake....Years ago I had a 1964 New Yorker Salon...When the car was in gear, the "Emergency" brake would not lock. You could use it just like a regular brake pedal. Then, when you put the car in park, it would function like a regular "Parking" brake...

You are unfortunately right, Scotty. Many CH-R owners in my country found out that this vehicle does not possess the usual toyota reliability. Indeed, many CHR had their engines damaged when the gasoline that was used was found to be contaminated with manganese. Interestingly, other cars with turbo engines were also damaged, for e.g. BMW, Mercedes etc. However, non turbo cars were much less affected.

Issue with #1 question is a hot/cold valve located in a engine bay and run by a motor or a wire . In summer when you use AC it turns heat off so no hot antifreeze runs into a cabin heat radiator. In winter it runs hot antifreeze into a cabin radiator. This is nothing to do with a thermostat. Even an amateur mechanic can figure this out.

Sometimes when I have my car in the shop I go out on the floor and talk to the mechanics and ask them why they can't fix the car. They say it's hard to fix a car when it's engineered wrong in the first place. You see this with all brands, not just Toyota. Most modern cars are over-engineered to make more profit for the manufacturer and dealer. Some people use a car for transportation and they don't need all those "features" and "options" --- which are often not optional.
