A Rivalry of PURE HATRED... (The History Mississippi State vs Ole Miss aka The Egg Bowl)

Спорт

Every year it feels like the Egg Bowl has some type of wild ending. It is a rivalry game that truly means something to the fans and evokes pure hatred from the opposing sides. It's like the conflict you experience at your Thanksgiving table every year. This is the history of the Egg Bowl, this is the history of a rivalry full of pure hatred

This is true. And, frankly, I was glad to see it. Ten years ago it reached a level of toxicity that took the fun out of it for the more reasonable fans. I do think State hates OM more than OM hates State. But over the years there's been plenty of hate to go around. lol

Fitz was not giving the ole miss crowd the finger..... It has been perceived that way because Ole Miss was clearly targeting Fits and aiming to injure him and unfortunately succeeded in one of the worst ankle breaks ive ever seen.... All of that said, I was there at the game and witnessed the finger in real time. Fitz flipped a teammate off after a joke he made as he was being carted off the field with the previously mentioned broken ankle and fitz himself has confirmed that that finger was aimed at a teammate, not ole miss or their crowd. Besides, that game was played in Starkville.

@@johnfiveash9459 Its not so much economic factors within the state as it is the general population of the surrounding areas..... The entire state of MS is only about 3 million people and both Oxford and Starkville are in relatively rural areas making it harder for people to get to the games and find accommodations, etc. Also, Ole Miss and State's enrollments are significantly smaller than most other SEC schools with both having slightly less than 25k students. Despite all of that though, theres real passion for college football in MS... If Ole miss and state combined to be one huge SEC school they would almost certainly have a100k capacity stadium like some of the other SEC schools do to accommodate the fan support the two schools get combined.

The animosity started post civil war era. The scalawags from Jones County got the upper hand by not supporting the Confederate state whom were on the low end of economy when wealth was there and had to compete with slavery then on political struggle with the freedom for all. The reconstruction era brought into land granted institution the A&Ms for the sole purpose of elevating free African Americans but somehow the Bilbo crowd found the need to segregate not just the African American but the once labeled Burbons that still florished notibly the planters. They found a home in Starkville during the segregation and competition in athletics fueled the animosity between the planter and share croppers. The African Americans got caught up with an old White man's feud when they started being recruited at State in the late 1960s then Ole Miss 1970s. What started out as class envy later became inciting racial animosity in a contact sport and the worse was Jackie Sherrill.
