I do a lot of kayak striper trolling, so I know how complicated it gets haha. One time my friends and I towed 2 normal kayaks behind a hobie all trolling baits...I still think what you have going on is more impressive

+Nolan Minor If they allowed kayaks in the ducts, oh man I'd be on one all day. lol I'm a fan of trying new things. This was one of them. I had to tweak my wooden planar board several times before it planed out properly too.

Thank you FishAholic members & KZread . The Aquaduct is a special outpost of Californian diehard fisherman. Our inland fishery is in need of support. Just wishful thinking..... I liked the California Department of Fish and Game to bring back the Striper stamp, to collect $$ toward harboring/perpetuating the stripe bass game fish. I imagine so much revenue is generated from our hobby: with required fishing license, sale tax on tackle, provisioning on every trek....... chasing fish tails. Our fisherman support the economy of California by always gearing up, & deserves a decent fishery. The California Aquaduct needs to be recognized, as a serious recreational game fishing venue.

+Pisal Sang As it's popularity grows, the state's going to have to accept the fact that the aqueduct system is a great recreational location as well. It's the only one of it's kind in California.

@@MengXyong ok i think i understand. You have a planar board tied to a spinning reel. And an umbrella rig on a bait caster, over the umbrella you have a release clip on a loop sliding on the umbrella line while the other end of the clip is holding on to the planar board line. Now to release the clip. Does the fish do that on a hit or do you set it yourself?

I would like more information on this setup.

We use umbrellas all the time for striper but why not just throw a rigs?

For me it's covering alot of water and quickly. It's a long canal and I have no idea where these fish are most of the time. Trolling an umbrella rig like this helps locate those active fish alot faster. I've tried casting A-Rigs before and they do work. I'm just not sure how the loud splashing from the rig hitting the water has scared away fish or attracted fish when I use it. Plus I get to troll out of sight if I want to target the shallow fish.

I've been wanting to throw an A-Rig out there, when I see them boiling. Trolling you can cover a lot of water, and catch them blind. Great concept.

+Robert Rodriguez Thanks! On one trip we actually tried casting A-Rigs but no takers. We threw on the U-Rig and we started hooking into stripers. Sneaking up on them without causing any splashes or loud boat going by definitely gives you a better advantage.

Hey, what is that twister thing called where you put the teaser lures on? I cannot seem to find the name.

I'm looking for good lure for stripers for aqueduct I have tried many and had no luck at all. Can you give me some tips or let me know what lures are good

Per Fish and Game, an umbrella rig can only be used with three lures and three hooks per line attached to one poll. One of the lures may have three hooks, but the others must be without. That's why companies are manufacturing the CA Rig. That only has three lures. Unless the Aqueduct is not considered "inland water"?

+Gabriel Lamas Trolling this planar board isn't easy. But if it was easy, everyone would do it right. You can't cast U-Rigs liket he one I'm using. It'll become a tangled mess the moment you cast it and it won't go far.

hmm fishaholics idk about that i think you are only allowed 3 hooks period in the water at once. so if you have one lure with 3 hooks treble or single thats all you can have on the line at a time per rod, two rod max but have to pay for 2nd rod license, in cali, at least where i live. so cal near castaic. so on a a rig or u rig. you can have as many baits in the water but only 3 can have a hook. nice trick to shore fish the a rig u rig.

Wait, I don’t get why you just don’t cast it in? Is it cause it’s too heavy or loud?

If you don't mind me asking where on the Aqueduct is this? I tried making it to the Striper Fishing Derby you hosted a couple months ago but was unable to attend due to work. I've been meaning to fish for stripers but only know of Los Banos. I've been to the Ducts as a child but never growing up. My dad tells me Lemoore but im still unable to find out. Hoping someone could give me advise where to start out or help me out.

+aDOMik1 Wish you could have made it to the Striper Tournament. We had a blast too. At the moment, you are better off fishing the north ducts (anything north of O'Neill Forebay). Most of the stripers have fatten up and are chasing alot of the bait fish. Use smaller lures to match the bait for more hookups. They're real picky about what they eat. Hope this helps.

+FishAholics I was hoping to stay somewhere between Lemoore and the Fresno area. i know both places have ducts, but i've never been. Only been to Lemoore about a decade ago. Currently in Visalia so a trip to San Luis is a reach.

+aDOMik1 If you go West on CA-198 until you hit the aqueduct, there's a checkgate about 2 miles south along the ducts that real popular. You can also try where the aqueduct intersects CA-145. Those two locations are the closest to your area. Hit em in the early morning or late evenings. Try matching the hatch with smaller lures as well. If one location doesn't produce, keep moving. I was using three hooks. There are 8 teasers and three swimbaits with hooks. In the video, one of the teasers is missing so something took it while I was trolling.

thanks man appreciate it. you hear anything good about quail lake? Or the oso outlet? its part of the aqueduct and we usually go fishing there with blood worms during the fall and winter. Is that normally a good time to striper fish?

I'm not too familiare with those two locations. Stripers will bite year round but fall and spring are great times to target them because they begin to fatten up and will be more active.

I have always wanted to use the Umbrella Rig but can you help a fellow angler out and probably the rest of us on here who may have the same question. According to Fish and Game and I'm sure this question has been beat up 1000 times over:2.00. Fishing Methods--General.(a) Except as otherwise authorized, all fish may be taken only by angling with one closely attended rod and line or one hand line with not more than three hooks nor more than three artificial lures (each lure may have three hooks attached) attached theretoSo the problem we all have with this is 3 artificial lures regardless of them having 3 hooks. Are we all correct is saying that DFG would frown on say 7 swim teasers with no hooks and only one swim with hook? would if I had 7 lures like you have with 3 of them with hooks the other 5 no hooks. Wouldn't that still not be within regulation if they only allow a total of 3 artificial lures? Can you point all of us in a place that helps understand DFG definition of 3 lures? I am counting 8 on your rig. even if you only had 1 treble hook on 1 lure or 3 of them with a J hook or 3 of them each having treble hooks. help! please!Nice catches by the way!

CA regulation only allows a rod to have no more than 3 baits with hooks. Each of those baits can have no more than 3 hooks each. A treble hook would be considered one hook. So in the video, I have three swimbaits with one hook each which is legal. Hope this helps.

It says it here, "not more than three hooks nor more than three artificial lures (each lure may have three hooks attached)." So you can have 100 artificial lures on but only three of those can have hooks. Each one of those artificial lures with hooks can have no more than 3 hook attached on each one.
