The fan blades do spin on the MD-80, they are just hidden behind what look like fan blades that are actually called guide vanes. They help direct air into the engine better.

Haha the flight attendant knew right away that you are an aviation enthusiast and was there for the MD80. Great video 😂👌

Looks pretty normal to me. You have to take into account reference frames. We usually have a fixed perspective of a plane taking off from the ground. The guy filming is also in a moving plane that is descending which probably exaggerated the other plane's climb. It's not uncommon for a plane to reach 1000+ feet 40 seconds to a minute after takeoff.

@@maxflight5009 You're right. It is probably a standard takeoff pitch, but you have to compromise it did seem quite steep, for example I have no idea what the noise footprint instructions are etc but he may have been taking off at 20 degrees for example.

@@sanspotter My bad Scott, what I meant to say was to fly the 80's one last time before they retire. The last time I flew the MD80s was way back in the 90's with Reno Air when they plied the skies over the West Coast.

Love nostalgia...reminds me of my first ever jet flight in 1971 from Sydney to Melbourne ( Australia) on a TAA DC 9 !! Sadly long gone from Australian skies but so similar in design both interior and exterior to the MD 80...and in those days when you checked in they asked " smoking or non smoking " !!! Great flight Scott..ah memories !! Well done as always mate !!

I feel ya Scott! I love the MD80 so much. Just like for you, it was this planes predecessor, the DC9 that introduced me to air travel. I saw these MD80's so much as a kid. Now I feel like a part of my childhood is going to the scrap heap. Hopefully I'll get on another Delta MD88 before they go! But when they all go, I will cry! No joke!

I used to hate these planes too. American would always use them on the ORD-PSP route when I was visiting my grandparents. Over the years it’s actually grown on me and it’s also a goodbye to this old livery.

Great video!! Love the mad dog, and this is a gr8 tribute to it. This was the first American AIRLINES (Was hired from Eagle) jet he was a pilot on, and it was also the first jet I ever flew-from STL-DFW! Cheers from just across the river in IL, Scott!

I loved flying MD-80 on USAir in the Mid 80s when I was in The Navy from Norfolk to Buffalo and back. My connections were either DCA, PHI or, PIT

I can so relate with your sentiments. Im on the West Coast of Australia and we have an abundance of Fokker 100 and 70's still travelling around our fine state. Got the chance this week to journey on one when it was scheduled for a 3 hr interstate hop. Built in 1993 and yes i sat in a rumble seat up the back also. Retro ride :)

Great job! Back in the 1980s and early 1990s, I flew on United, and I miss the DC-10 and the 727. At least Delta still flies the MD-90 and the Boeing 717, which started out life as the MD-95.

Thanks Ryan! Yeah, Delta does such a good job keeping its older aircraft up to modern standards. However, one of the neat things about these AA MD80’s was how “retro” they felt. Like stepping back in time 30 years...

I have fond memories of flying TWA's MD-80 in First Class years ago. It was similar to being in First Class on a 727, noticeably quieter up in the front! A nice aircraft but I will have to choose the 727 over it. Just too many great flights with incredible cabin service unlike today, unfortunately. Thanks for bringing back good memories. I flew one from DFW to STL on August 6th 2019 that was also being retired. The pilot made the announcement that this bird is being retired and that this will be its last flight, commercially speaking. There were AA crew members that came just for the last flight. It was pretty cool being on that flight watching history in the making..

Superb video!!

Hawaiian used to fly the MD80 interisland back in the 1980s to 1990. Loved those planes. They reversed later to the DC-9-50 which was smaller. Those were in service until 2001.

I am glad I got to fly on one in 2012 when US Airways/AA started to merge and I even saw the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner in Phoenix before I took off. 😊

Lol The last time I flew in the American MD-80 was like in 2015 from DFW to SJC. It is one of the legendary fleet, I’m a bit sad that it won’t be there anymore. Great content btw!!

Lucky sucker! Of course you’d snag one of the final Mad Dawg flights. Wish I had caught one of the last ones from my home base in ICT to DFW on retirement day. Last year, one of the ticket agents here told me, “When the Super 80s go, Wichita will be the last place it’ll leave from.” Turns out he was partially right!

I enjoyed the video. I will miss these old Mad Dogs. They were well Made.

My last ride in one was 7 years ago. N434AA, Seat 29F, SAN-DFW. The guy in the aisle seat was a big guy like myself, but the middle seat was open. We decided to use the middle seat's tray table for both of us and not need to cram our own tables down in front. LOL Your plane was delivered to TWA? So that aircraft has seen both of these airports a ton. And yes, I've seen STL during TWA days (1988 for me)... L-1011's, and basically anything powered by JT8D's all over the place. I flew a couple MD80's and a couple DC9-10's on that trip. The one DC9 still had 1969 stamped on the window.

Nice that you got to experience an empty middle seat on your final MD80 flight! And yeah...I couldn’t believe how desolate STL was. Such a shame considering what it used to be.

I've never really liked the MD-80s but you have to give them credit. They are a part of aviation history from now on. 😀

Agreed - they were an amazing asset for American Airlines!

What you were seeing in regards to “blade spin” are the Fixed Inlet Guide Vanes. They re-direct air to the N1 Fan (like every other jet engine) in this case. Because of the position of the engine and turbulence from airflow over the wing, these are necessary to create smooth air flow in to the engine. It can look strange from a side angle, but if looked at directly, you would definitely see a spin.

I will miss her... she was one of the most silent airplanes at the time and the remain commercial with stairs in the back... Many good and some bad memories on it. I flew that beauty mostly on MD-81/82/83 versions on many routes of AA but also with TW, DL, IB, AZ, SK, AM, OS, TW (TWA), SR (Swissair), JK (Spanair) Fairwell "Mad dog" MD-80

I rode on one RDU-DFW-RDU and saw to it that both legs were S80s so that I was sure to get one in as I got it on a few days prior to you as it was the only time I was going to get on one...the return flight had a broken generator (so we had to return) and we got a different S80 so I got 3 S80s for the price of 2 and it appears to me as if the one mentioned in this vlog is the one that had to return...there was a family in front of me that looked like a mom/dad/young adult son and the son was like me in wanting to be on the S80 before they retired...looking back I realized I got my S80 ride just in the knick of time...

Love the MD-80! It always seemed that the angle of climb was steeper than a typical 737 or Airbus A3whatever:), those engines were powerful pushers!

I'm glad I am not the only one to try to avoid them but then again got tired of them after flying them on Alaska so many times. Now I just want to be able to ride the 717 before they are retired since that is the only one of the series I have not flown. Should be easy except I don't get to fly much now with three teenagers in the house...

The last time I flew on an AA Super 80, I was flying from ORD to IAH. I will never forget it because the flight attendant wanted to argue with me about shutting off my iPod and wired headphones and I was not listening to crew instructions. I took them off for landing and I told her what about the guy with the Bose Wireless headphones, why does he get to keep his? She said those were for ear protection. Hence why my last ride on a Super 80. At least I'll have one more change with the MD-80s via Delta. They know how to treat a passenger.

Last flight from my home airport is tomorrow, I believe (9/5/19 OMA-DFW). After that it's all 737's and A319's on that route. They will still live on (for some time) via Delta and Delta Connection. - Red

I've been to Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport in years, I don't recognize the airport that much since was remodeled. I for one like the design of this aircraft even though I've not flown on one but I have flown on a Boeing 727-200 a few times, I liked the design of the Boeing 727-200 which I have quite a few in my diecast 1:200 scale collection & yes I've missed those too since airlines had retired then years ago.

Yes noisy in the back seats but years ago pre security issues I had a cockpit visit on an md 83 all you can here is the wind passing over the cockpit ..

I really liked this one. I'm not ashamed of being a nerd. Proud of it actually. We're into the coolest stuff. I think I flew on one of these two years ago Miami to Orlando through a cool storm. Was right after Hurricane Irma and American canceled my flight so I had to switch to delta and go to Orlando because no one was going to Tampa. My husband picked me up and I was able to go home after coming from Madrid. I'll never forget that. But yeah, sad to see this plane go. So cool of the flight attendant to say a few words. Yes the staff knows what this means for sure. Oh I also flew at the back in the tail because I wanted no one behind me. I didn't know I was giving up visibility.

I have never flown on AA, let alone their MD-80s, but I can see why some people hated them. Unlike Delta, AA didn't bother updating those interiors to at least match their other aircraft. Then again, given the reviews of their 737 MAX interiors, that might have been a blessing for you lol.

These MD80s (while old) were FAR better than the MAX aircraft. The good news is that AA is planning on making enhancements to the MAX fleet once they come back online.

You are from time to time shocking me. There was this person in first class with a fast food bag. this is a out of this world behaviour You are privileged to fly that old Lady. The MD-80 Aircraft was a crownjewel.. BUT to see STL so abandoned really hit my heart. T.W.A. had B-747, B-767 to HNL CDG FRA LGW there….and the L-1011....I do not fit into those U.S. flight Patterns anymore. Thank you so much for flying the last MD-80 operations and I do appreciate that you do appreciate the MD-80

@@sanspotter No worries. The md-80s use the JT8D low bypass turbofan engine. Different than the cf6s ran on 738 and a320, where the space between the compressor and outside cowling is wider allowing more air to bypass the compressor to propell the a/c

I flew in that airplane from San Antonio to Dallas it was the last week of that airplane

Never got a good chance to fly it, however I've been on the md 88 with delta dozens of times and the md 90 a couple of times

Those Delta birds won’t be around much longer, so get more flights on them while you can!

I flew on allegiant airlines md 80 or md 82 flight when I was 4 years old my grandmother has photos of the flight but she lives 12 hours away from us and when we tried to find it it may be deleted or just gone I hope I can find it soon!

I do like your idea of which plane got you into flying... for me, being born and kinda raised in Halifax, then grew up in Calgary, when we went back to visit, we would take Air Canada flight 110, 7 a.m. departure to Toronto on an L-1011, then a 727-200 from Toronto to Halifax. I flew a few times on AC 114, a 727-200 from Calgary to Halifax with a stop in Montreal... great memories of the old girls that earned their miles, unlike the airbus A-whatevers

There’s nothing quite like those old 727’s and L-1011’s. 😕 Today’s aircraft have no soul!

Thankfully Delta has plenty of Douglas Aircraft products for SANspotter to fly on for years to come. But no featuring of the DC power outlets? I’m saddened.

I flew in from Doha Qatar to DFW on that 16 hour, Qatar Airways A350-1000. Tired but exited knowing that I was scheduled to fly the MD80 on one of its final flights to Cleveland Ohio. Waiting to board, to find out that they switched the aircraft to an A321S. I will be honest, I was disappointed, knowing that they were going to be retied this week.

No way! 😕 I would have extremely disappointed as well. At least you you got the QR A350-1000 - I’ll bet that was a nice ride. 👍🏻

MD -80 was amazing flight to Puerto Rico airport I would never forget. And get up the good work bro✈✈✈🌎🌍😎😭😪💓

Overall Great video Scott However, I think it would’ve been nicer to have the takeoff not sped up as those engines truly are an icon.

One time while making a coast to coast trip I flew on American Airlines. The flight originated out of ORF and was destined to SEA with a stop in RIC and DFW. The entire trip (including the return) was on a MD-83. The flights to Seattle were nearly in clear skies. That's pretty unusual. The return legs however were a different story. On a much sadder note I use to work with a guy that was part of the first responding fire rescue teams to arrive at the crash site of Northwest Airlines Flight 255 (MD-82). I've driven through the intersection where it occurred (Middlebelt & I-94) many times. He shared some of his memories from that hellish ordeal. Not a pretty picture :-(

Fair play to the FA for getting in on the action at the end. Oh and in 36 years, if I’m still on this mortal planet, show me a 787 or A350 that’s still in service built in 2019. Yeh, didn’t think so.

I think you’re right! It’s highly unlikely aircraft built this year will be around in 36 years. Airplanes aren’t built like they used to be!
