A Review of Ancient Empires (Mod for Total War Attila)

Ойындар

Ancient Empires for Total War Attila is a Roman era mod that begins in 202BC right at the same time as the Battle of Zama between Rome and Hannibal of Carthage. Is it better than Rome 2? Let's find out.

    What do you all think of the Ancient Empires start date (202 BC)? I think it really differentiates this mod from other Roman period mods.

    I like the idea of the mod but I miss starting in the times of the marian reform and fighting with the classic legionaries. Now I probably never will play with them in campaign because of the turns requirement.

    I love it. I played vanilla Rome 1 and Rome 2 as well as various mods set around the vanilla start date that any variation on this is welcome. It makes Ancient Empires different from EB or DeI or RTR and all the others not just by being set in a different game engine, but also giving you a different starting situation.

    I like it but I would like the option to start in 280BC as well. At the beginning of the Phyrric wars. It is a good mod especially the logistic side of it (DEI has some logistics too and EB is introducing the field army script) which makes campaigning more akin to what probably was back in the day.

    Will we be seeing a let's play of this? Maybe something smaller in scope, like a Carthage campaign with the goal of retaking your lost possessions in the punic wars (and maybe destroy Rome...) or something like that would be fun, with some historical commentary on the punic wars or such. I tried AE a little when it was released but didn't really get into it then, has it changed/Improved much since? I will probably give it another try after this review. Great content as always!

  • @GudeaTW

    @GudeaTW

    3 жыл бұрын

    There are a few distinguishing factors - it has a 202 BC start date which changes the dynamic of the early campaign when compared to the standard 270 BC or thereabouts. I think the seasonal variation in the economy may be more pronounced in ancient empires. I think the Attila map is nicer and has a better mood of settlements and provinces than the Rome 2 map. Will be doing some videos on DeI as well eventually

  • @Heldermaior

    @Heldermaior

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@GudeaTW it is more pronounced because the impacts are larger. In DEI having a bad crop means some public order penalties and growth stops. In Attila it means your armies start to attrite like crazy and your war machine grinds to a halt. It is also possible to have some more extreme variations thanks to the climate change mechanic.

    @@MrAwrsomeness Have to agree with you there. Also, the battle map diversity is cut in half. Apparently every tree east of Athens is a palm tree for some reason. If you fight on the border of the steppe and desert in the far east you'll find that the devs never fixed it and a haunting void swallows up the earth your soldiers are standing on. Seeing my bactrian cavalry march through the tropical palm forests of afghanistan was just too much for me, especially since I love that region the most in ancient and medieval history.

    The performance issues other people are experiencing may be from using AMD CPUs. I played Attila on both an R5 2600 and R5 3600 and they both ran like stuttery trash even when it was supposedly over 70 fps. Went to an i7 9700k and it was a night and day difference. Now on a 10900k and it runs like a dream. Pre-Warhammer Total War games just can’t seem to run on Ryzen. Had the same problem with Shogun 2.

    i think the succesor states are allways getting their own category and their culture is allways hellenistic in contrast to the greek states which have the greek culture. this may be because of the successor kigdoms was dominated by greek but had also influences by the cultures this kingdoms had conquered. for example the ptolemaic kingdom was greek in essence but egypt culture intermixed with the greek and it was hellenised, therefore "hellenistic culture" instead of the more pure "greek culture" of the mainland states.

Its troops just stay put or wander around where they land over. They do not even try to engage my amies or capture the victory point. If I don't have enough troops to annilate the AI troops, the battle will be spending all the time doing nothing and getting a draw when time runs out. Great review, sadly you forgot to mention all the new Custom Settlements in the mod. This IMO the Best part of the Mod - for example Jerusalem or Carthige from the Rome 2 Demo are one of the best settlement siege maps. Friendly Advice - with this mod you dont need to play any of Rome 2. That Game is even today totaly broken and DEI is a totaly overrated mod compared with Ancient Empires for Attila. Rome 2 was never fixed nor will ever be both by Modders or CA.

    Hi Frozenmen, good point regarding the custom settlements! I will be doing more in depth videos about Ancient Empires (gameplay, faction info, etc) so they will be mentioned there.

    @@Frozenmenss1 Great - of course I will get to Medieval Kingdoms 1212 as well! I have tried Medieval Kingdoms, and while the units and pretty much everything looks great, I felt like the campaign wasn't quite ready for me to do a review with my full opinion. Perhaps I can do a preview sometime soon.

    It definitely has certain aspects that are better in my opinion (such as the campaign map). There are aspects of Rome 2 I prefer. They play differently imo.
