Using the 2nd heavy you can sweep down enemies almost 360 around you. I think it cleaves more enemies than the light attack. If you alternate light heavy you can yeet an enemy horde off to your left which makes them much more manageable than just beating left and right and potentially spreading the horde. Like a snowplow, except for zombies.

Came here to say this too. Using the bleed build means you'll be staggering everything in the horde, i mean everything, and have an almost constant 60%damage resistance up while your doing it. You can solo control any horde and keep all of the heat off your team while they do their thing. The shield is an insanely useful tool.

In addition to bleed,stagger, and good use of the 2nd heavy to sweep everything around you, my favorite crowd control combo is light > heavy > repeat but spin 360 while dodge sliding, pair that with replenish toughness on chained hit and you have an infinite cc whirlwind

yeah, been playing game for a little with friends and some games with randoms. Using: - Best Form of Defence - Blood and Thunder - Bloodthirst with shield and just spam heavy attacks while looking around to hit everything around. Usually my teammates focus on elites and specials, while ignoring the trash melee and basic shooters. So i figured - it's my job to clear them then. The problems i encountered while playing: 1. teammates dont finish off trash mobs. They swing weapons, especially zealots with hammers, throw away trash and walk past them. So mobs get up and hit us from the back. Psykers with AoE staffs are guilty of this too. 2. it's hard to hide from shooters as ogryn. And you get shot a lot while dealing with horde. So i take 25% toughness replenish when hit 3 enemies with heavy attack (which i constantly do). I apply bleed to them, which makes it more likely for trash mobs to die and not get back up and hit us from back. I get up to 60% dmg resistance which helps tanking some ranged shots. And i staggering elites, letting my teammates to kill them easier. And if i'm in a pickle situation with some nasty enemies like flamers or snipers which i cant get with shield - i just whip out my Krourk heavy stubber and kill everything on my screen

Cleaver/Club Ogryn here. This guide was so good I'm considering dusting off my shield and giving it a go again. I absolutely hate clueless shield ogryns so I really hope more people watch this video. Cheers!

Excellent guide! I recently got a really nicely rolled slab shield myself and basically said "well... I'm not sure when I'd use it given the stigma about them, but maybe good to have one day" - but your guide covers exactly how to use them both as a defensive/offensive option quite nicely!

I really wish I could charge with it out, so I could rapidly dash and and smash a gunner's face in without getting my toughness annihilated.

I found a good way to run the slab sometimes is to do the bleed build with it, the best combo for bleed with it is do light 3 times then h2 then repeat. That sheild sweep will smack basicly everything around you and you will kill half of them as they stand back up with your lights. Plus the bleed damage is nice against any target

Push attack having surprisingly high damage is what I was missing. It was infuriating having to throw single enemies around for 10 seconds to kill them and move on. When I started using the head-bonk, it all clicked for me. Thank you again for this guide. EDIT: Oh, I just realised why I missed it - weapon details don't list push attack stats. How I never noticed that?

I find Hugging the wall while using the shield helps to keep shooters in one general direction-- you can plant the shield once you've gotten enough attention. I run the 2 burst shot ripper gun, helps to quick kill shooters or elites that are close but not in bash-face range. One tiny use case of the shield is if there a shooter mob killing one of your downed teammates, you can plant your shield infront of them and hopefully another guy comes to res the downed, though that takes 3 players and happens super rarely. I've run the blood and thunder and the blood dmg resistance perk, not killing the horde that quickly ironically helps you tank longer.

Nice guide, but for me personally, the shield feels too clunky. Especially when there is a cleaver III, sparkling stick or funny clubs. Yes, the shooters are your biggest problem, but nothing a Ripper MK V gun can't handle. With Can opener, I can kill crushers in 6-9 shots. Other weapons are just more fun

That's fair, I usually pick other melee weapons when playing as an Ogryn myself for the same reasons. I probably wouldn't have touched the Shield (let alone made a guide for one) if it wasn't for the fact that my viewers voted for me to make a guide on it after I made one for Helbore Lasguns. Still, I'm glad that I stuck to it and discovered a fresh way to play as an Ogryn. Gives me a bit more variety for everyday heretic smashing!

so something you can do with the new update with the feat that taunts on block, is if you block the normal gunners ranged attack with the shield they will pull out a melee weapon and charge you with it

Bulwarks on the other hand can sprint at full speed with their guard up, without using any stamina and can tank gunfire forever

Havent watched the entire thing yet, but know that shooters always prioritise players who first move out of cover - use the shield as a way to draw gunfire so your teammates can finish them off.

- I didn't really like how much of the screen is taken up and blocked when you have a shield but I got a mod running now that you can customize your gear looks and while i think it only looks that way to me it let me pick smaller looking shield models that just don't seem as cumbersome when wandering around.

I like the barony music in the background lol

You totally should. The amount of content online regarding that game is criminally low

The biggest weakness with the Rumbler (besides ammo efficiency without a Veteran) is the hit box seems to be much bigger than the projectile itself when it comes to the environment. Shots that should easily clear a railing or corner or arc perfectly under the ceiling seem to "reach out" and slap that mortar off course, and it's a huge pain in the ass! That said, it's definitely my favorite weapon on the big boy.

I would definitely swap out Hard as Nails on row 20 for Die Hard as it's less situational and unlike Lynchpin (on row 5) Die hard applies to all toughness regen including feats, kills, coherency and blessings. Couple with 2 health and 1 stamina curio so you have more health left when Die Hard activates and more stamina for push attacks and blocking range fire. Go triple stamina regen and toughness regen on curio perks if possible. Swap Payback on row 25 for Raging Bull as it applies a damage buff to all 4 (max cap) enemies hit on next attack but gains stacks from the amount of enemies staggered not just damaged from previous attack. Lets say you stagger 8 or 10 enemies, that's a extra 20% or 25% damage to your next attack. Really helps with clearing horde so you don't have to entirely rely on your ranged weapon and you don't have to rely on being hit first for the damage buff from Payback. I use the MK II ripper gun with brittleness on special for the reason you mentioned but I just find it more reliable to delete horde quickly when I need to with left clicks and I can swap between melee and ranged quickly without having to reload between shots unlike some weapons. 2nd heavy does have infinite stagger cleave so worth throwing one in after 1st and 3rd light attacks here and there, plus gives raging bull more stacks. My main combos: Horde - lights attacks with 2nd heavy thrown in occasionally mid tier enemies - Push attack light light or just push attacks Heavy opponents like ogryns, maulers, ragers - heavy 1 over and over, ranged stab and shoot when safe to do so. I always go confident strike blessing with all Ogryn melee but for shield I couple it with Skullcrusher as you mentioned.

This is an awesome comment. Looks like I'll be going back to Raging Bull on most of my builds, I had no clue that it works that way as Ogryn's my least played class and I haven't tested every feat that he has access to. I also really like the idea of making a build based around Die Hard and Health curios. I'll have to do some grinding in my spare time to give it a try. Thank you.

@@XrayWasTaken I use raging bull for shield, cleaver and shovel because they are either lower stagger weapons and/or the heavy attacks aren't nearly as much damage compared to the bully clubs and power maul when powered up, which I use knock em' down beat 'em up for because you can get high stacks quickly giving you up to 50% more damage on your next heavy attack. The power maul especially can build 25 stacks instantly with a powered up light attack in the middle of a horde or knocking an ogryn down a couple times..

@@torm0 I have a build dedicated specifically for utilising the Knock 'em down stacks with a Kickback and a Mk I Brunt Club. Haven't tried it with a Power Maul yet.

I like the shield, the best defense is a good offense and vice versa

It would be a lot easier to use the Slab Shield if the Ogryn player was able to maintain better situational awareness while planting the shield. Such as, switching to third person while anchored or providing greater range of freelook to being able to look around and assess what is happening.

I usually play shield ogryn with the rumbler. And mostly treat my shield as a secondary weapon. But shiwld rumbler good combo

Although I wouldn't neccesarily say that I "main" Ogryn, I do have more time on my slab than any other class. Until I hit heresy I ran with the Slab Shield and Grenade Gauntlet as my brain was firmly in Bardin mode...and whilst there are a number of situations where CC is incredibly valuable and a slab shield does provide a handy mobile strongpoint, if I absolutely need CC now I run a Power Mail and Gauntlet over the shield. The lack of damage outweighs the stagger you can inflict - IMO - and although there are situations where a lack of CC causes issues, most of the time it's not required. Agreed on the Gauntlet blessings and it's purposes......being able to debuff mobs helps tremendously.

If i'm taking the shield then I'm not going in to kill but to disrupt, control, and hold the enemy back where, hopefully, my team takes care of the bigger threats. If the enemy is on the ground, they're not attacking. If I lock down an entrance then it's one less direction my team has to worry about and more of the enemy will be funneled to where my team's guns are concentrated. With the Slab Shield, i'm riot control.

I guess this is old because heavy attacks do a lot more damage now

I made this guide before the class rework has come out, so quite a bit of it is outdated, yes. The slab shield is actually a good weapon now and pairing it with heavy attack talents as well as bleeds and the bottom left keystone for extra attack speed makes it shred hordes and create an insane amount of space during big fights.

Been using the slab since the release of darktide, by far my favorite Ogryn weapon even pre-rework, used to be a lot better with the bleed + bleeding dmg resistance talents since the things you hit wouldnt really die giving you 60% dmg reduction + 20% from the passive. That build is still nice but the small stuff now takes a hit or two less and bleeds to death pretty fast, used to make you basically invincible.

Best thing to do to massively increase the effectiveness of the shield for your team: Move... wait for it... towards the enemy while blocking. Don't just sit there, move. Your entire purpose as an Ogryn with a shield is to turn yourself from a bullet sponge into a movable iron wall. Not moving removes about 50% of the reason to take the shield in the first place. The other 50% is made of equal parts the shield bash which trivializes every enemy if you are able to get it off and the brace which lets your team get free deamonhost kills as long as they are ready and you are the one that pulls. Also yeah, I saw some "private only" penances and was shocked to find out you can't even make a private lobby of just yourself... like come on at least let players start a "private" lobby that they can choose to let other players join (yeah I know, not technically private but their previous game you could just play alone with bots if you wanted to and you simply cannot do that in this game unless nobody joins your public lobby game in progress which even in the game's semi-dying state is rare). The single greatest thing that could happen to the shield is if they added a special bull rush interaction that let you brace then bull rush to infinitely block AND close on the things that forced you to use the brace in the first place. That would probably somehow make it OP in the tryhard's eyes though.

tbh, i think the biggest issue is other people not knowing how to play with shield ogryns. common sense doesn’t seem to be something this player-base generally has lol so many people seem to think it’s a good idea to run out in the middle of a horde instead of defending a choke point, or actually using a shield ogryn as cover when it’s available. often times i see non-ogryn players running out in front of the shield in order to shoot stuff, only to die, when they could have easily just peeked out to shoot and gotten the same thing done safely. it honestly seems like you only get maybe 1/10 teams that are actually good now, in terms of communication and skill. i don’t expect people to know everything, but on heresy+, you should know the basics of the game and how to position properly for the most part.

I tried Ogryn after maxing out my Veteran and it felt miserable. Extremely slow, with low damage and low accuracy. Maybe its because I play with randoms, but "tanking" for my team felt useless and sometimes detrimental. It takes too much time to do it properly and randoms can't handle elites/specials and shooters anyway. I just get a lot of heat on me for no gain all while everyone else happily runs out of cover and in front of all enemies rendering my efforts useless. The worst part of it is, while playing as a vet I can just cleanse waves of trash all by myself via power sword and keep shooters down via suppression and infinite active ability. I can melt and CC elite/special enemies easily and with 0 setup/time required by just magdumping into them. Bolter might be slow, but its still feels faster than lugging the shield around as Ogryn. I basically end up benefitting my team both defensively and offensively easily, while putting way less of an effort and being way less of a nuisance. Really hope devs do a balance pass and just buff everything cause rn doing missions as anything but vet feels like a drag and a waste of time..

Any class not playing as a short king has problems with those waist-high cover boxes XD

all i want for bullgryns (that's what im calling shield ogryns because bullgryns o nthe tabletop and lore USE these shields), is to have an variant that removes the bunker special ability, for a MK1 power maul that i can instead power up like the one handed version why because out ogryn is out Foot Knight/Ironbreaker this time round and ffs I WANT MY AXE AND SHIELD BACK UMGI!

2 people join a pub group and do an anti social penance and don't tell you about it. Advice: Don't mess up their penance!

So, i take it the shield stats are not important, since nobody is talking about that in guides, or reddit spaces.

Not as much as on other weapons. Obviously it's great to have a 380 stat roll with an 80% roll on everything except for Defences (a.k.a. fancy Mobility), but considering that this weapon doesn't rely on Finesse / Stopping Power and that it's not really meant to do direct damage as it's primary role the stats on it aren't nearly as important as on something like a Combat Axe. Post Class Rebalance the majority of the damage you'll do with the shield comes from applying bleeds on heavy attacks anyway, so don't stress too much about high Damage and Penetration rolls. The only stat that I'd really pay attention to is Crowd Control, as it actually affects both your swing speed and stagger. If you can get 75% or higher on it then you shouldn't really have to worry about the rest outside of Blessings and Perks, which are fairly important.

This video should have a TL;DR version. Here it is: do NOT use the slab shield. You are hurting yourself and your team. You are better off with virtually any other melee weapon.

Use it all the time for fives with high intensity. You just need to pair it with a ripper. Gather up all the the mobs and just mow them down. Made you selling point for me is if someone has a sniper on them you can put your shield up on the teammate could be revived by someone else.

It's simply not true. It's a fine weapon, if a bit clunky. What hurts your team, is being PASSIVE in combat, and it's the only weapon in the game that allows that. If you play appropriately, it bring a lot of utility and a fine amount of damage to the team. And this guide will hopefully help more people get out of this mindset.

I mean it depends on how you use it. It’s really good for staggering and drawing fire so you’re teammates can kill shooters without being suppressed or worried about getting gunned down. The problem is that it engenders passivity(bloodborne shield description reference lol.) The people who just sit in doorways for an entire horde with the special are the problem. It’s a weapon worth using and viable, but people just don’t really know how to be effective and useful with it, like the guy in this video he showed a clip of just sitting there in special block again like 4 enemies lol.

I leveled ogre last and before I did I’d always sigh and feel down a teammate when I saw an ogrin with a shield. But then I started playing with a very good player who would sometimes bring shield and I saw how differently they played than all the other shield players I saw and they were very useful for the team and made my job as ranger so much easier, while they still were able to do well killing things themselves. It’s just one of those kinds of weapons in games that get a bad rap because of how clueless players use it. It’s viable and genuinely good to use. Just some people can’t be helped in games and are always gonna be a weight on the team no matter what they are doing. It’s just extra obvious when those types are using the shield lol. I’ve actually been complimented in damnation before when using shield. Some people have said that I was actually a useful shield user instead of the AFK in special shield users.

Put the penance in private games save the pugs couse ppl wipe all trying to do that useless penances
