A Re-Review of Sundered Two Years Later - STILL Not How to Make a Metroidvania

Ойындар

So I played Sundered again. And this time I beat it. This review is a little informal... but procedural metroidvanias are still not very good.

It feels like the design of the player character’s attacks/abilities and the design of the enemies came from two completely separate games. The combos and such feel like it was made for a more deliberate style of combat, but the enemies are designed to swarm/mob the player. It’s made worse by how some mob enemies for some reason have large health pools that conflict with the swarming concept. There are just too many contradictory design decisions packed into one game imho. I think it would have benefited from being less ambitious and having a more narrow focus. Epic boss battles, mob clearing power fantasy, deliberate combat, just focus on making one or two really good and you would have an awesome game.

There are games with good procedural generation, but it takes a lot of effort to actually make it look interesting. Minecraft and its clones are pretty good at creating interesting environments, for example, because they work by landscaping the area rather than putting elements together. I also quite like procedurally generated levels in StarCrawlers, probably due to high number of hand-made templates they use for procedural generation. But lazy procgen certainly does ruin the interest in exploration.

I enjoyed, throw the foes floating through the wall might not be a big deal, you just have to wait a moment for them come into the terrain, if there a lot of foes you can hit them, if there are few foes than they are not threatening, I also like the fact hitting foes gives you extra double jump and the themes of the game. It is worth playing if it is a bit strange in design.

I appreciate you coming back and play the game till the end, and have at least a more complete experience, since I stumbled upon the older video and all I could honestly think was "this dude played for 5 h and thinks that can say something interesting about Sundered?!?". While I agree that if you play a game for hours and you don't like it, that means that there's something wrong (happened to me with Chasm), I believe that when a game is as playable and artistically capturing like Sundered, you must at least spend more time playing it to really appreciate what it can offer. I disagree with what you complain about certain enemies' mechanics ruining the combat experience, or the "Diablo syndrome" as like repetitively going through areas in OVER AND OVER in other metroidvanias has ever be more enjoyable compared to Sundered (Metroid neither is immune to this in the later stages of the game). I also think that this might just be not your type of metroidvania game, rather than a not so good one, that you're a bit unfair in stressing much more what you disliked instead of pointing out the real strengths of the game, but at least now your opinion takes into consideration certain abilities and features that you complitely ignored in the older video, which really define and impact the game experience. Some of them you're still ignoring, like the fact that when you die you get to keep all the earned crystals/currency, which is a very forgiving and generous thing considering the difficulty of the game, or the fact that where the game lacks in terms of variations between rooms of the same world, it compensates with the variety of traps, obstacles, and monsters attacks and styles. Overall I also think that Sundered could use some improvements, specially in certain enemies/environment interactions' mechanics, but I disagree with the negative sides you pointed out being unfitting in a metroidvania, or making the game bad.

  • @theblackkoopa2329
    @theblackkoopa23294 жыл бұрын

Yeah, in my playthrough of Sundered I had many of the same complaints. To me, the procedural generation could be removed from the game and the exploration would be unaffected. It tries to mix rogue-lite gameplay with metroidvania exploration, which is interesting but neither genre is combined with the other enough to make a truly unique experience. Combat is decently fun if you're powerful enough, but in the midgame you aren't even close, which results in a lot of frustration, since deaths are as a result to quantity. Nothing wrong with horde fighting, but the devs should've seen that how Eshe fights won't work. Given the mobility of the enemies, she would really have benefited from a moveset more akin to, say, the mercenary from Risk of Rain where you have many s. The energy restriction on evasion moves was a bad choice too. I can't say I dislike Sundered though. I mean it's a deeply, fundamentally flawed game (especially in the mid-game) but it did keep me playing to the end. Obviously, if you have the money, buy another metroidvania, but I can't say the game isn't worth playing: just go in expecting to ask "what were they THINKING!?" AVGN style a whole bunch.

Hell yeah. I love this game very much -one of my favourites of recent years-, and, thus, I can agree with your review. Indeed, its more of an expirement that an actual game. If you look just at the gameplay, yeah, it kinda bland, repititive and survive one horde just to be overwhelmed by a next one, and so on and forth. Moreover, you double your sufferings if you restrict, for embracing provide a way more powerful upgrades, both for movement and to the combat system. Like, if you decide to be a chtonian abomination, you will be it, and you will feel your powers. On the other hand, staying a human means to feel all the pain and suffering of a lonely human being in this weird and strange realm. Outa curiousity, try beating this game on embrace path. That is where the true fun begins. Just to things to compare: Upgraded double jump gives you ability to soar until you face the land And the dash that helps you move throug water becomes an actual and well-controlled teleport which is a way more effective than the harpoon: you won't miss with it, you can comeback and you always know where you fly. You got the point, yeah? x3 Having only these two upgrades resulted the fact I used the harpoon only several times, and mostly dashed through air instead of jumping through enemies. Of course, this means another poor design decision: the game is made to be frustrating if you try to restrict, and more fun if you embrace. For what I praise Sundered is the atmosphere, the feeling of this good old Lovecraftian vibe which is created from the combination of the plot, setting, sound and design. As a strange but remarkable piece of art, its just great and you can enjoy its colossal landscapes in Cathedral territory, the bosses, all this staff. As a game - yes, it has some critical flaws that you pointed out in this re-review. Thank you for your work ^.^

@@justseffstuff3308 Extended commentary: Rewatching this video in 2021 I'm picking up notions of contradictory points and hypocrisy that I didn't see before. One of the largest points that he never addresses is how Sundered is not supposed to be like a normal Metroidvania, if this person is even aware about Lovecraftian mythology at all. The extreme difficulty curve is entirely intentional, which this person mistakes for objectively bad game design or anti-player actions; he never fully explores the combat mechanics or map design - only giving a boulderization of it. What the developers meant by "procedural generation" was that the game's central points/locations themselves are not altered, but the length & shape of the paths you take to GO there are. You can think of it as a mesh with different configuration options; this also fits with the game's lore as the place Eshe is in does not obey normal geometry/geology which this person of course completely ignores. He only sees one possible map configuration out of quite literally hundreds; if he had played the game multiple times then his point here would indeed be valid. It just seems like the RNG gave him a bad roll here, which severely impacted his perspective. An opinion set by a person who has only played a game for 5 hours compared to one that has achieved an ending (assuming you are not speedrunning and the game is long enough) is not valid because said opinions are rarely if ever based within fact in regards to the depth of the game experienced. It is very dishonest to do so - and while this person did beat the game - he still went for the hardest ending (Resist) first, instead of beginning at the easiest (Embrace) and working his way up from there. The difficulty options are another thing he never speaks about: surprisingly they have a massive impact on the game's feel and the combat system, which for people like this person would be a massive benefit. He continuously ignores environmental mechanics within the gameplay yet bashes the game anyway because it's something he himself does not like. Just because you do not like it, again, does not make the game OBJECTIVELY bad. Now for the combat system. I get really fed up with people who think that it's just "spam a button to win" in the face of the Horde mechanic existing. That's NOT how you are supposed to fight those swarms, and the game hints at this multiple times. Furthermore the combo system is similar to DMC; yes, you can win by spamming basic attacks however it is far more efficient to create combos/corner enemies into a wall/throw them to the ground/et cetera. There's FAR more you can do in regards to crowd control, but this person does not know this because he never stopped to (pardon me) read the fucking manual. Why do you think there's attacks which can pierce through platforms, reviewer? The only points I agree with him are how enemies can spawn in walls and seemingly come out of nowhere, and that some of the abilities don't really have any use. In a game that has a tiered ability system, that's typical design. Don't understand why he thinks it's exclusive to only this game. Overall this review gives me the impression of "not fully considering developer intent, refusal/unawareness to look through game documentation, disregarding the relationship between game mechanics and environment, disregarding context; most of all never fully utilizing the game's potential which was laid out for him" This review is dishonest, scummy, and full of confirmation bias.

Serrara Willow Mayfield - aka Fluttershy I think that there are places for games that aren't 'fun'. Horror is a good example. However, I think that limiting his review to 'the game isn't how he wants it to be' is reductive and honestly not even true. Running through procedurally generated maps, where you bust open the same vases and run down the same corridors might be 'meaningful' in a narrative sense, but it's not *interesting*. If a game wants to choose to not be fun, it has to at least be engaging, and getting annihilated because rnjesus decided to plop a bunch of goons with massive healthbars that you had no way to see coming in your face or place a bunch of robots in a random room that shoots lasers at you without any regard for walls isn't soul crushing and doesn't create a bleak tone. I don't think 'man, this world sure is a cold and lonely place' I think 'man, the designers of this game didn't think about the combat very much'. It would actually be much more miserable if things were more fair. I remember in my first playthrough of Hollow Knight, I gave up on the game for a few days, not because I felt like I had been cheated, but because I felt like I wasn't good enough. With sundered, the difficulty isn't earned. Enemies don't follow the same rules as you, and they just pile on in massive heaps, which just makes the game feel like a bad dnd campaign where the dm didn't think your combat encounter was hard enough so he just chucked a bunch of stuff in there. There are many games that craft narratives around losing and difficulty (especially rogue lites), but the things that make a good rogue lite satisfying (especially stuff like room upgrades, better equipment on consecutive runs, class unlocks) don't mesh well with a metroidvania style power system.

I played this game to completion, and I definitely will admit I only come back for the boss battles. Which, excluding Hysteria postgame, are amazing even after I fight them for the fourth or fifth times. I saw that in the review that you didn’t mention the revamped boss fights from the Eldritch Edition. Give all four of them a shot, they’re certainly doable on a “resist” play through and incredibly fun as well. Combat tips: up air attack is your friend, as well as one of the best repositioning tools in the game. Using the grapple and leading with an up air attack is the best way to stick to an airborne target. Remember that touching the ground is optional in combat. The charged up version is even better in terms of dps and with additional added height. Also use the gun mid-air. It’s absolutely busted against moving targets, and a good way to retreat from large crowds.

well to tell u, most of these cuts where there are dozens of enemies coming at u are taken from only a few specific locations in the game that are called "endless horde locations" in which the point in these locations is not to kill them but just to dodge these enemies and keep searching for the hidden perk (powerups) in that area, once u find the perk which is not hard to find, there will be a door next to it which u unlock and go out of the location immediately which will stop the enemies from coming at u. I played the game my first run on hard mode and didn't find it that difficult but it wasn't easy either, with the right perks and the right investment in skills tree the game scales pretty well and what was very hard is becoming manageable depending on ur skill and even the game itself is telling u in the tips during the loading screens that "end game enemies needs end game perks" despite that I played most of the game on rank 1 perks (60% of the game) and beaten it on rank 2 perks (max is rank 4 perks) and that's on hard mode in which enemies will take less damage from u and u will take more damage from them so on normal mode I guess rank 1 perks would be enough. All those who are talking about grinding gold from enemies to buy more upgrades, I didn't have to do that at all and I still beaten the game (96%) with only about 65% of the skill tree upgraded (excluding the branches which open up from resisting corruption), maybe that was because I played on hard mode that I had to kill more enemies and I got more gold eventually but still, normal mode would be easier, so it doesn't need the extra gold I got from playing on hard. but what is rly lacking in this game is the explanation of some of it's mechanics, there are many things that I didn't know about except after finishing the game and read online about it and some that I test it in game to know what it does, some of these things I genuinely wanted to do if I knew about it while playing, but still I enjoyed the game so much and the most thing I liked is the bosses and their gigantic design. Sry this end up being an essay even I couldn't discuss some amazing points about the game because u haven't played it yet but maybe this will convince u to give the game a try at least.

They just want more of the same old. I do wish they would make a new game improving on this one though, because there is room for improvements in the combat and progression side. Definitely a great and simple PoE-2D.

@@InkBleedsDeeper To me this game felt like the same old mediocre procedurally generated game. We don't want the same old again and again, and implying that metroidvania fans don't like change is absurd. Hollow Knight changed up the genre massively, doing almost everything right, and the community loved it not only because of how incredible every aspect of it was, but also because of how many genre conventions it changed up. Sundered was the opposite of a breath of fresh air, and it ends up being kind of like Dead Cells but inferior in every way except visual design. I just can't think of a compelling reason to keep playing; if you want a great roguelike you've got tons of choices, and if you want a great metroidvania you've also got plenty to choose from. But to play this game is a bizarre decision when you could pick up FTL, Isaac, Hollow Knight, Metroid Prime, Dead Cells, Nuclear Throne, or even linear platformers with interesting worlds e.g. Cave Story or Ori and the Blind Forest.

A few days ago i watched a streamer played this game. It was also around the time one of my favorite MMO which is Getamped 2 closed. So I thought that maybe I should give this game a try. Being experienced in beat 'em up genre gave me a solid foundation to play this game as well as experience from watching someone played first I was able to know which direction I should take on progressing my build. Knowing that I should try to explore first before decide to power through a specific area. Also since my other game experiences I have face far tougher enemies in number, I don't mind having a horde swarm me at all. And after I beat the game first on normal resist path, I feel this game enjoyable. The control is quite smooth in my opinion. As soon as i get uses to it, I find it fun to blaze through areas exploring. Of course it still uncomfortable for me to use grappling hook sometimes, but I didn't find the game is far less enjoy able without embracing. I do agree that navigation is a bit of trouble. Sometimes I ended up going to a wrong direction, get into dead end, or have to constantly looking at the map while busying fend of mob and moving at the same time. But those are just minor inconvenience to me and over time it becomes minimal. Of course because of the nature of being sour before sweet, I understand why some people turn away when it's get bumpy. But to be fair, this is a kind of game which intimate new players, but as soon as you understand it well enough, it becomes cheese able. At first I went for offensive upgrade to finish off the fight quickly. Luckily, somehow the skill tree compensate enough defense along the way so I was able to use offense as the best defense. Then later I found that upgrade starting to get expensive. Thankfully I took the hint that luck is underrated along with unlocking all abilities reaveal the importance treasure revealing skill. I went all in on luck and treasure find and was able to get all the level up i need several times faster than when i started the game. The grind doesn't feel tedious at all since it only takes me a couple of half hours to maxed out everything. I took advice that shield is the best defense and went all in on shield late game. This make me become nearly invincible to the point that I destroy the final boss without even try. Also, the music in this game in my taste are very blend in with the evironment. Many people may think it wasn't so good because music should stand out. But I enjoy it in a strange way. Because it blend in, I can play with or without it and doesn't have to mute them at all. Sometimes i pull out collection of epic battle theme and boom! I just got myself some instance baddass moments. I still haven't experience all the path along with finishing a co-op campaign on empracing route. So I may come back to update my comment someday. Overall 8/10: this game maybe not for everyone. But if you don't mind it's flaw, you will properly find it very enjoyable.

It’s a puzzle in the second area which involves gongs and Shriekers.

I gave it the benefit of the doubt, and put the stupid book down after the second chapter. Some genuinely good projects have terrible openings you need to get past, yes, but just like a bad ending can ruin an otherwise good experience for someone, so too can a bad beginning.

Firstly, your reason why the grappling hook is terrible is not a very valid reason as by changing the direction in which you move in while you grapple helps you select which thing to grapple onto.Secondly, there are multiple ways to clear out enemies that happen to retreat into the walls eg. corrupted cannon and finishers. You could argue that finishers don't reach very far into the walls then why not use the cannon? Finally, there is actually a lot to explore in the map, from unlocking new attacks to solving puzzles to be rewarded with a mask that provides you a special discount or immunity. I hope all of this will finally change your mind that Sundered is in fact not bad at all and that you will try the game again to unlock everything I have mentioned. P.S Have you actually beaten the game?have you defeated the secret boss? Have you used the perk from the secret boss to get all T4 perks? Have you collected all 3 masks and the hidden attack?

Well, I got Sundered for free on the Epic Store and since then, I've put in a little over 15 hours into the game and 100% completed it on Normal Difficulty. I agree with you about the procedurally generated rooms. Because the rooms are procedurally generated, they lack the polish other metroidvanias possess with their hand-crafted locations. Where most Metroidvanias are packed with hidden treasures, unique monsters, secret rooms, innovative puzzles and just a lot more, Sundered feels wanting. They do exist in this game but they are very few and far between (such as the colored wire puzzle or the hidden wall with the elder shard fragment behind it). Generally though, the most exciting thing you'll ever find in Sundered is the occasional 'fake wall' that has the same kind of treasure thing you've been seeing all game hiding behind it. And don't get me wrong, that's perfectly fine but it's about as much as they can do with the way the world is built but at the end of the day, it can get pretty repetitive. My other major issue (which is more problematic early game than late game) are the occasional hoards. Depending on your location, some hoards are just plain horrible compared to others. Having over half a dozen robot sentries laser beam you from off-screen is bad enough, but clearing them out only to have them ultimately come right back immediately in the same place the moment the area you just cleared is off-screen again (because you had to chase down other off-screen laser bots) is just poor design. Add in the fact that some of these hoards are seemingly endless, lasting literal minutes of constantly spawning enemies that just never stop, forcing you to either fight a battle of attrition in the hope that eventually the spawns will end, dying or running to a completely different area to force end the hoard, it can become extremely frustrating. At the end of the day though, I still have to give Sundered a positive rating and can easily recommend it to any metroidvania fan. While I admit that the enemy hoards are bad early, they only really impacted my game negatively in just a few choice locations and only really fairly early in the game. IE: Within the first few hours of play. Most of the locations weren't too bad and were actually quite fun to deal with. Being forced to make that hard decision to stop fighting and start running is a situation most Metroidvanias don't present to the player and it can actually feel pretty rewarding to escape a hoard that would have otherwise overrun you. You always have a sense of progression because death doesn't really have any real negative consequences. The biggest consequence of dying in Sundered is getting a free teleport back to the beginning where you can spend all of your intact currency to make yourself more powerful and having to deal with a slightly altered room layout to get back to where you were. So, when you die, you just spend your points, buy some upgrades and head back just a bit stronger than you were. The run back can get pretty tiresome if you are on a dying streak, especially since the general direction is always the same but the path will always be slightly altered, but this shouldn't be a problem most of the time for the average player. That brings us to character upgrades. I actually really like how improving your character works in this game. At the start, you can map out and plan your character's path to focus on the attributes you care most about. You want to hit harder, focus on the damage and critical hit nodes. You want to be more durable? Focus on health, shield and armor. Map out your path so you can get to the large nodes for those big boosts. It's pretty interesting and while I don't think it's truly innovative by any stretch, there's a certain appeal to it over say, Symphony of the Night's generic leveling. Also, being able to corrupt your key abilities you find throughout the game with the Elder Shards you find by defeating bosses adds a level of control to developing your character as well. You really like your air dash? Corrupt it and now you have a multi-directional air teleport. Completely optional yet unique that I don't believe I've seen in other games of the genre. There's also the perks that you find throughout the game that can dramatically change your playstyle. Being able to equip several of them can result in some interesting combinations and unique builds that further caters to an individual's preferences. But where the game truly shines is with it's bosses. The general combat is approachable enough for the usual Metroidvania fan but the bosses are actually extremely well done and impressive. While Sundered might lack the polish other Metroidvanias have in the exploration department with it's procedurally generated map, it easily holds it's own with the boss fights against pretty much any Metroidvania out there. Some of these fights are no joke and honestly, even on Normal difficulty, a casual player might find to be too punishing. However, I find this to be a delight as far too few Metroidvanias provide challenging fights. The first time you come across a real boss in Sundered, you know you're in for a fight and it gives the player a level of excitement as they rise to the challenge. Also, some of these fights will be easier or harder depending on your build and it's up to you to find out what works best for you. For example, in the video the grappling hook is refrerenced that makes some of the final bosses irritating. I can't help but think if corrupting the grappling hook wouldn't have made those fights less frustrating and more enjoyable. TLDR: The game has it's flaws (procedurally generated maps and endless hoards of enemies, some of which attack you from off-screen) but the game has it's perks (the way you improve your character, optional 'corrupting' of key abilities for unique powers, incredible boss fights). As a whole, I'd give this game a 7.5/10. There are definitely better Metroidvanias. Hollow Knight, Axiom Verge and Bloodstained are three that quickly come to mind, all of which are better. However, if you are a fan of the genre, this is IMO a solid game worth checking out. Get it when it's on sale and cheap (or free).

Hi. I just bought it on Switch (on sale, after see various reviews like that), with what seems a third of the game completed (the first area cleared) and I enjoying it very much as an action game or hack & slash. At this point I don't care about the metroidvania factor. It bores me to revisit the map for little more than 100%. What interests me is the gameplay. And as an action arcade game where the enemies can come to you at any time and not in the same place, I really like it. Any scenario is good for fighting and some give it a challange. And the variety in the enemies offers enough variety of threats. In addition, the movement is fluid. Not only because of how the protagonist moves, but because of the scenarios. Although the mapping is random, the sectors are recognizable and you don't stop. On the other hand, as you advance, you see key areas (bosses, mini-bosses, shortcuts, skill zone, ...) that then appear on the map to go for them again as in any game, you don't have to go crazy going around to lead you back to your goal. Finally, the difficulty seems very fair to me. I start on Hard at first and with only 2 rounds I already had the balanced character. And those 2 rounds weren't short. It doesn't seem like a roguelite that punishes as much at the beginning as I have been listening, far from it. As a exenple, it's much better than Rogue Legacy on this point. I highly recomend the game for anyone who wants and action and fluid game and doesn't care the metroidvania point or even dislike it. Cheers.

I’ve played and Platinum’d Sundered and I can’t say that I disagree with a lot of what you said about it. But I enjoyed the mobs since it made me feel like a badass one man army. But there definitely is far too many enemy types that can flat out ignore the terrain. Burning shards was a thing at launch and plays an important part in getting to the FINAL final boss and getting the good ending. Speaking of bosses I absolutely HATED the absurdly huge bosses that pull the camera back so far and clutter the screen with so much that it becomes difficult to see. I believe this combined with the lack of variety in primary weapons (literally just 1) are the sour notes for me. While the environments did become predictable, it didn’t bother me too much because the traversal abilities made speeding through them somewhat entertaining especially when trying to outrun a horde like something out of Indiana Jones. It definitely shouldn’t have been procedurally generated. As someone like yourself who’s built a channel around sharing your opinion and love for metroidvanias (among other things) I’m surprised you didn’t cover mummy demastered and I wonder how you will view the newest entry in this beloved genre in blasphemous. The thing that makes Dead Cells work and Sundered not is that the former isn't trying to be metroidvania. There are a few permanent upgrades that affect future runs, but Enter The Gungeon has that too and nobody is calling THAT a metroidvania. If you really want to get down to brass tacks, Dead Cells works because it's a sidescrolling brawler with randomized level layouts and unlockable gear and upgrades. Sundered doesn't work because procedural generation completely negates all the benefits of being an MV and the combat is poorly designed. Sundered was just a bad idea for a game and it makes me feel sad whenever I see it because they clearly put a lot of effort into the visuals, ui and animations. But it's not fun to play and that's what matters most. It's a very beautiful mess.

It is interesting that you went back and didn't change your opinion. I agree with all the things you said, except for maybe some of the comments about the worldbuilding and the swarming enemies. To me the combat felt like an evolution of the beat em up. Something like DMC, but in 2d, the dodge gives you IE frames and you can jump off of hits like in the messenger, those two mechanics made the combat feel fast paced and fun to me. It was important to focus on the enemies instead of yourself so that you could attempt to dodge all of the attacks. I would say that metroidvanias are one of my favorite types of games, and its interesting that I loved this game, but you didn't speaks volumes to the genres variety. I enjoy metroidvanias with good combat, bosses and upgrades, and the world design doesn't matter all that much to me (to an extent). In any case, im glad that you went back to try to finish this game, I think you would have had more fun with the embrace path tbh, but that doesn't matter now. Keep up the good work! I've 100%:d Sundered, and I still agree with many of your points, especially the bit about the minimap being more important than the main screen. At some point you just remember the layouts so well that you can navigate them without looking, and know where caches can spawn. The one exception to that are the endless horde rooms in the cathedral area that you showcased, because you can easily fall down or become cornered there by enemy attacks and environmental hazards. And the kind of a panicked scramble that situation invokes is probably what the developers wanted to accomplish. As much as I enjoyed it, it definitely isn't for everyone. Also, while you can technically explore the areas out of order, the difficulty of the enemies and the way you unlock the other two areas clearly establish the intended path. A missed opportunity. And now for something completely different: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i6Kpp9iegM_eh6w.html

it bothered me that the game insisted on "your progression should be non-linear" when there's clearly a linear main path designed, and any attempts to go out of that path result in a million locked doors, that you can only unlock after going back to the main linear path. it's non-linear in the way that you can beat the bosses in any order and you can technically do the last two regions in any order, but the gameplay encourages and rewards linearity. it's ok to be semi-linear, just don't say you're non-linear (?

Nice game during corona. Startet the game first on hard difficulty and it took me completely blind around 30 hours to beat the game 100% including all eradicator bosses. The start is very intense but at some point you are catching up pretty fast. Of all Bosses Dominion with Eradicator was my personal nemesis in this game - took me around 4 hours trial and error with pure melee build. Never tried eradicator bosses on insane difficulty.

Picked it up for like $4-6 on a ps sale and I've got 5-8hrs on it and overall its been pretty fun, especially with the added co-op. Granted ive only played co op a few times, its still challenging and really relies on everyone being somewhat good at evasion because you all share that same health bar, withseparate shields at least. I do absolutely feel the repetitiveness and annoyance of having to track back all the way back from right before unlocking a shortcut or gaining a new ability because of some wack creature spawn and cramped map location/design of the room you're in. It sucks. But the eldritch art and flow of combat when you're in the grove slaying creatures left and right focusing on both crowd control and dodging bullets is pretty satisfying especially with another player or two chaining attacks with you. All i can say is it was worth the few dollars

I actually pretty strongly disagree with your initial premise that how long you played a game doesn't matter. With most games I would agree this is usually correct however there are quite a few games, such as pony island, which massively change later on. Sure for games similar to the witness or some FPSs where their gameplay changes little it might be fair to say any amount of time is enough but if you dont experience the fullness of something and then say its bad or good thats questionable. I would agree if your opinion was that peoples judgements should be respected if they are ONLY talking about the time they played then their opinion based on that time is totaly valid. But if someone plays a game for 30 minutes or gets stuck on the cup-head tutorial for 5 hours I think its pretty unfair to the game to say however much they play they have a valid opinion

You could take just about anything to that level of extreme and it would sound bad. But that's the reason I mentioned that the CONTEXT of that time is important, so you can weigh that context against your personal values to help make your judgment. The core of my argument is that you should be enjoying your time with a game, and if a game becomes unenjoyable enough to cause someone to quit (regardless of how much the game changes X amount of time afterwards), then that's a completely valid response worth sharing _with context_. I'm not saying the time spent doesn't matter, I'm saying it matters a LOT and that the time spent should be made apparent.

Never picked the game on steam because of your first review, the points you leave on that video were more than enough for me and we did share the same view on tha part. Now that the game was free on epic games, today in fact, after a few months of being free and because of the quarantine I did gave it a shot. Well, 1h in to the game and I uninstalled the game and ended up here on youtube looking for reviews to see what ppl think about the game and here we are. Didnt know you released another review but still, not a good metroidvania for me neither, and I love exploration and metroidvanias XD... those moments when you unlock a new gear to break doors, hook on stuff or whatever and you start thinking "woa... NOW I can do that thing to get that upgrade" and you start reexploring zones and discovering new ones. Sundered doesnt have that, I like those type of progression but on Sundered doesnt fit at all. And well after seeing the enemies and how they behave, its sad... enemies should move in the world, not above the world. That way the fighting feels really unfair and I usually like that kind of "need skill" style fight. On games like deadcells, being a roguelike, I dont care if the world is randomly generated, but the world itself is a big part of a metroidvania genere and there are things that are difficult to implement on the genere. And the enemies on Deadcells move on the world limits, if you see a hard enemy or a large enemy squad above you, then you can start thinking in strategies to fight. Oh and, to end this, the art style on Sundered, yes its beautiful but I dont know what it is but I dont like it, its like it doesn fit, animations are good and looks like its a painted/hand crafted style. Maybe is caused on the repetiveness of the levels. I saw a walkthrough too and in the end of the game it felt like he was playing the begining of the game.

I agree that those little rooms were boring, but I think that was also the point. You are chased by hordes, you cannot just memorize the map, but you have to stop and watch the map. That makes you panic and that was the main challenge in this game. I agree that controls could have been better. You ended up too many times doing what you didn't want to do. This was the problem towards the end when you had multiple skills, which were triggered in similar way than some other attacks. The hook was a problem, because it connected to wrong target. That was also meant to be so. There are parts where there are enemies just dropping because they are confusing your hook. You should use it only when you are close to the target. Choosing embrace over resist, makes this much easier.

Hi! thanks for giving another try to the game. You missed a lot of things again unfortuntely, or at least you didn't talked about it. This eldricht update adds 3 enigma zones and a new boss, which give significant boosts ( 20%sales in the skill tree). You also get a talent which allow you to obtain rank 4 talents and makes the game harder. You didn't notice that the AI have changed for flying ennemies: now if they are not attacking, they're getting closer to you , which correct that out of bound ennemies flaw you were mentionning. Also, those projectile ennemies are easily countered by the upgrade which lets you destroy projectiles, and you obtain it in the same zone you encountedthose howling ennemies (the second one, because you get 2 piece of equipment which expand your skill tree to the said upgrade) Also the finisher moves are different because they have to be use in certain situation. Neutral air is not always the best choice Also, you seem to have not realise how those small upgrades (little triangles) are important and have lots of consequences. For example, the green ones give you armor, 1 point of armor is 2% of damage not taken (as said in loading screens) so they are important and not to ignore just to go to the big round upgrades. I havent heard anything on the talent system either, which drastically change your way of playing and make you take decisions to do synergies and counter the cons of them. For example, talents can make you generate a lot of money , so that farming ennemies or finding corrupted chests can be a lot quicker. the feel of loss and being overwhelmed is the true goal of the game. You can't compare this game to Hollow knight or Axiom verge, even if they are excellents, because they have a really classic approach of the genre. In Sundered, you're way freer, you can explore the 3 main zones without to kill the main bosses! so You are fully prepared when you face them. The exploration also feels waaaaay more rewarding that in HK (taking this example cause this was a hell of a good metroidvania so a good reference to compare with) since you collect more talents, money and 'since the update, unique and powerful upgrades thanks to the gongs mysteries. Also, i found the exploration really pleasant because since you clearly know were the main objectives are, you can choose to not go to them and to discover others zones! (where in other metroidvania, i got lost for hours...) The environment feels repetitive? There is 3 main zones divided in smaller parts with unique styles (in the first zone, there are the outside and lab) so they are things to watch. And in any metroid vania, once you entered and discover a zone, you stopped looking at it to focus on the game play because you assimilated the style. Only events or cinematics make you leave that state of concentration to observe the surroundings for their style. FYI the destruction of the shards was available 2 years ago, thats why you need to play the game a little more before posting a video which can be destructive for an independant game (you also could have contact the devs to avoid mistakes). Finally, and that my most important point, you really seem to have completly missed the beauty of this game for me: the principle of duality and choice. At any time in the game, you face choices to make, decisions to take. Fight or flee? Main boss or new zones? combat or utilitary talents? And finally : Embrace or resist. The all game tells you about the war between the valkiries, scientists in need for ressources and the eschatons, religious and lonely people who dont want to give what they have to help others, because thay want to privilege their god. By corrupting your abilities, you become a powerful dark being, extremely agile and polyvalent, excelling are fighting hordes but ultimately condamning the world by becoming the herald of a chaos god. On the other hand , by resisting the temptation, you become a strong fighter with a lot of damage but basic movement. A moral choice designs how you gonna play the game and which endings you gonna have: giving up humanity to get freedom, or giving up freedom to stay human and saves the damn world you wanted to return! Isn't that powerful and rare for a game? It's not a perfect game. The demonic air dash is to op, as the vampiring talent. You can get overwhelmed by info at your first playthroug if you're not patient enough. and the infinite hordeszones are sometime unfair. I dont think to precise that i just love this game, and seeing youtubers complain about it without having half of the info needed and thus risk to make a really bad press, especially to an indie game, it upsets me. That's why i wrote this comment. I'm french, so sorry in advance for the grammar mistakes. Hope you enjoyed reading it. Have a good day

I grabbed this game on sale and played with my boyfriend…god it’s a mess. The map is an unnecessary puzzle to navigate through for new players. Many abilities like the Airdash, Double Jump and Cannon should’ve been given to the player at the start of the game. With games like Dead Cells you get more ability choice from melee, traps&gadget to straight up magic. Here, I’m exploring this whole map just to be given these basic abilities…The upgrade tree is not linear which really hurt the progression- I felt like there wasn’t any power spike in the game, every upgrade feels insignificant. It was fun once you have your basic Double Jump/Cannon/Airdash, but before that it’s just so tedious. 2/5⭐️

It's completely valid to not finish a game because you DON'T LIKE IT, and still have an opinion on it. Anyone who insists that you need to finish a game before being able to make a judgement is a clown. Obviously you need to give a game its fair chance and try to understand what it is and how it's supposed to be played. But if a game is obviously failing to grab you even a few hours in, that's already a clear sign that it's either absolutely not your cup of tea - or maybe it's just not that good, and if the latter is the case, chances are you'll be able to clearly identify and communicate the flaws. It's also just video games. Very rarely does a game totally open up and completely flip the switch if you just stick with it long enough. Generally, what you see is what you get, it's not like a sophisticated piece of literature or complex music where you have to spend time with it to really "get" it.

I watched your reviews, I liked them. Never played the game but wanted to comment anyway like a viewer lol I thought the game sounds more like a rogue-like than a metrodvania, especially with the procedural dungeons, it removes exploration / backtracking and adds 'replayability'. I also thought that the horde mechanic should be a punishment for staying somewhere too long, like Personas Grim Reaper. "You stayed too long in one place and the enemies are closing in - Get Out!" which can add alot of suspense when done right, but you'd need some sort of gauge or timer when it rings or something. Or maybe instead of a horde, some sort of really powerful enemy that follows you until you get out the area.

Many hallways do look the same to me, and the grappling hook isn't as precise as I'd like it to be. With fewer enemies, I think it could work very well. However, as it currently stands, I try to avoid using it. I've also heard another reviewer mention a missed opportunity with the story. For example, having the character design change depending on the path you take. Your review is well-reasoned in my opinion.

I'm not dead yet Alright with that taken care of, I watched many of the streams associated with the footage-gathering portion of this video, and uh... yeah I wasn't wowed by the game upon watching. There was an instant where there was a drop-down platform, leading directly into just-out-of-sight spikes. This is what procedural generation does to games, and I will say this until the day I die: procedural generation, in long-form games, is a crutch used to avoid the difficulties and nuances of level design. Algorithms aren't creative, they just are, and you begin to notice that very quickly every time. I've seen procedural generation work in two spots: games with short core loops (usually a max of around 2 hours), and survival games. Everywhere else, no. It didn't work in Sundered, it didn't work in Chasm, it didn't work in Shadow Warrior 2, unless wilderness survival is baked into the core experience of the game or the game is very short it isn't going to pan out in your favor.

Just don't judge something based only on the footage of a gameplay if u haven't played the game yourself, it's not like sundered procedural generation is 100% random, there are rules set for each room to be generated based on, so this "just-out-of-sight spikes below a platform" will always be there waiting for u no matter how many times u procedurally regenerate that area, so your whole point is not valid and procedural generation in sundered is very minimal that for the first few hours of my gameplay I was like "why the hell are they lying that the map is procedurally generated." Actually, I'm not fond of procedural generation in games in general, that I hate rogue like games for this reason even being the closest genre for metroidvanias, the genre I love the most but I can say sundered procedural generation was well executed imo.

I agree with your opinions on the procedurally-generated nature of the game, but I think the issue with your review comes from looking at the game as solely a metroidvania. From that perspective, many design choices don't make sense. However, the procedurally-generated levels, lack of save points, return to the beginning of the game upon death, and emphasis on replayability and death as an opportunity for upgrades make the game much more reminiscent of the roguelike genre and games like Dead Cells. From that lens the game makes much more sense.

Personally, I enjoy the procedural generation in the game as I found Bloodstained: Ritusl of the Night's constant maps monotonous. Don't get me wrong, I loved Bloodstained, and I love Sundered. I feel like you went into this expecting it to be a carbon copy of other metroidvanias, or if not, maybe expecting it to be a Triple-A game like Bloodstained. I guess what I'm trying to say is there's a reason bigger games like Bloodstained are $60, and Sundered is just $20. Hell, I bought it on sale for $4, and I still think it's fully worth the $20 asking price. Also, I don't know how far you went with the perks, but the perks change gameplay quite a bit. I'm currently using a shield build on my embrace playthrough. I think I saw you fighting Eradicator Dominion, though, so I'd guess you looked quite a bit into that aspect.

KZreadrs don't really care how old a video is, we're always happy to see comments! And no, I wasn't expecting it to be triple-A. I've seen that argument before, people saying "Oh you only hate it because you were expecting triple-a quality" and like, no? Some of my favorite games are made by tiny indie teams or even solo developers, and plenty of indie titles have higher quality and tighter design than many AAA games, so I never understood that argument. Not expecting "a carbon copy of other metroidvanias" either, and I'm honestly not even sure what that's supposed to mean because lots of metroidvanias do things very differently from each other, but there is a set of core design principles to look at when I judge whether a game is a good example of that genre. I honestly found the world design incredibly boring, and the morphing labyrinths monotonous. I believe I mentioned in the video that when I explore worlds, I enjoy that feeling of becoming familiar with it and learning to navigate it freely, and that makes the backtracking feel interesting on its own because now I am getting to experience what was once oppressive and mysterious in a new way. There's stuff I could say about the perk system too, but this response is already long enough. Regardless, I'm happy you enjoyed it, as many other people have. Contrary to popular belief, most of us who speak negatively of something don't think badly of someone who enjoys the things we don't!

I was planning to thumb this up even though I disagreed with what you were saying. Though as you started to explain why I just come to realise you clearly didn't play for long. First off the hoards of enemies come in 2 forms. 1 a random hoard that stops after about 1min so kill them and you are done. The 2nd type is an endless mode. When you encounter and endless hoard that means there is a perk at the end of that block. You then talked about how flying enemies are unfair because they can go thougg walls and shoot through walls. Not to mention the way you were fighting was cleart wrong and you did not read the tips. Once you get double jump that is very very early into the game after you attack ANYTHING while in the air (including pots and everything else) you are able to jump again. This means you can jump forever as long as you have spmething to attack so dealing with these enemies is no issue. If they are behind a wall just move they follow you and it is extreamly easy to bring them to a place you can kill them. On top off all this if you actually took the time to look at the skill tree again you would find that extremely early on you can get a skill that makes your attacks destroy all projectiles. So your complaints about it being a bullet hell is pretty miss leading as all you need to do is spam attack and you will basiacly never get hit by a projectile. You theb complain about not every enemy dropping currency. Only normal enemies don't drop currency every time. Again there is a perk you get at the start of the game that makes normal enemies drop more currency. In the 2nd area there is a zone that has endless hoards. Guess what... use the perk that makes normal enemies drop more currency along with other perks that give more currency and you get a shit load. You can literally face a wall attack for ever and get a shit load of money. With just the perk that gives normal enemies more drops and farming you can easily get 10k currency in 5min.

Well, now I played for 30 minutes, I died once, I bought a couple random things in the skill tree, I closed the game, and after thinking about it for five minutes, I decided to try to get a refund. It just completely failed to capture my interest in any way. Maybe I'd get why people like it in another hour or two, but honestly, I would rather just play something else that I find appealing from the begining.
