Lovely DAW hardcover set, they are super-rare over here, well done Matt! Loved seeing 'The Best of C L Moore' too- you'll love her, I think. I've been after that one, but again, that entire series are scarce in the UK. She's more primitive that Leigh B, but I reckon you'll dig here. Great video, my friend!

Wonderful haul Matt. I'd have needed a trailer if I'd had the opportunity to go to such a sale. Love anthologies and you managed to pick up some gems - particularly the DAW ones - they are gorgeous! Well done sir!

Thanks! I left so much there I’d love to have bought but I don’t have the space, (already so much in storage). I’m very much looking forward to next year though, as this is an annual event! I’m still shocked I aquired nearly the entire Daw set!

Those World's Best SF anthologies are beautiful. Unbelievable hardcover haul. Mostly anthologies! I've concentrated primarily on collections but I'm realizing that anthologies are great for tracking and understanding SF history and/or themes within SF. Well done!

I'm actually always reluctant to read an anthology. I'd always rather read a novel or collection of stories by one person. But anthologies have more than once introduced me to new authors. And as you say they can be quite insightful with regards to SF history. I prefer anthologies with themes, like David Hartwells Hard SF or Space Opera focused collections. But I'm also a collector, and so the Daw hardcovers have always appealed to me. I feel like i cheated this time though, I only have two or so I need to track down now. There were literally two shelves of hardcover anthologies at this sale, I passed many by as I just don't have the space at the moment.

Lol. I actually gasped twice: when I saw Anthony Boucher's Treasury of Science-Fiction (historic anthology, I had one but lost it) and when I saw The Best Of C.L. Moore (this Best of Series has the best covers, and the best stories!). Nice going, Matt. Thanks for sharing the passion..

I gasped about every 45 seconds for the 30 minutes i was there! I've never found so many books I've been on the lookout for, in such a short period of time. The Daw books were the first thing i saw. And instantly I was looking under tables for an empty box. 5 minutes later I was in need of another box. The Boucher book and the C L Moore collection are among my favorite finds for this haul. And I agree the cover at for the Best Of series is great. I have several now and kind of want to collect them all!

I really appreciate your holding up the table of contents pages. It’s what I always want to see, and I would be scanning when I found anthologies myself. A quick screen hold and a magnifying glass is all I need! Also delighted to see Asimov’s Extraterrestrial Civilizations. I still display my hardcover book club copy on my shelves!

I think in the future I'll start showing a screenshot of the table of contents while I discuss the book. Much less haphazard that way! I kind of didn't notice at the time that for some books i only read some of the contents off, without showing them. I'm looking forward to the "Extraterrestrial Civilizations"! Very cool looking book and topic that i haven't seen mentioned before.

Great haul, i had to interrupt some shelving operations to watch! Wow those Aldiss hardcovers are awesome! There's one more to get i think. Space Opera was coined originally as a pejorative term, referring to really pulpy stuff from the early days. I'm brewing a video on the definition and history of space opera. Coming soon!

Btw, Mindstar Rising is one of three books revolving around a character called Greg Mandel. They're a nearish future thing. They were the first books PFH wrote, pre Night's Dawn. I liked em a lot, and am (unsuccefully) hunting down the hardbacks, which i think are only available in the US editions.

I have A Quantum Murder, and sadly passed by The Nano Flower at this sale, thinking i already had it! The only Hamilton I've read is The Commonwealth Saga, one or two of the Void books and i forgot that i had read his recent collab with Gareth L Powell, "Light Chaser". He's someone I have to get back to again.

Fallen Dragon is a book I have recommended on many occasions for beginners of SF to start with Peter F Hamilton…His Commonwealth Saga, Night’s Dawn Trilogy and Void Trilogy are pretty ambitious for the beginner to intermediate level SF reader…Also Light Chaser which he co wrote with Gareth L Powell is also a good starting point as well… Greg Egan is the hardest of the hard SF authors and his book Schild’s Ladder is the hardest SF book I have personally read myself…I usually recommend people start up with reading his short stories first The Best of Greg Egan to get a feel for his writing style before they go into the heavy stuff…Although Permutation City would be okay to jump into with Egan…

I forgot I had actually read Light Chaser recently and enjoyed it. My introduction to Greg Egan was a couple short stories and a novella. Definitely the best way to give him a try for, as you say, his Sf is the Hardest of Hard. I'm looking forward to reading more of his novels but i know going in it'll be challenging at times.

One day, when your eyes start failing, like mine, you will regret getting rid of your larger text Trades and Hardcovers. No book collector ever thinks it will happen to them but it does. I know space is your reason but the Trades and Hardcovers will always have more value and last longer. Especially the hardbacks that are smyth-sewn. Enjoy your videos overall but every time I hear you say you're getting rid of a Trade or Hardcover for the cheaply made paperbacks I cringe. 🥴

Thats a good point and something I've never considered. The value has never much mattered to me, i just love old small paperbacks so much. But you've definitely given me reason to reconsider. At the very least i may start holding onto copies of favorites in hardcover for future re-reading purposes 👍
