Expand Your TBR! | A Science Fiction Bookshelf Tour

With the addition of a lot of books over the past year or so and the fact they're now alphabetized its time for a proper library tour of some vintage SF and some of the newer stuff I enjoy. This represents about 2/3rds of my collection, the rest being in storage at the moment.
*I pretty much start instantly with a mistake. Aldiss' Billion Year Spree is a history of the genre, not an anthology collection.
*And at one point I skip past an entire shelf with a lot of Charles Sheffield. Great author! Check him out!

Very fine collection! You have some fun times ahead reading all those excellent Science Fiction! At 42.15 I notice my favorite novel... "More than human" by Theodore Sturgeon. Sturgeon is best known for his wonderful short stories and I take every opportunity to recommend "More than human" to anyone who enjoys a finely written science fiction novel.

Edit as I watch the remainder of the video. Oh you will love Silverberg in the end. Anthropology, sociology, archeology, all in the future, underpin many of his stories. It took me a long time to get to him. Then I read a short story of his about humans exploring a planet and finding ruins of an ancient E.T. civilization.. I'm actually finishing his novel The Glass Tower almost as we speak. I strongly recommend it as a first Silverberg, as well as The Man In The Labyrinth. I did not enjoy Hawksbill Station. Found it boring or I didn't get it. So you can't really dismiss him based on one work alone. Robert Silverberg is officially one of the Grand Masters of Science-Fiction. Cheers!

Of the OG sci fi authors, to me, Silverberg is unmatched. I usually know when someone likes him, we probably like all the same stuff. You gotta read him more.

Clarke & Baxter collaborations should be on the Baxter shelf since it was he who wrote the books. Clarke was mostly there to juggle ideas with Baxter.

Thanks for the offer on Ringworld but I'll be looking for a clean copy, I just passed on a couple of beat up copies while in Arizona. Also, I found a 2nd MM paperback of Children of the Sky but it's not in the best condition, I'll show it off in my next video and I'll mail it to you if you want it. Great video, I like all the information and recommendations (Ship of Fools on my TBR).

Looking at my goodreads i actually only rated Ship of Fools a 3/5. Yet scenes from it cross my mind from time to time so it definitely made an impression. I just remember it being very dark and claustrophobic with an interesting protagonist.

Wow! Thanks for doing this, loved it. It's funny to hear you say you're ditching hardbacks in favour of paperbacks. I'm heading in the opposite direction! I'm super jealous of your Perdido Street Station hb,, I'd love one of those. V pricy here too. You have a fabulous library Matt, may it continue to grow. ❤🚀📚 Jon

Thanks! I just prefer reading paperbacks, plus they take up less space. Though for some books, like favorites, i seek them out. Ideally, in the future, i'd prefer to only have hardcovers of favorites or books that are otherwise too hard to find in paperback. But thats my plan at the moment. A year from now I could completely change my mind lol. Your library is fabulous as well!

Can understand both of your approaches... Matt's to save space and be able to put more books on the shelves... Jon's approach because hardbacks often look very cool in a collection. I myself have made the same choice as Jon and mostly held on to the hardbacks over the paperbacks if I have / had them both

A while back, Baen published Anderson's Complete Technic Civilization. In the back is a chronology of the stories. I read Gary Gibson's space opera trilogy and really liked it! You're the only person I've seen that has the Trigon Disunity, I haven't read that in forever. What a great library!

after you talk about ship of fools I immediately bought it. Didn't even saw anything more.. Horror & Sci-Fi there isn't much out there.. do you have more recommendations for horror+sci fi? nice collection of books. Really good. I have more than 5000 novels all in all, I can understand your problem of limit space. But I bought those billys from IKEA and every shelf is double sided since the vast majority is either masspaperback or paperback. The hardcovers I have, not that many, around 150 or so is for more "favourite" novels and I Have in another shelf

I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels Ender's Game is just good but not great. My partner and I buddy read that & Speaker for the Dead earlier this year. I also loved Speaker. It was worlds more interesting. Your Cyberiad copy is just about as beat up as mine. I just finished Blood Music this morning. Great read. Way ahead of you about the October read. Also, I've been here since your first shelf tour and its wild seeing your DAW yellow spines all spread out. Thanks, always, for sharing. Considering you and I are probably close to the same age, i really appreciate your perspective on SF.

hey you guys, count me in! Ender's Game was all right, but it's really just a prologue. It's really the ending of the book that matters most, leading the reader into the awesomeness of Speaker For The Dead.

@@Seven-Planets-Sci-Fi-Tuber what i found most interesting about Speaker is the story line about potentially fitting 3 separate alien species on one planet and the characters considering the implications of that. Pretty cool sociological thought project there. & Ender's Game's ending certainly is what makes that such a stroke of genius. Served it up on a platter thematically.

Now I know why I was motivated to buy Queen City Jazz at a used book store last week...your previous video, even though I did not remember that when I bought the book. Perdido Street Station is one of my Top 10 books...how would Perdido compare to the two books by Tristan Palmgren? Because Quietus and Terminus are both discounted to $7.00 US and if you recommend them I will buy them next week. Your subtle SFF influencer career continues.

  • @sciencefictionreads

    @sciencefictionreads

Hmm. Honestly I don't think I can compare the two. Totally different type of story and atmosphere. Both have great characters and character development. Far less world building in the Palmgren books, but then they are mostly (but not entirely) based in real life (albeit the past) Italy. Quietus just blew me away with the genre blending story telling. Starts out pretty low key with a troubled monk in his very small, personal world and expands to something far more vast. The other storyline concerns an anthropologist from another world and is equally compelling.
