A rare 17th-century Japanese porcelain plate that appears quite modern

Every once in a while you have the good fortune to happen upon a piece that appears at first glance to be modern but is, in fact, ancient. This 17th-century Japanese porcelain plate is one of those rare finds. Combining the techniques of ko-sometsuke with polychrome decoration in the kakiemon style, the scene depicts a deer frolicking in a field. The delicacy of the decoration lends to it a lightness, adding a touch of whimsical charm to this precious piece of porcelain. Available from Visage Gallery.
