We make SPDs (lightning arrestors) and use a few different voltages of 35mm MOVs. One of them turns on (1mA) at around 480V DC. These are TMOVs with the third leg. Yes, the internal connection is supposed to open (melt ?) when it gets too hot but we also add a thermal switch which was needed in order to pass the UL standard for these devices. Here is what can happen when the protection needs a wee bit more work... Current is "limited" to 10,000 amps by the test facility..... (they can do 1000VDC at 100K amps.) These SPDs work fine in 20,000+ amp lightning test simulations... kzread.info/dash/bejne/q3eZj8dyoZjKZco.html

Wow that IS impressive, Thanks for sharing. If OK with you, I can print the link to your video at the comments section of my Varistor video. If fine with you, please write down a short description of what is shown.

This is a link to our SPDs to start with... www.midnitesolar.com/products.php?menuItem=products&productCat_ID=23&productCatName=Surge%20Protection%20Devices The original SPDs were good for 115K amps but the newer ones are less because we do not use as many MOVs now and that is because we had to add the thermal limiting.... The SPD is offered in three different voltages to maximize the required protection level. Protection is achieved by reducing the clamping voltage to a safe level that your system can sustain without damaging any electronics in the system. The MNSPD is designed to clamp a 115,000 amp surge! Blue LED’s provide visual indication of operation from a distance. This video shows why we started making SPDs in our industry in the first place with a high current test done by World Products corporation that is another supplier of MOVs... kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJ-ZqLuueNuwn7g.html

For 220-240VAC -- Should I use a 431 or 471 volt MOV? What would be the difference in leakage current at 240VAC?

Not all MOVs are born equal. You neet to look at the datasheets.

La difficulté pour moi comme bcp d'autres personnes comme moi, nous ne pouvons pas suivre les tutos parce que nous ne comprenons pas tout simplement la langue. Le point de vue est difficile à exprimer. 😮
