{839} Why MOV metal oxide Varistor or vdr voltage dependent resistor, voltage arrester or tvs transient voltage suppressor (either unidirectional tvs or bidirectional tvs, class x or x-rated safety capacitor or class y capacitor is Not before Fuse, why mov varistor protection is connected after fuse.
because fuse is a "short circuit current" protection and it is connected in entrance the supply voltage. due to any abnormal spikes of voltage or frequency will make internal short circuit to the mov / tvs / transil / thyrector, which will cause to produce a short circuit link across the line input voltage terminals. in result the input fuse will blow away from the unwanted voltage strikes, so the circuit will become protected. in case high frequency spikes the x-rated capacitor will provide our desired short circuit link across the line input voltage terminals. in result the input fuse will blow away from the unwanted high frequency strikes, so the circuit will become safe.

    I connected a varistor accross L & N, initially it worked but when i came back after a few minutes the appliance was not working. Turns out there was 220v in both L & N which got solved after removing the vatistor. What could have happened?

    please check the output rectifier, and its snubber RC. or might be capacitor value is low value than the required capacitance, which may cause increase temperature due to more ripple current

    Completely logical to put the fuse first otherwise it would become dangerous and could create a fire since the only protection at this point would be the breaker in the mains panel.👍

    MOVs provide bidirectional clamping, they are not a polarized device. we can connect it in any direction
