Why Varistor Is Used?
A varistor (voltage-dependent resistor (VDR)) is a surge protecting electronic component with an electrical resistance that varies with the applied voltage. Varistors are used to protect a circuit from high voltage surges. When a high voltage surge is applied to a circuit, the outcome is usually catastrophic to the circuit.

    I have Categorically NEVER seen one of THOSE fitted INSIDE a PLUG!!! ...they need their own enclosure, precisely for when they do their job and Blow the Fuse because of a Surge (said sub-enclosure must be able to safely contain said 'BANG''

    I thought about this and the MOV really is it's own protection device. It is only for surge voltage and the mov has a very fast transient response time rather than steady state so as soon as the voltage event is over the MOV stops conducting. The fuse is there for over current events from the load it is feeding. But I'm with you on the thing inside a plug it's comical.

    They don't "Bang" like a fuse and if specified correctly for the level of transient they are used to protect against should survive indefinitely. They are specified by the energy in Joules they will dissipate in the very short-duration spike in voltage which causes them to conduct. Yes it seems a bit strange putting one inside a BS 1363 plug top and if the appliance needs it they're usually incorporated anyway, but if there's space and it doesn't affect dissipation of the MOV or creepage/clearances inside the plug top then I don't see a problem. It is also not accessible without the use of a tool per the regulations.

    How long can the varistor sustain full current flow? Is it milliseconds or seconds? Can they be used to feed power to a device and prevent low voltage operation? For example I want to prevent my RPi from coming on if the voltage is less than 5 volts. Thank you.

    I have never seen one inside a 🇬🇧 plug and there isn’t room for one = we have the cartridge fuse in the plug for protecting the wire from the plug to the appliance, I tend to find the MOV inside the appliance itself

    I have 2 makita chargers who do not charge/red-green light flashing. I measured 230+ volts over the varistors pins when plugged in. Can i assume the varistors are damaged? Regards

    Your explanation as far as the operation of an MOV is ok. But your explanation does not cover the practical side properly. All mov's come in various triggering voltage and current clamping ratings. To effectively use an mov for voltage surge and spike protection, a good quality fuse of the appropriate rating is the first requirement. The rating of this fuse is selected, based on the device it is powering. Once this fuse rating is selected, the mov clamping current rating is selected, to be at least 50% higher than the fuse current rating, so that it is capable of rupturing the fuse easily, without damaging itself. The voltage rating of the mov is selected depending on the maximum voltage that can be safely tolerated by the protected device. And finally, it is not recommended to install an mov inside a plug top, for physical safety reasons.

    MOV'S are usable for only a single surge. Therefore, not sure if using it across a switch is a viable idea...

    MOVs aren't single shot devices. Provided they are used within their specifications they should last indefinitely. Ideally it should be connected downstream of the fuse so it's protected by the fuse but that's not easy with the fuse carrier in a BS 1363 plug top.

    I have never seen anything other than a fuse in a standard three pins plug. Such standard plug is not design for adding a MOV with expose legs that can cause short circuit. Still such MOV connection does work as cheap improvised voltage surge protector to accelerate blowing of fuse as extra protection to electric appliances. This is especially essential in poor countries like India & Myanmar where power supply is very unstable. Also in region lacking of lightning strike protection that always burn entire building electronic devices during a thunder strike, such MOV can act as cheap improvised surge protector in extra protection. However its recommended to use standard surge protector install in circuit breaker board or wire extension for proper protection, which can be reset after get trigger to cut off power supply safely. Otherwise make sure the MOV is connected behind a fuse (not before) to prevent sustainable spike of current like short circuit during long voltage surge. If i remrmber correctly, in Three Phase power supply lines, when the bad grounding of a star connection is loose, the voltage between two lines (Live & Neutral) will swing from 220V to 440V burning all the electrical devices. I had such bad experience living in a backward country.
