I think the lack of melee combat was a narrative choice and not a running out of time issue . In both games I always felt like they wanted you to feel outnumbered and outmatched and well , like the 15 year old girl your playing as . So it makes sense to me that her combat heavily relies on sneaking and using your environment.

The same thing goes for the AI. You can design really realistic AI, then you find out it makes the game really tedious. A very difficult mode is fun for about 1 percent of people, so it's better to design slightly intelligent AI and let the enemies give up on searching for you for a soft reset, rather than restart all the time.

Something else I noticed and appreciated is how they use Amicia’s hair to reflect her loss and her diminishing sanity and grip on reality throughout the story. She starts out with her full braid as in the first game, then has the sides of her head shaved due to her injury. Then her braid is chopped off altogether, leaving her with only a tiny ponytail, mirroring how she has almost nothing left but is still hanging on to the hope she can save Hugo. Finally in the epilogue, her hair is completely short, symbolising how she has lost everything, but also that she has finally accepted the inevitable and let go, symbolising rebirth and regrowth. It’s subtle, but I really liked how they used that. :)

Bit late to the party on this video, but having just completed the game, one thing to mention on the epilogue teaser cutscene is that the Macula baby is in relatively modern times, as you can hear what sounds like more modern medical equipment. They could go for the influenza outbreak of the first world war where we'll play as new characters but will find these hints that Amicia left behind 600 odd years before. To note that the gap between the first Macula outbreak and the one we play in is roughly 800 years so another time jump of that level would make sense and would also open up a lot more gameplay avenues.

If there was to be a Third game, using the Modern Day Setting, I could see them doing a Sorta Assassins Greed type setup. Not the Animus I mean, but you play as Amecia in her time, traveling, looking for info, trying to do all she can for the next Carrier, so they don't end up like Hug or Basilius. Then, you cut to the Modern day, where a new character is retracing Amecia's steps, also trying to figure out how to deal with the Macula in their time, but even modern Medicine fails, so their only hope, is to follow a 600 year old trail, branching two different Ages, who deal with the same issue. How it would end, I don't know, but if the Modern setting is the next step, I would want them to Reference, if not directly, try to involve Amecia, cause she deserves to not just be forgotten or overlooked.

I imagine the next “Plague Tale” game will likely take place somewhere near modern times. I think this was Asobo saying don’t count this series out yet…. Just because our current duo’s story concluded. It actually really was a relief when I saw it because despite loving the story in these games I was also even more depressed thinking it would be the end of these games as well. Please do the full story commentary from start of Innocence to end of Requiem. I finished Requiem last night and was really hoping you test went in depth with the story like Cyberpunk or Death Stranding. I started Innocense shortly after release but only made it about halfway then stopped. Knowing Requiem was releasing in a week I went back and played through Innocense fully and started Reqiuem the day after I finished Innocense for the first time. I truly believed up until the dreamy sequence down in the nebula just before the end that she would be able to save Hugo. I only realized it when he said “one last chance to stop this.” When we found him after giving in or finally “learn something” as Hugo put it and he said he made a mistake and everyone was dying as we walked… liked the entire last few years of his life had been… realizing he couldn’t be saved and then asking Amicia to help him to save the world from his mistake, his giving in to the Macula after he thought Amecia had died… was heartbreaking. I cried like a baby when I realized there was no saving him. A young wise boy with so little experienced and so much yet to experience asks his sister to kill him to help him to protect the world from what he had allowed himself to become. He fought for so long not giving in to the Macula.. all the while being forced to watched everything everywhere he went be destroyed in his wake just by him existing there. Can you imagine the kind of weight that would put on the mind of a young child. But he was strong and resolute enough when he realized Amicia was still alive to reach out one last time and convince her to do the one thing she probably would’ve never wanted or considered doing if he hadn’t convinced her himself…. To kill him which had become one with the macula to stop him from destroying the world that he had experienced so little of… which had shown him such cruelty… but he loved and was willing to sacrifice his life for nonetheless. Maybe like Amicia I was so stuck in thinking such a innocent child having suffered so much couldn’t end up dying… stopping me from seeing what was going to happen at the end. Tragic, heartbreaking, breathtakingly, beautiful. Amicia and Hugo De Rune saved their world.

One a grizzled soldier out for revenge, the other a Smuggler that would be used to backstab others, if it meant she would survive and yet, they both play along with Hugo, indulges his likes and listen to him, never treating him like a nuisance, but as a someone who looks to them for help. I always expected Arnaud had an ulterior motive, but the way he would laugh at Hugo and his antics, carry him when he was too scared of the waves, made the actual scene more heart wrenching and tragic, because I had begun to think, "hey, maybe he really do care more about Hugo, than anything else!"

*Spoiler warning for the end of the game* . . . . . . . . . . . . One interesting thing I found out about after finishing this game is the ending. The story sets you up to kill Hugo at the end, but the writers also took into account those who couldn't find it within themselves to load that sling. If you don't kill Hugo within a certain amount of time, a cutscene plays where Amicia says she can't do it. This causes Lucas to say he's sorry, grab the crossbow, and kill Hugo himself. This also creates a small dialogue change in the epilogue chapter too. If Amicia kills Hugo, she mentions to Sophia in the epilogue that Lucas is off studying and that he needed it. Her tone indicates that they're on decent terms. However, if Lucas kills Hugo, she mentions that she can't bring herself to see Lucas because she still sees the moment he kills her brother. And she mentions that he *might* be off studying, as if she hasn't kept up contact with him. Furthermore, her tone suggests she doesn't hold him in high regard anymore. I love it when studios take multiple scenarios into account and put something in the game that reflects those scenarios. It's why Naughty Dog is my favorite game studio, because they have an attention to detail that I feel is second to none. A Plague Tale: Requiem is probably my game of the year right now. We'll see how GOW Ragnorok goes, but as of now I'd give it to Requiem.

Man I HATED that section. Absolute dogshit. The Count was programmed to roam near you even when you're "inivisble" under the tables, so you can't really sneak your way out of there unless you trap him. Which is also dogshit cos Amicia couldn't run fast due to her injury. And, the count's face was just dogshit I hated that character so much

I thought that part was made pretty direct to us. Those rooms you could trap in him were hinted at quite alot with the abundance of pots to break and attract him in there and also the white marks signifying the obvious way of slipping out and locking him in. Also, the dialogue literally saying to lock him in.

It's probably one of the few games that made me cry real hard, especially at the ending. I could feel the dread building up until the climax. This game has managed to make me feel the stuggles of Amicia and her brother. I felt that hope until the very end and man did I tear up realizing I was going to do what I had to do... Jesus. Kuddos to the french voice acting. It was really well done and the actors managed to express the emotions in a realistic way. Amazing game, and I can't wait for the next one.

Love your deep dives into games. One thing I disagree with though is how you didn't think the AI was smart. Not sure why on your playthrough the AI acted dumb but on mine I swear every single guards patrol routes were completely unpredictable. Anytime I got seen or they had a hint of me around, they would literally go away from their previous routes and start constantly hanging around the new place I am at and when I thought they would be walking in one direction so I could move, they randomly changed directions and caught me lol. They would check under tables and wagons and just were relentless on looking for me. 😆

So just to give my 5 cents to the arrow/bolt argument as someone who owns a bow, you are correct you "can" load an arrow into a crossbow but like you said it's longer and slimmer than a bolt, it's also way lighter than a bolt, an arrow would almost always break if fired from a crossbow plus it would be damaging to the crossbow as you're firing something lighter than it is ment for resulting in limbs of the crossbow breaking/the string coming off and harming the user.

Finally finished this game. This is a prime example of two things kinda lacking in modern gaming. A beautiful tragedy told well. And strong yet humane female character. I will be healing for some time after this masterpiece. Also when Luke was talking about the part where Hugo does not hold Amicia´s hand. There is a moment where she is strggling in pain to get over some wooden obstacle. Normally Hugo would help, ask her if she´s ok, anything. Here? He is silently observing with this eerie curious look. It took only few seconds but got me like "shit.."

What you said about the AI I think the game actually has those things but on hard difficulty. Because I played through the game on hard and I thought the AI was much smarter than that. For example when I distracted/got slightly spotted by the same guard three times he alerted everyone and the searched everywhere thoroughly even searching in the areas I was in. Like they wouldn't just search the other side of the map no they constantly searched the area I was in which made it a lot harder. But I also played the game very aggressively killing pretty much everyone.

Even tho I love the game the part that I really didn't like was the new companions. In the first game, all friendly characters that amicia meets where orphans, like her and her brother. It really made them feel more connected to them. For example (plague tale: Innocence spoiler) rodric's death has a major impact both on amicia and especially the player. Even tho you met him 3 or 2 chapters ago. Arnaud is sorta a rodric wanna-be, but the player can't relate amicia to him. Sure his well developed and lovable but I Arnaud was introduced like Nicholas and gave off mixed signals, he also tries to kill amicia and betrays her half way into the game, only to save her? Rodric immidietly helps amicia because they both share similar feelings for the inquisition, while also trying to avenge their fathers.

Really wish you spoke more on the sequence with the previous carriers tomb. There were many jaw dropping moments throughout the game, but during this scene, I was both visually appalled yet completely transfixed, and I think that might be one of the best moments from a narrative driven game ive seen in years. Youve explained the whole title super eloquently though and pretty much hit the nail on the head perfectly when it comes to the characters motives, desires and struggles. And its especially poignant that you mentioned that the plot requires the gameplay/ puzzles to be fairly simple, to keep the flow of the game consistent. I dont think a lot of people consider this in their review. One sticking point I dont think you mentioned though... the companions that Amicia has with her throughout the story never seem to really give any pull back to Amicias delusions in fixing Hugo. Just felt like they could have had a bit more of an air of responsibility towards Hugo and Amicia, and i dont doubt that they could have written that in there. And in that way they seemed kind of unbelievable. Its an excellent game though, and your critique is super thorough and well thought out. Subbed 👍

Another detail about this game is there are no boss fights. In the first game we had boss fights, but in this one while there are bosses we don't fight them in traditional ways. Also the change of companions as in the first game all the major companions are teenagers around amicias age. In this one aside from luke they are all adults. This to me signifes that amicia has to grow up and be just as capable as these adults in her one man army quest, but she slowly realizes she can't. In a world that is forcing her to grow up fast she is still just a kid at the end of the day

I honestly think they should've condensed this game to 12 chapters. The game was frustrating at times. I wish there were more combat and skill options. But overall, it is still enjoyable. 8.5 out of 10. 🙂

As a thought on your comment about nitpicking at 33:40 - I totally agree with you, just about any game has these small things that might not float everyones boat fully but most of the time it doesn't have any impact on the game as a whole because they are such minor things. But I think people comment on those because this age of the real world feels, at least to me, as one of absolutes. If it's not perfect, it's horrible. I just see a lot of people with black-or-white perspectives, not a gradient of grayscale with a thin line of black and white at either end like my own. If you have that definite black-or-white perspective, even the small details will become huge deals. Don't make mountains out of molehills.

Ability to physically fight people: I do not agree with you on this point. This is because narratively it would not make sense. I understand that amicia has become sort of badass but she is still just a teenager, and a small one at that. She SHOULD not be able to overpower trained soldiers in melle combat and I am sort of okay with the way they have implemented it here... Maybe they could have added some sort of smokescreen ability like batman, she already uses that to dowse the fires, she should be able to use that to escape encounters... Edit. AI: Something I really wanted to be better than what it is in the game... Edit. Enemy Archetypes: Completely agree with you on this point, the falcon moment was really good when it started, but became boring in less than a second.

The narrative and characters in this game are so, so strong, not to mention the amazing soundtrack and art design. This game's plot, and especially the ending, have pushed me in such a state of melancholy and emotional damage for the past week or two that I literally had to go to a phychologist for a session... And yeah, I cried my eyes out there too. At first what overwhelmed me was, of course, the sheer sadness, anguish, horror and shook, but in the following days, it was the perpetual feeling of pointlessness and a view that "after all, it still feels that there was something that could've been done differently to force a more positive outcome". And yes, it's "just" a game goddamnit, but seriously, The Green Mile, The Deer Hunter, Titanic, The Notebook, Million Dollar Baby, all of them combined don't hold a candle to this, for me at least. Now, when I find free time, I will start writing a journal, a diary, where I will put down on paper all my frustrations that stemmed from this game. Something similar to Marcus Aurelius' Meditations. I intend to write down all my frustrations, opinions, criticisms and maybe even hopes - because no matter how unrealistic it would seem right now, I will always, ALWAYS harbor some little hope that the developers will think better of what they did and bring Hugo back, or maybe even give US a chance/choice at saving him again.................... somehow. Knowing myself and how I always unintentionally start talking about 3 or 4 topics that are somewhat related, it would probably touch on things outside of the game but how they influenced it.. But yeah, I'll see what it would look like.
