A Painful(ly Bad) Goodbye To Assassins Creed: Odyssey - Luke Stephens

Ойын-сауық

We're going to go through the two major DLC expansions: Legacy of the First Blade and Fate of Atlantis. This video started as a full blown critique of both DLC’s but after a plethora of technical issues, hard drives failing, footage being corrupted, I’m left with a couple of options: I can critique the DLC’s together and look at them broadly to come to a conclusion using the footage and resources I have; OR I can start over and play through the 30 or so hours of DLC again to recapture all of the footage for a critique of DLC for a game that is over a year old… SO, I decided to go with the former.
We’re going to be looking at both DLC’s and breaking apart broadly what works what doesn’t. The cool things they did, and the choices they made that were nonsensical.

Luke Stephens legacy of the first blade was a huge missed opportunity. I think it should have been a Persia expansion where we play as Darius, see him form his organisation to take down the order, see him forge the hidden blade, see him kill Xerxes then see him try to run from his past alone (without his daughter in my idea she died in Persia with everyone else in Darius family) Then he meets the eagle bearer and Darius and the eagle bearer destroy the order in Greece. End of story.

@@Metal22 the choices don't matter because the end result is similar, it's the illusion of choice, Witcher 3 does choices very well and makes the side content blend into the main story line and it's very fleshed out. I think that the consequences could have worked, though not the main game. It would fit much better in a modern day assassins creed, rather than it being in the main story. Let that be the main fun, but there are consequences, such as story missing that won’t be received if you chose the wrong branch, or something like that. All in all, it might have worked, but the facts are here and this is our reality and game that we have

My biggest gripe with the games prior to AC Odyssey and Origins was the combat system, especially open combat. In my opinion, open combat grew stale but the stealth didn't disappoint me. Now, it seemed as if it's the opposite. I enjoy the latest entries' combat but the stealth is lackluster.

Legacy of the First Blade has some pretty horrid storytelling and characters. Natakas is just about the worst love interest I've ever seen in a game. Then the Fate of Atlantis looks great, but is super repetitive and boring overall with nearly no real storytelling to begin with. I was really hoping that Ubisoft would continue the trend of borrowing from the Witcher 3 by making some great quality expansions, but nope.

Totally agree. In hindsight, I was obsessed with the AC series. I used to go on forums every day after AC2 to see speculations, theories and hidden easter eggs that I didn't know existed. Each game ended with such amazing cliffhangers and twists and then AC3 came out, my most anticipated game probably of all time (besides maybe GTA V) and it ended on such a whimper and then every game after that pretended that the modern day plot wasn't important because they only listened to casual fans, and now it's a generic open world RPG with no semblance of originality. There was hope of something special with Odyssey but AC Odyssey imo is just a bad game. AC4, in terms of inside animus story and gameplay, was fantastic though.

Ac needs the same kind of change God of war had. Something more serious, and more sentimental and profound, something more heavy in every sense of the word, while still remaining badass. I really dislike the actual change they made, because it seemed like an excuse to introduce monetisation into the AC saga. As a result, the games are uninspired, repetitive and they lack an identity. A soul, so to speak. Albeit beautiful, and fun to explore a bit, they are VERY forgettable.

Because there’s no Creed to go by. the assassins blade wasn’t even created yet. They don’t even say the word assassins nearly enough in AC Odyssey, compared to the games that go’s by the Creed. Anyway I appreciate your hard work and merry Christmas.

You're right. Origins was about the creation of the Brotherhood and Odyssey was focused on the First Civilization. I believe Ubisoft clarified this when Odyssey was announced. However, I believe Ubisoft might have misunderstood the fans' level of interest in the First Civilization. For example, Origins introduced players to people closely associated with the First Civilization through the Pharoahs DLC. While it was different, many fans seemed upset with the supernatural aspect of the content. Personally, I didn't take the Pharoahs or Atlantis DLC seriously because I viewed them as just fun detours from their respective campaigns.

Then the Legacy of the first blade was a 4 out of 10 for the horrible storyline in places and the force romance that leads nowhere no matter what you do and I think breaks the lore in Origins and other games. The Fate of Atlantis I would give a 5 out of 10 for the lacking storyline, the lack of world building in the neat places, and the limited interest in the characters. I know this is totally random, but I JUST got that ainigma you mention by scrambling up one pillar, then mashing space and praying to every god (in game or not, lmao) that Kassandra would back eject and grab the highest point of the other. Sure enough, she did. I was able to shimmy around and climb up to the top level of the structure. Not to be a cranky old purist, but the newer AC entries have at least one inexcusable flaw: dumbing down what made the IP popular in the first place. Expressive parkour, social stealth, the ambiguity of good and evil in the Assassin/ Templar conflict, and so on. Ubisoft instead chose to deepen combat and gear systems, levelling and often pointless dialogue and romance options. Don't get me wrong, they're all done competently to a lesser or greater extent, but we've reached a point where their current implementation actively dilutes the identity of Assassin's Creed. I hope Ubisoft stops chasing fads and milking this franchise in the most shameless, disrespectful and exploitative ways possible. At the same time, I understand the company isn't doing great lately and making games is expensive, so naturally they go for the safest profitable opportunities. Time will tell if what makes Assassin's Creed unique will even be remembered by the average gamer a few years down the line. If not, the death of that piece of videogame art will be on Ubisoft's hands, and no one else's.

And if your reputation was far too bad, the brotherhood would stop offering support/supplies/whatever. Or even kick you out and force you to find your targets on your own. This could both provide a reason to act like an assassin and also to not do that in case you want to make the game more challenging for yourself.

Since you make such a big point of it as being necessary in the series' lore to have a lineage when you're talking about the relationship in First Blade, I feel that I should point out that that hasn't been true since at least Black Flag. Even just keeping to this game, the genetic material you use for Kassandra/Alexios at the very beginning of the game comes off the spear. Just DNA from touching it or being stabbed with it or whatever. Layla's not related to either, nor is she related to Bayek or Aya, instead getting their DNA straight from their corpses. Maybe this goes with your point about franchises needing to keep consistent rules. They've shown even in this game that lineage isn't necessary to the franchise anymore. Yet in this DLC they for some reason feel like there need to be children.

The only connection between the character and Athen is ....... like 3-5 bros you know over there. Compare to Sparta: You are a Spartian. Your family is Spartian. Halfway through the game you go to Sparta to apply for permanent resident. All of the cover and art depict your character wearing Sparta color. During the story, you fight alongside the Sparta a lot. If they just force you to be a Sparta but actually putting work in a single faction it would be much better than this shallow fake choice.

I didn’t really get your point about Ikaros’ perception. I spent the entire game flying around and directing the cursor to pinpoint enemies and rewards. It never did it automatically. And same goes with the quests, Ikaros perception seemed to remain the same from the first hour to the very last (for me 120h). You walk in the direction people told you to and then when you re very close you can pinpoint using Ikaros. But that’s still like 200m never more. I think the perception increase was just repetitive lies that made no sense. If there was a perception distance slider then I would get it. Or even if it could become automatic where you can pinpoint all enemies and rewards in a fort by just clicking one button. To some people it might seem like a cheat but listen….i cleared every single ? point in the game and when you re trying to complete games in this way it gets sooo incredibly tedious to just repeat the same action over and over and over again.

It just doesn't make sense because apple in origins should have reacted when she was near it and Hemu as well in the temple under Siwa(I mean when they both have high concentration of first civ DNA) (Desmond had high concentration of first civ DNA and could use the apple, heck even Kassandra could, why Aya and Hemu couldn't) .It youst shows Ubisofts inconsistencies. One more thing why aya why make her kassandras descendent just because she said she's half Greek it doesn't make sense she meant one of her parents is Greek not her great great great great... grandmother is Greek. I'm sorry but I hate Ubisoft Qubec for running not just odyssey, but for ruinning Origins which I really liked and AC univers as a whole. It's a leghty one yes there are probably some typos, but I really hope you'll understand. AC is one one of my favourite universes in gaming and I don't want it to be destroyed because of lazy people who don't understand AC lore(the main one,the one and only, the true one, the one Patrice Desilet made in 2007 with first AC and the one Darby McDewitt continued to work on)

@@AnneDank69420 let's prey Ashraf Ismail and his team have hired Darby McDewitt as lead writer for theri next project and will be as good as black flag or ezio trilogy. I have a lot of faith in Ubisoft Montreal especially now that Ashraf is a creative director.

Man I absolutely adored Origins and all the post launch but Odyssey idk man Idk if it’s being overwhelmed at all the side stuff, the jarring sort of magic abilities or maybe I’m just not that into Greek history but yeah everytime I try to pick it up and continue playing I can’t be B O T H E R E D

Was the magical abilities jarring because of how heavily Odyssey leaned into them? I ask this because Eagle Vison has existed since the first game but it didn't seem to be an issue.

@@gotho5466 Ah, so the more overt powers? Considering that the Apple of Eden was an artifact from the First Civilization like Leonidas' spear, the abilities aren't that far of a stretch. Still, I prefer that the First Civilization didn't exist in the series at all. The focus on traveling to the past was always what most people were interested in throughout the series anyways. By the way, Merry Christmas to you!

Both me and my girlfriend bought this game. She beat the game through and through all dlc and got platinum trophy. I just completed the base game and gave her the controller. I’m a long time AC fan whereas she’s fairly new. She loved it and all aspects of the game. For me it was too much of a departure from the original games. I’ll always buy AC games but i don’t think I’ll ever move past the base games.
