A Packrafting Expedition - Kayak Camping Wilson Creek pt 1

Фильм және анимация

Sometimes, you have to do something against the flow. Sometimes you must leave behind the traditional parameters and safeguards. It was time for something unsanctioned. Join us on our packrafting expedition that covers the entire length of the Wilson Creek in North Carolina. Our journey begins on high on the peaks of Grandfather Mountain where we lose a team member, hike into the night and find a terrific camp. We pick up the source of the Wilson Creek on the South face of Calloway Peak and then follow the river by foot until it becomes floatable by raft. We continue the journey down the river through the Class IV gorge section and beyond. Come enjoy some kayak camping in the form of packrafting!

Pete I've messaged you several times. While watching this video I'm smiling. When I got interested in white water I visited a friend in North Carolina. To my spirits he took me to Wilson Creek. To this day counting many rivers that run down Wilson Creek was one of the funnest trips I've done. Thanks for all the tips you share bud.

Hated seeing Greg have to leave, but that climb was epic. Makes me want to back away from this computer and go workout so I could pull something like this off…but I guess that I will just go wash & wax the wife’s truck, then carry her out to eat again…you know, to butter her up for another boat purchase. ;-)

There were a couple times on your Grandfather Mountain climb where I was thinking: "aw, hell no!" And then I remembered in 2013 I did that same climb and said "aw hell no" many times, but kept pushing. The two parts I mainly remember were the ladders and the chute. Such a great climb. Mt. Mitchell was easy the next day after that.

Great start to the new series. Man...that is one sketchy trail on that cliff face. I can relate to Greg....at 56, I feel I am in a race with time, that is why I value each time I can get outdoors on a trail or a river. I often wonder how I will feel when I can't do it anymore, guess that is why I often push myself so hard, because I know time is a thief and eventually I will wear out....but until then...like you say....Onward!

That is the toughest and most beautiful trail in NC but as a way to get to a navigable stream...???? It will be interesting to see if you hit a steep stream with no trail beside it and have to muscle those little old packs down thru the clinging scratchy rhododendron. Oh FUN FUN FUN !! @@RiverKingsKayak We can beat the Leadmine for ya ! The 2nd best trail for rugged scenery in NC is the LNCW in Linville Gorge. Like Leadmine, it is not on the USFS map, and it is so risky that some map makers deliberately leave it off. It runs UNDER the NC Wall. LNCW = Lower NC Wall. You could haul your float-packs down thru it to the Sphinx and scramble off the south side of the Sphinx down down down to the river..no trail but vegetation is low. From the Linville river, you could float down. Problem with that is that the class 3,4,5, is all upstream behind you. So forget i mentioned it. How silly of me ! LNCW can not beat Grandfather for scenery but it is a joyous scramble and will kick most hiker's BUTT.
