Hi Danny. Time to pull out pliers and make a steadier stake for your orchid. You can make a smaller ring for bottom of pot then connect stakes to the bottom ring. Then make a larger ring above your bulbs to hold leaves. The moss will hold bottom ring in place. Perhaps 12 or 14 gauge steal wire with a little twisting will help. Wish someone would make a pot that would have holes where you can push a stake thru for the hobbist. If the wires would rust will the rust bave bad effects on orchids. Ive see where growers would intentionally put rusty nails into dirt. Have a nice weekend also.

I so needed this! Mine is starting to bloom and it's my first of this type of orchid. It's still in the 3 inch pot it came in. Now I have a resource for when I need to repot mine from someone I trust.

Wow, it looks so much better. My Catts are still blooming, if you can believe it, I'm waiting for them to be done so I can clean, clean, clean them all up and give them new medium. I hate seeing them covered with algae. Drives me crazy. Great video... Keep them coming. Have a blessed weekend! See ya, Monday!

One of my catasetums has aborted it's spike two years in a row, they get about an inch long then just turn yellow and stop. Do you know what might make it do this?

I have a nice ammount of Catasetum species at home, THE BEST I could do for them is to pot them with horse/cow dung (dry) between 2 layers of bark. Lots of water during the growing season and almost no water when the leaves and flowers are gone. This is also effective with other Catasetinae (Mormodes, Clowesia and Cycnoches).... AND LOTS OF LIGHT ! ! !

Hallo from Germany 🤚🏻 Question? I would like to say thank you for all your amazing videos and for all the great knowledge. I started collecting orchids after I come across your videos. I have a question? I purchased 2 catasetum recently and the leaves start getting yellow.😬 What would be the cycle for my area? I’m at the Baltic Sea area and the temperature started dropping. Did I kill them already? Thank you for your help and time. Sue ,

You should definitely try the PET method, that 's how brasilian people grow catasetinaes and it's the best method i 've tried

I have about 6 catasetums of which three are in semi hydro and three in bark and moss. One is still to flower - its bud is swelling nicely - but the rest have shown no sign at all of yellowing or dying back. Should I stop watering anyway? Or carry on watering (they're still drinking like crazy) and fertilizing, including the one about to flower?

I brought a Dendrobium from our hardware store, so the label says Dendrobium orchid. It drinks water daily!! But you do what you need to for your orchids 🤗

For when the leaves fall, why don't you just tie a string between all three sticks, to support the pseudobulbs while you wait for the new growth to grow with new leaves? That way you will still have the tall circle there to support the leaves when the new growth gets much larger? :)

  • @MissOrchidGirl

Hi, supporting psb between them implies at least a few have decent roots to anchor them. Tying them to each other without having barely any roots will not help, they would all just flop to one side, like they do now. Also Catasetum psb are not flexible, the base is too thick for them to actually get closer to each other :)

@@MissOrchidGirl I'm sorry if I was confusing ^^; I didn't mean to tie the growths together. I meant to use the rods of the plant support you have in place, instead of cutting them shorter, tie a string between them for the pseudobulbs to rest on since the plant support seems stable. That way the ring of the plant support will still be there up high for when it grows the new bulb with leaves. Does that make sense?

Early in the video you said that this orchid was in semi-hydro not self watering. I’ve watched a lot of your videos and failed to make the distinction between the 2 methods. I thought you were using the terms interchangeably. Do you have a video comparing the methods and their uses?

Hi, you can learn more about self watering here kzread.info/dash/bejne/iZ2t2tiviNibhJM.html if you just search youtube you'll find plenty more of my videos on the subject. I don't have a direct comparison video, it's a good idea, thanks! :D

Just wondering Danny, why didn't you take off the oldest back-bulb to try and strike a keiki from it as a bac-up for your main plant? I do realise you have limited growing space.

Hi Danny Doesn't paraffin oil in spider mite control spray clot the stromata of leaves? How can I prevent this?

  • @MissOrchidGirl

    @MissOrchidGirl

Hi, according to some sources online which talk about horticultural oils based on mineral, rather than vegetable oil, paraffin evaporates a lot quicker. So there is no danger supposedly if the proper ratios are used :)

Hey, Danny. I'm one of your followers here on KZread, for, I guess, quite sometime now :) from The Philippines. Have to commend you for a job well done on these stuff - very useful and informative channel! Needles to say, I'm also a hobbyist and obsessed with these lovely organism! Been growing orchids since I was about 10 yrs old and my first, which I fell in love with, was a dendrobium. Currently, I have dendrobiums as the majority of my collection. :) Well, let me get into my 'sharing', which is basically the purpose of me getting in touch with you.. .. Not sure if you've heard about this or thought about it or maybe someone from your our group (followers) already suggested this to you or what - have you or do you play harmonic music or practically any 'nice' music to your orchids? Sounds out of the box, right? When I was a kid, one of my older neighbors told me that orchids love music (he didn't specify the genre though). And when you look it up online, it's somewhat true. In fact, there were studies conducted to plants in general, the way they respond to musical frequency thud stimulating them to grow, bloom, etc. I guess, not only orchids or plants in general but all organisms as a whole love music. I play music for my babies every day for about 20-30mins and so far they look amazing a happy :) Cheers! Excited to hear your comment on this! Thanks, Danny!

Hi, I think everyone should do what they feel happy doing in their hobby, as long as we don't bother others, all is cool :) I personally usually go for true scientific documentation, the music to plants aspect has been debunked for a while, I chose to believe that. But in the end do what makes you happy, it's your hobby ;) good luck!

Why not add a second level of support with pipe cleaners instead of cutting the bottoms. That way you still have the tall level for when the new leaves appear on the new growth.

Sue McDowell yes I live in SW Louisiana tropical , never know about winter so we put everything in green house an for the Catasetum came beautiful an I didn’t transplant it to another pot put in southern window and watered constantly my leaves start to die bottom up but it’s October so I’m going to watch it will pack tighter in moss when leaves all fall an make sure I quit watering so I will see what works for me in a humid climate! I have had to adapt all my orchids and exotic flowers to this climate and it has worked. So I watch an learn from people like Dani an few others. A lady in Australia had a gorgeous Catasetum beautiful big colorful bloom s an she had them ready for spring in a well lit room packed in moss so I’m gonna see if I can get that result. But Dani always my first go to.
