I saw it a few weeks ago. It's quite brutal, but it could have been more so had it stuck closer to the book. The production values, cinematography, and acting are all top notch. I watched it in German with English subtitles. It left me thinking that the filmmakers felt obliged to include some extra historical context because the war happened more than a hundred years ago and young people today may not have studied it in school. All Quiet on the Western Front is a 1929 novel written by Erich Maria Remarque, a German veteran of World War I. I read the book when I was a kid and enamored with war. It was first adapted to film in 1930 and went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture. The Library of Congress restored that film in 2006 and they did a great job. The 1930 movie holds up quite well, with anti-war message intact. Also check it out when you can.

I have not seen this version yet but I intend to, my favorite version so far is the one from 1979 with Richard Thomas and Ernest Borgnine. I highly recommend it and also the book these movies are based on by Erich Maria Remarque.

It's a great movie. Trench warfare was horrific.

I can recommend the movie. But be warned: That is a tough movie to watch and very bloody, violent, sad and bleak. If you are watching it: Definitely watch it in German with English subtitles. Not only because the German language adds to the realism. They did a really outstanding job with the sound design that is mentioned in many reviews. But only for the German language version for unknown reasons. Not for the English dubbed version.

Another bleak movie to check out is Threads. Sort of a docudrama of the aftermath of nuclear war with creepy production.

this movie is a masterpiece! I am French and we often had films on the ww1 on the French side (with no Senegalese skirmishers who died for France) English Scottish Canadian and American show us the ugly Germans when they were only poor men of the people either mobilized or indoctrinated! The film tirailleur with Omar Sy will soon be released on Cinéma, you can already see the trailer

The movie had a good story line and visuals. Although the main character was conflicted, he soldiered on until 1 minute to the cease fire......bayonet through the heart from the back.....
