A Muslim Convert and an Ex-Muslim Have a Conversation

I've had a great conversation with a recent Muslim convert, Khalil, on why he converted to Islam and why I left Islam. This is the best exchange with a Muslim that I've had so far.

I really enjoyed this great conversation. I would suggest not to be hostile and abusive in any way. I appreciate how open and friendly he was, and I think it can only be good to continue this friendly relationship. I'll be happy to host him here as well to continue this discussion. I thank James for hosting these conversations. You can subscribe to his channel to support such open discussions. Islam is the fastest growing religion, and this cannot be denied, and this is confirmed by reports from the Western Research Center itself The number of those who convert to Islam annually are hundreds of thousands, and those who leave it are few hundreds..Dr. Abdullah bin Mansour, head of the Federation of Islamic Organizations in Europe in a 1 hour interview with Al-Jazeera in 2017, said that the number of converts to Islam in their mosques daily across all europe is 320 people, which mean about 117,000 new muslims in Europe, most of them women marry Muslims And you should know that whoever leaves Islam, Allah will bring others better than him who will be Muslims and love Allah, [𝐎 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐝, 𝐰𝐡𝐨𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 - 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐡 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 [𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦] 𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐦 [𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐚𝐫𝐞] 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬; 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜. Many mosques in Germany are also half empty because most of muslims there are Turkish and Turkish are 50/50 islamic. If you go to UK, mosques are usulalfuller because the people going there have usually Pakistani background and they are more Conservative and in many ways backwards. The fact remains that many are pressured. I know many ex-muslims who have to fake their are muslims because of their families or communities.

It's because, according to the ahadith, Muhammed was welcomed into a polytheistic city and allowed to stay there and preach to his people and practice his religion his way as long as he didn't disturb the peace and when Muhammed started to pit people against each other by ridiculing and condemning the religion of the people of the city he was asked to stop doing that several times and then told he would get thrown out if he continued and he was thrown out because he didnt stop and the muhammed pulled the victim cards and whined he wasn't thrown out becuase of his behaviour that went against the agreement he had made but because he is a muslim and during rammadan he and his companions terrorized the caravans and eventually the city and he destroyed the idols and claimed the kabaa for his religion and told his followers to take the girls as slaves and to rape the children and wives in front of the fathers and husband. I'm a muslim and this is the issue I'm struggling with. If Allah knows everything, like predetermined everything, then that means he knows whose going to heaven or hell even before he created all existence. (Example: Allah basically know that Adam and Eve will eat the fruit from the forbidden tree and he will have the foreknowledge of Satan's betrayal because he have already predetermined the narrative) So where does freewill fits into the whole thing? If there is a freewill, then we have the ability to 'surprise' Allah with our choices. If we are able to do that, then Allah's omniscience and omnipotence qualities can be question, which makes it seem like he is not the real deal (God).

If Khalilullah actually went through such a journey from catholic Christianity to agnostic atheism to hardcore atheism to being a Muslim, I can confidently say he would not last long as a Muslim. As he claims he studied astrophysics, I could not help but laughed. It would be nice to know which books of astrophysics he studied exactly and how he landed in such claim that creationism fits better than the science itself. Note: Astrophysics is not easy to study and almost impossible to master without being involved in academia unless you are some kind of prodigy. Studying astrophysics does not mean reading random science blogs online. It means the person has sufficient background in physics and mathematics to understand the planetary/stellar/galactic dynamics and has been trained by a supervisor to learn independent research. Getting into degree programme to study astrophysics in academia is not a joke either. Only best of the best science students make it there. I hope Khalil clarifies if he only read random science blogs or actually studied astrophysics.

@@cocojumboist520 As humans, we have very limited senses to comprehend the secret of the universe. We need to think about the universe without adding time to the equation, but because we are born into it, it's hard for us to not think about things without adding time. For example, if time was created with the universe, there wasn't time before it, there is actually no concept of "before" as there was no time. Even that is almost impossible for us to comprehend because all we know is speaking about with time. How can we explain things that might exist in the universe without using time? That is one of the things that I am troubled about the most. If "Y" is time, there might be "X" out there, that we humans just have no ability to comprehend, no matter what we do, we just have this limitation as "machines". So with that limited capabilities, we try to understand something with logic that is related to the world that we can understand. Now to your point, religion does give a logical explanation that we can comprehend. I always think about "the creator" but I also have questions about "Who created the creator, and if that creator was there for no limit of time, or outside of time as we know it, I can also accept that that everything around us was there for no limit without a god. I start reading the Quran and listen to many debates online and I am still not convinced. I am not a person who is convinced by the number of believers and What I do want is for whatever my brain leads me to accept something as truth (whatever computations it does there in the brain), to have the same thing about religion, but that yet to happen. This means, that I am not any religious apologist but I am open to listening to what others have to say. Thing is that many debates there are between people who lack so much understanding of so many topics requires to properly debate that most of them I can't take seriously. Even with all the respect to the effort AP does, he lacks so much understanding in so many fields that can easily and properly counter different arguments from a different angle but he learns a lot each day. Regarding purpose in life. I thought about it a lot. I think we are purpose-making machines. We give things purpose. I saw videos of the probability of creation without intervention, but the thing is, even if there is the slightest chance - IT'S STILL A CHANCE, no matter how low it is. Overall, I am not an apologist, I am sincere and honest in my approach and I give all faiths a chance and it's up to me to decide whether I decide to accept any one of them or not. I love the journey and I continue to listen to all sides and learn. The thing is, that the people I know that can debate these topics with great knowledge of physics, biology, history, philosophy, etc - Don't even spend a single second talking about religion, they just think it's a waste of time to even talk about it. They spend their time on other things. I give religion a chance, still learning from all sides. Thank you. If there is no purpose, so why I am writing it. Because I give it a purpose.

@3:55 They did not murder his daughter, she served at the Tabernacle in Shiloh the rest of her life. Read Judges 11:30-40, he says "...whoever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return ...will become Jehovah's, and I will offer that one up AS a burnt offering." The Israelites were used to giving sacrifices to God in the form of burnt offerings of animals, but when he says this vow he is talking about a human, so he doesn't mean to burn them, he is simply saying to give, just as he also gives to God burnt offerings. How he carries out his vow proves this was the intent and meaning of his words because she is allowed to mourn her virginity (that is, because she won't marry and will remain a virgin) for 2 months and then regularly the young women of Israel would give her commendation four days a year for upholding her father's vow. The account even said "she never had relations with a man" - so she upheld that vow the rest of her life (11: 39).... which would be nothing special if they killed her right away. This accusation is ludicrious anyway because human sacrifice was never a function of Israelite worship of Jehovah. It is one reason that Jesus' speech about himself being a sacrifice was shocking and strange to many Jews of his time. Even though prophecy foretold it, it was never a custom except with animals.

Regardless of his beliefs on how to define kafir, he must look at history to see how Islamist's have identified them, for example, the US troops in Afghanistan were frequently referred to as kafir. Also, I would love to know how he reconciles his prior moral code with the radically different moral code within Sharia (corporal punishment of wives, women as inferiors, for example). It would be great to see more conversations between you both as I still have so many questions.

The dude that promised to kill his daughter because of a deal was to show to never ever make such a promise. He had no reason to make such an oath. The Bible was condemning the practice and showing why it should not be done.

Good and respectful dialogue, this is the kind of conversations that helps build understanding and move the conversation. I feel that too much time is spend dealing with Islamic apologists who are inconsistent on the standards they want both parties to adhere to (i.e moving the goalposts and hypocrisy), while desperately looking for ''gotcha-moments'' - instead of having actual exchanges that come from a place of sincerity. This felt a real breath of fresh air AP. Good content !

I recently left islam 2 days ago, because there are scientific and historical errors in the Quran. If it's really the word of our creator.. It must have zero errors. I'm really felt horrible. because i tought i finally found the truth with islam. Right now i believe in a creator but without religion. The creator could be anything in my opinion.. From a A.I to a energy to robot. Anything is possible.. I want my creator to know i'm really thankfull for everything and that i love my creator with all my heart and soul.

Best discussion yet with a new Muslim convert, thanks AP. It's worth noting that Khalil spent time with Afghani Muslims. There often seems to be a romanticised attraction towards Islam when travelling in Muslim-majority countries. The people are 'different' and very hospitable, there can be an emotional response to the call to prayer and the mosque architecture is very appealing. If you talk to Khalil again, please ask him how he feels about Islam's treatment of women and girls. I don't know how westerners can accept the horrible status that females have in Islam. I'm referring to Quran ayahs about guardianship, polygamy, wife-beating, prepubescent girl marriage, rape in marriage, inequality of divorce, sex slavery, etc.

I always think it's bizarre these ex-Catholics bringing up the Old Testament, that folkloric ramble, when criticizing Christianity. I was brought up Catholic, I am no longer a believer, but we were always told, Christ while honouring the OT - basically abrogated it by saying, only through me will you reach the father. So all that bronze-age tribal rambling was simply sidelined for the new testament of Christ. This was in the 60's - so before this guy's time. So why do they still bring up the OT as an example of Christianity - Christianity, we were always told, even way back in the 60's - is a New Testament religion.

Because it's not entirely clear. And it's not that simple either. I don't know what the creed of the Catholic Church is on this, but in my opinion it can be interpreted either way. This also concerns the question of the Trinity and the divinity par excellence: at least in the synoptic gospels and also in the apostolic letters this is not clear. It seems that Jesus was not made God until John's Gospel, which is strongly Greek. The idea of the Trinity comes from Neoplatonism.
