A mother’s betrayal | Carte Blanche | M-Net

At just two years old, Chevonne Rusch had endured a difficult upbringing. Throughout her short life, the little girl and her siblings were violently abused and neglected. Friends and neighbours repeatedly reported the abuse to the police and to authorities but no one acted. Then she was brutally murdered. It’s a tragic story, but our investigation shows that Chevonne’s death could’ve been prevented had authorities taken action. Instead, their inaction coincided with an escalation in the abuse and, in the end, a tragic loss of life. Carte Blanche investigates how the state, as custodians of vulnerable children, continues to fail them.

Not going to happen. Best we can do, is take justice into our own hands. If you witness or become aware of child abuse, do NOT contact the police or social workers....that will bring you nowhere, I am talking from experience. 1. Get a group of people together that can collectively raise R5k. 2. Go to your nearest taxi rank, and seek out the Taxi association. 3. When to speak to their representative, tell them your story and that you need someone to take care of it. 4. You're welcome. 😉

Despite this being very very difficult to watch, this is a reminder of the failing justice and welfare system in our country. Thanks to the efforts of Carte Blanche and former state employees who are willing to assist daily on these difficult cases to help friends and families find some form of closure. There are so many children in need of love and care, however their voices are made silent by the injustice of a failing system. We as communities need to stand up, step in and help in any way we can to stop abuse and domestic violence.

I tried to report a case of child abuse when a girl ran into my house, vomiting from fear of her stepfather wanting to beat her up. No response from the police. The next morning, the police arrived 8 men strong with patrol vehicles on a case of child kidnapping. Unchain the Child returned the child to the mother, and everyone is still awaiting a court date to appoint a DSD social worker. She has since arrived with yet more bruises and markings at my house, but Unchain keeps on telling me that I should mind my own business. One child was already removed and placed in a place of safety after serious abuse. I think the entire situation is ridiculous, and someone should look into the idiotic cowboy style child protective services of Unchain the Child.

They just don't get back to ypu. Not in the jurisdiction of where the abuse was committed. 4 months later and I haven't even gotten a court order for being a place of safety. I've now given up. Just another case demonstrating the consequences of state employees that are not qualified and/or able to do the job that they are paid to do. The police were not procrastenating, that implies they were going to do something eventually. If the guy had an outstanding warrant why did they not use that to act when it was initially reported. An able-bodied, critically thinking officer would have been able to take action when a member of the public reports a crime commited against a CHILD!

Could this be considered a violation of human rights? Shouldn't child services and law enforcement be held responsible for their actions? It seems hypocritical for a country to pursue justice at the International Court of Justice for crimes against humanity, yet fail to address similar issues within its own borders. Instead, there appears to be a lack of accountability, with officials receiving substantial salaries while taxpayers bear the burden. This situation is deeply concerning and warrants immediate attention.

I cannot believe how you can watch a child being thrown about, punched and do nothing about it. Also, why aren't we deploying a decent amount of Afrikaans speaking police at each station?? I am DISGUSTED. This child deserves justice. This child was probably waiting for her mum to swoop in and stop the beating and she did nothing.

The police. Our social systems are at derail the moment people working in departments that are supposed to be serving people only work there for their own survival. In Zimbabwe, there’s a saying that if you fail your secondary education, go to be a police officer. This is how we end up in these circumstances😩

Unfortunately these are the overlooked failures of the captured state. As bad as it is, that child was spared further abuse and a life of torment. Just like everything else in this country - if you need to have something done - do it yourself. Take the children away and find them somewhere safe - and figure it out from there.

We hear what you are saying. The problem is the unequal application of rule and law. Watch yourself get arrested and tried for kidnapping when the abusers suddenly turn into concerned parents and the police enforce that side of it without mercy. But alas, at least that may expose the abuse enough to get action taken. I suppose it's worth it to save a child anyhow

Let’s start our own private “justice for children” group and take matters into our own hands! If the police are not caring then why should we sit back and accept it. It’s not going to change and we all know that. It’s time we fight for the children and do what it takes to help them.

  • @annatanneberger1

The world loves "blended families." It is the modern thing. But the reality is that blended family means step parents. And step parents abuse - because it is someone else's child that is in the way. And if the second biological parent is absent there is nobody to protect the child. My mother died when I was 14. My father remarried 6 months later. I became effectively homeless. At least I wasn't a helpless toddler. But the betrayal of the biological parent is the deepest, most long-lasting pain, leaving very deep scars.

Whomever turned these pleas of help away should be held accountable. As a mother it is her DUTY to protect her children to the death. This is so far removed from everything that is right. Nobody should be allowed to be breeding if they can’t tell right from wrong. This is horrifying across the spectrum on so many levels. Poor babies. 😢

Fellow SAns, approach the Dept of Social Development offices when you witness any kind of child abuse. Take the name of any person who will assist you there. If you are not satisfied, you can report them to their superiors. However, it rarely gets to that point because social workers there will help you.
