    I think it is an exaggeration to say that you either ban them and leave them in existing homes or lock them up in a cage alone. Everyone who follows this subject knows that the next responsible step in this situation is to put a monkey like this into a sanctuary with large outdoor enclosures where they live with other monkeys. Owners are asked to pay board to cover the expenses so many would just assume keep them in that case.

  • @sarahdara1982

    @sarahdara1982

    2 жыл бұрын

    Sanctuaries are full of former pet monkeys that were relinquished when their “owners” couldn’t deal with them anymore. The monkeys waiting for an opening are often kept isolated in a cage. This monkey should never have been a pet, but after 14 years it would be incredibly traumatizing and stressful to take him away from all he’s ever known. Let the monkeys that are being abused, neglected and isolated have the precious sanctuary spots because their circumstances are far more grim than this monkey’s. Don’t get me wrong-keeping a monkey as a pet is a form of abuse in and of itself. But a well cared for adult “pet” monkey is in much better circumstances than the vast majority of monkeys in that situation. At his age he won’t be able to learn how to socialize with other monkeys, and he can’t be set free. At a sanctuary he will still be interacting with humans and living an unnatural life, and he’ll also lose the only people he knows.

  • @pinkmonkeybird2644

    @@andrewbrendan1579 Agreed. There’s a huge difference in how we treat our domesticated pets (cats, dogs, small mammals like guinea pigs and rabbits) and how we treat a wild animal, especially one as complex as a primate. We spay and neuter our pets because there’s a huge overpopulation problem. We welcome pets into our home because they provide us companionship and affection. Having a undomesticated wild animal in a home setting isn’t a good idea, and again primates are intelligent, long-lived animals that live in highly complex social groups and are extremely active. Bringing them into a home setting for decades is a recipe for disaster, especially after they grow out of their adorable baby stage and start vying for social standing in their troop - the family that purchased him. In the end, there’s a glut of unwanted primates as well and not enough sanctuary space where they can be surrendered. They just make terrible pets and we need to enact laws to stop people from breeding and selling them.

    How does Nick’s family feel about people that have KZread channels devoted to glorifying raising monkeys as pets? They can and do get very aggressive when commenters point out the obvious; that monkeys as pets is a bad idea; and that it is wrong not to show the downside of the monkey ‘pet’ along with the ‘cute’. People watch those and then ‘they gotta have one!’ And then there are the people that have ‘babies’ that get traded in for new babies and teach one goes through starvation and torment. I love monkeys and I am glad your family is in for the long haul and that you are speaking out to discourage monkey ownership!

    When I lived in Cambodia I kept two of them as an experiment for pets. And when we seen in the wild how they are we can understand why the local villagers would kill and eat a lot of these. Capuchins are from South america. So the natives down there they don't try to capture them for pets unless it's poachers... Most of the time the poachers will kill the moms with long-range guns and take the babies which they're usually about three to four weeks old if they're lucky to get them that old sometimes they'll get them as young as a whole week. They also have illegal pet trades in South America . All you got to do is know the right person and you can get a baby monkey that's practically three days old... That's why I respect the people from Cambodia when I was there. They would have uses for them especially if they were able to catch a few of the young juveniles. They cook them. Simple solution.

    That is not normal monkey behavior. They belong to a troop, where they learn their place in the pecking order. Humans don't know how to do this. It's why when people dump their pet monkey in the wild, many times other monkeys will kill it, because it wasn't socialized to be with other monkeys. They also don't have the skills to find food or live in wild. I hope there is a total ban on primate pets.

    Yeh it’s just being a normal monkey. This is actually pretty decent behavior. They attack people, and each other, constantly. It’s not like a dog where they have an alpha male/female and then the others fall in line. They’re a hierarchical species and constantly challenge and fight and look to improve their rank. It’s in now way an appropriate pet

    Please - anyone asking themselves if they want a non-human primate as a pet, just don’t. It’s so effing cruel to the monkey. They are part of large social groups and need their own kind. No human can completely satisfy a monkey’s needs. I hope every government bans keeping exotics like these. If you’re watching this and you STILL get a monkey, go get your head checked. You’re obviously selfish.
