@@poulwinther Really? I dig the design. From your name Poul, I am going to guess that you are in / from Northern Europe (I hope that's OK with you). In Australia we have these soulless LED digital clocks in most railway stations. Therefore, when I was in Switzerland those railway clocks were emblematic of a form over function approach to public utilities that I admired. Do you think that constant exposure to such designs removes that fascination that I felt?

  • @poulwinther

@@anthonysmith2982 Yes, Denmark. Perhaps you have a point, but I just think this one is a bit heavy on the function part and conversely light on aesthetics. The contrasts are screaming too loudly for me and I think a simple Timex Fairfield just looks a lot better in a similar style. In Denmark we have very similar railway clocks to the Swiss. They never struck me as anything but practical, which they certainly are. I may not be the best Nordic person to ask though, as I love ornaments and deep colors - complicated watch dials for that matter. I can enjoy some Bauhaus designs but I generally find Scandinavian minimalism cold and boring.

Great review. I just picked up the 40mm automatic with no date and the glowing in the dark hands. Got a 15% discount which made me happy. I wish they would come back with the Stop2Go movement on their watches. They still have it in the wall clock which they have in Bluetooth and wi fi which make them super accurate atomic time clocks. Love the smooth motion of the seconds hand on this automatic. Swiss quality. Thank goodness for the Swiss. Yes it was a little pricey but the red paddle being waved at the conductor is a story in my mind about time and punctuality. Fun to own.

I have the 36mm, no complication, Quartz (not the Stop2Go), it was 60% off (because of the size and it was on the fabric strap), and I wear it in the week and I absolutely love it! I put it on my wrist, don’t have to be as gentle with it as I would a mechanical watch. But it’s such a simple, attractive design, that when I look down at it I get lost (probably to other people it looks like I really struggle to tell the time...). It’s so easy to read (one of my aunties has poor eyesight, she has the 26mm and can still read it)!

Seems the prices have gone up a lot recently. I bought the sapphire auto version a few years ago on Amazon for about AUD800. I love it, but agree about the difficulty using the crown. The other limiting factor for me is lack of lume. A new design which is very cool is putting lume on the BACK of the hands which creates a silhouette in the dark - an excellent solution that maintains the pure black of the hands. If I were capable, I'd be tempted to take the watch apart and paint the back of the hands with lume. The other thing about this video is that the VAST majority of Mondaines are quartz and about a quarter of the price. I think they only do the autos for complete watch nerds - and they charge accordingly.

Unfortunately when I bought mine BIG watches were popular so I bought the ‘giant’ so sounds huge but is in fact only 42mm. Looks big though as there is no bezel and mine is lugless too (as the spring bars are under it), so goes straight from strap to face. The strap is great quality but I have to admit recently I have not worn it much. Enter Jody that makes me like it again after it went on my to sell list too. 🙄

I got one from their entry-level "essence" line, featuring a black organic-resin case that looks fantastic with the dial, and two recycled-material straps. Shipped from a UK eBay store to the US for only like $130-$150. It's not my primary style of watch, but I really like having this iconic face as an option, for not too much money.

It was a beautiful looking watch but the ticking second hand missed almost every single second marker. That was something I could not live with for a Swiss watch costing, for me, a little fortune. Luckily I bought it from John Lewis who's return process is excellent.

Glad I got mine from massdrop a couple years ago. Still has the Selita, brushed instead of polished, sapphire crystal, and $300. Also the strap is black with red on the underside, cool effect. Much prefer it over this more expensive model.

Sir! You always nail my taste! I've been looking for a Mondaine or similarly well readable watch for about a year. I always found it too expensive. The brand Berny (on Aliexpress) make similar watches. Btw: Do You know Festina? They make fancy and cheaper watches, but on the same level of quality! I do recommend to You to review them! I'd love to watch a couple of vids about them in Your presentation!

Would love to see you review of the Mondaine Stop 2 Go quartz, with the back light Luminova... I think it's a more interesting design and features that the Sellita automatic movement, and I've never thought that about quartz watches before.

I've always been drawn to this piece but I honestly don't know when I would wear it? If you dress like Ethan Hawke in Gattica, or even better, the guys from Kraftwerk then you're fine - but with a jeans and t-shirt?... - probably not. The price is nuts too, but that said, the quartz model with the stop seconds at 12 and the jump minute, as well as that crazy arsed way of time changing is the one to go for IMHO.

I saw these a while ago but only in quartz . Really nice looking watch. Only place I can find the automatic in UK is manufacturer's web site and only in 40mm at £600. The crystal looks pretty exposed and should sapphire. Probably more sensible as a quartz but the day date version doesn't seem to be available.

I got the quartz version of this as an X-mas present in 2007- I wasn't familiar with the brand and was instantly smitten. 15+ years later and it's still ticking, I just got the crystal replaced.

Jody. You’ve actually reviewed the watch that I own. I think you went to the wrong watch. I went for the “stop to go” quartz model which has a sapphire crystal and two quartz movement inside - one motor to control the seconds and a separate motor to control the hours. This model imitates the actual clock in Switzerland which every 58 seconds stops at the top at 12 o’clock and waits two seconds before starting again in order to synchronise all the watches cross the Swiss railway system - absolute stunner as the minute hand moves and seconds later the second hand. I put it on a black Colareb strap. And the back lite lume! It is really intriguing when you have to reset the ‘stop at the top’. Also thank God it doesn’t have a date complication so it acts more like a dress or dressy watch. Jody do find more watches without a date, yet analogue. Ask Mondaine if they will swap for a stop-to-go?

Good work, as usual. My two-cents? if you're into Mondaine (I am) then definitely avoid the date and/or day displays, and the black dial. Stop2Go is where it's at :-)
