Well done! I loved your analysis of this masterpiece. I visited Rome a few years ago and stayed at a hotel just steps away from this church. This spectacular work of art is in a church not extremely popular with tourists so I had the opportunity to gaze at Bernini's sculpture up close. Your description of the entire chapel and the thought process of the artist is much appreciated. Thank you!

He was a real genius

I have always considered this one of the most important sculptures ever created. The golden rays are abstract and I know of no other sculpture up until that time that includes abstact elements. Also I find the fabric of St Teresa's robes mimic her ecstasy. The fabric falls in a big orgasmic heap of random folds. The random folds create a genius contrast against the entire chapel with it's precise use of symmetry.

This is the first time I've ever seen this entire work. I was shocked by the beauty and the labor that must have gone into it. When you explained the "audience" I almost had an ecstatic moment myself ! Bernini was a genius . Up to now, my entire life, I had only seen the usual detail of the face and shoulder of Teresa. It's on the cover of a book titled Mysticism , by Evelyn Underhill, which was originally published in 1911, but I first saw it in 1967 , a friend of mine had it. I just got a copy of it myself, a fine volume on the subject. The allegory of a union between a "lover" and the "Beloved" has been used often to describe the mystical union .. So the fact that the Saint's face can be compared to an erotic experience is in keeping with the allegory . The allegory is also used by John of the Cross in his poem, Dark Night of the Soul. Thank you for bringing this amazing work to my attention as well as Bernini ; I didn't know of him till now. Your analysis was very sharp . I'm subscribing .

One of my favorite sculpture groups in all of Rome. Living there for years I was a regular at this chapel and have overheard many times that the marble group of the saint and angel are one piece of marble. Can you tell me if this is true as it would make the group even more remarkable. Your explanations using light to highlight an area you are speaking of are eccellente!

Do you mean the materials used? The two central sculptural figures are made of marble, the decorations are mostly made with plaster
